Thankfully any of the shops I have ordered from have noticed that my email address says pywoodbury, but I totally forget to sign Pam Woodbury and have just signed them Pam. Guess I'll be more careful to tell them who I am next time. Lisha usually when shows ask how I did I don't put in a $ amount. I will say I did well or okay or not that good depending on what is the truth, but I always figure it is none of their business to know exactly what I did. I do have a problem with shows always raising their prices because we don't dare raise our prices every year to offset their rate increase. With the price of gas this year and most of my shows are at least 50 miles away and I either drive a full size Chevy van to shows or a motor home that is another rate increase that I cannot pass on. It seems like the shows I do don't raise the rates $50 at one crack but just $10-$20 a year after a few years really makes me have to stop and think with all my expenses can I afford this show. Now I am debating with myself as to whether to do a show I had planned on doing this year. For whatever reason they have decided that motor homes or campers cannot stay overnight in the parking lot at the show. Now why not is beyond me so I have to drive (more gas) to a campground and pay more $$ to camp when I have no intentions of actually being a camper just sleeping the night and drive back to the show. Joanne when swaps were first started many years ago it was to make a new basket friend. At the conventions the idea was that you swapped and then you got to know that person and you had a new basket friend. They tried this for a couple of years and actually it was how I got to know Diane Langston cause the very first swap I ever did she was my swap partner. We were both into Americana baskets that year and I still love the basket I got from her. After a couple years of swapping you went and got the swap basket and never actually met your swap partner. I decided I really didn't need somebody else's basket and especially somebody I never even got to meet so I quit swapping. It seems to me on WW the same idea if you swapped would be to make a new basket friend. I know if I swapped the minute I received the basket I would be rushing to the computer to tell the person I got it and thank you even if I didn't like the basket because I still think the idea of swapping still should be to make a new basket friend. I can't see the point of swapping if you don't even care enough to send a thank you. AND Joanne please tell Lois we miss her and 999% of us enjoy her posts and miss them. Four (?) issues ago, I sent in a photo of a basket I had adopted in need of repair. I asked for you knowledgeable basket folks to please look at the picture and tell me what you could about the type of basket. I have received one response from Kay (thanks!) about the type of weaving it might be. Any other ideas?? I know you are all busy people. But if you have a moment, please look at it, as I would like to tell the original owner more about it. I am interested in the weaving style, materials, worth, etc... As stated before, the basket was purchased in Portugal in the mid 1960's, for around $15. Other than the broken handle, which I have repaired, and some fading, it is in excellent condition. Thanks to all who can help! Sincerely, Leigh Ingram Laurinburg NC %%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%% Subject: subcribe and link me please Date: Sun, 20 Feb 2000 18:06:57 -0500 From: "The Basket Maker" To: Hi David, I have enjoyed your site on many occasions and many of my customers do also. I have read in many books how the Papago (Tahono O'odaham) use them in baskets - somehow, the black surface is stripped from the claw & used as a binder over the core material...but it is said that it is a challenge to strip, and many traditional weavers will pay someone else to do it. I have never found any reference to HOW they are stripped. The "wild" devils' claw is pretty short, but I have been told they cultivate very long ones now, which are sold in "hats" at peak season near Tucson. Hope this helps, I think I missed some of the devil's claw question. This is my second swap and I have had the privilege of receiving swap baskets from her both times. Jeanette has said the chances of that happening is 1 in 10,000. I guest I'm the lucky one huh!!! It's a beautiful basket made up of plain and brown reed with some new techniques I haven't done before. That alone was a plus to received because I'm a real hands on person. When I see it I'll be able to learn the technique. What I like most about these basket swaps are not only the baskets but the culture that you learn about from different parts of our great nation. Jeanette has included a "King Cake," Jambalaya Mix and a basket full of Mardi Gras beads (necklaces) from last years parade. And included a beautiful letter explaining about the King Cake. Jeanette, I have 5 kids ranging from 14 - 3 and the beads were a big hit here. Thank you for blessing us and taking time out of your busy schedule to join the swap. I was truly bless. Adams" To: davidc@iei.net I was not a participant in this past basket swap because I joined WW's after the swap had begun and because I simply did not have enough information or understanding of the rules. However, I have a number of comments (as a potential future participant), concerning the recipient's response or lack of response after the arrival of a basket from a swap partner. Publicly and inappropriately embarrassing a swap partner by posting a derogatory message to the entire WW's list, without knowing the circumstances for their breach in etiquette is ill mannered in itself. If one is upset over a swap partner's lack of acknowledgment, perhaps one should exercise concern by contacting the partner "privately." Then, perhaps we should also ask ourselves if the expectation of a flowery acknowledgment is purely egotistically driven? Are we all working toward the same specific goal or mission here? Perhaps we should occasionally be reminded that lives, families and income precede our addiction to basketry? Perchance, a swap partner has been dealing with a temporary family emergency, catastrophic illness, lack of funds, or a hidden literacy or literary handicap. Also, mail can and is often misdirected by the postal service. A partner's response concerning the receipt of a basket may have succumbed to this misdirection. On the other hand, an unresponsive partner may be sending a subtle message by merely following the teachings of the adage, "If you don't have anything kind to say, then you shouldn't." In this case, no news is good news since no one wants to hear that their "gift" wasn't held in high esteem. A lack of response could also mean that a partner is new to WW's swaps and isn't aware that a personal note, as well as a notice to the coordinator, are requirements. It may be apropos to remember that some people require more specific direction than others for educational or cultural reasons, since we are part of a more diverse multi-cultural society these days. Please remember that unkind, public castigation for a breach in etiquette will only serve to discourage any other future swap participants! It also hinders the free exchange of positive community fellowship. So let us not set a precedence of publicly embarrassing people who don't live up to our own specific or perceived values, until we have essentially "walked in their shoes." A hand outstretched in friendship and understanding will benefit all parties. One only has to take the first step. There is a quotation that comes to mind here that ends with these words, "...the first to forgive wins the laurel." In closing, I would like to offer a suggestion to all future basket swap coordinators and participants. Establish, publish and follow a guideline, which "explicitly" specifies what is expected of each participant, and describes in detail the nature or goal of the basket swap. This will also help make each coordinator's job run smoothly. The use of a generalized, anonymous evaluation form at the end of a swap could also foretell and eventually eliminate future problems such as this. As a WW's subscriber and 4th generation basketmaker, I am most willing to offer my volunteer services in arranging and establishing said guidelines and evaluations, as well as helping to coordinate any future swaps. In fact, I'll go one step further and also make this offer: Anyone who would like to send me their positive and constructive suggestions for a list of said guidelines and evaluation questions may do so. I will be happy to compile all responses and post a summary of what I receive, with David's permission, on a future WW's. E-mail me privately at the address below. I appreciate you taking the time to answer my question. Bernie - I think I agree with you about copying a basket that you have purchased and then selling them. Another practice that I question is teaching someone else's pattern without their permission. Tony - I wish I lived closer to St Louis. I would love to take one of your classes. And a class with Martha Wetherbee would be to die for. I am sure you wont have any trouble filling your or her classes. Joanne - I am sorry that your swap partner lacks the courtesy of even a simple thank you. Even if she did not like the basket, she could have at least let you know that she received it. I hope this wont discourage you from participating in any future swaps. Gretchen - A new baby, what could be more wonderful? And she is coming from so far away. She must be very special. I pray that you have a safe journey and are soon back home with your little miracle. I wanted to thank Lisha K for her bit of insight into the inner workings of craft fair promoters. I'm starting to research getting into some local craft fairs this year, so her tip regarding disclosing sales figures was timely. I will be sure to keep this information guarded. Up until January I rented a space in a craft store, paid a monthly rental fee, and they sent me a check for my sales. Well, the store suddenly closed without any warning! I have not received my sales checks for both December and January, though, luckily, my lease was up at the end of January so I was able to get my stock out before they closed. (Of course December was the busiest time of the year.) I've been trying to contact a detective from the police dept, who I was told is "handling the case." Why the police are involved is anyone's guess at this point! Has anyone out there had anything similar happen to them? If so, what was the final outcome? I've learned my lesson, that's why I'm considering craft shows, I'll have control of the money and won't have to worry about not getting paid for my sales. So that leads me to my next question. For those of you who do shows, what types of displays do you use? I don't want anything real heavy because I'd be setting up and taking down all by myself. I'm trying to stay away from card tables because I'd be losing all the space under the table, and I wouldn't need a place to store my packing boxes because I usually use huge garbage bags to transport my baskets. They don't take up too much space when they are empty! Any suggestions, thoughts? Does anyone know of patterns for creating take-apart wood shelving? Gretchen - best of luck with your adoption! I'm sure it seemed like this day would never come! I don't think Suzanne Moore has a web site, at least not that I could find. I don't have their 800 number here at work, so I'm sure someone else will beat me to it. Tony - I'm looking forward to receiving the information about the classes you are hosting with Martha Wetherbee. Thanks to everyone for offering support, and sharing your thoughts, ideas, and suggestions. And thanks to David for all your work keeping us together! Dianne Gleixner, in SE Wisconsin where we are expecting a "January thaw" this week, maybe up to 50 degrees! Inside I found not one but "TWO" little Looped Sampler Pouch/Baskets!! I've never seen any before and was delighted w/them! One little basket followed a Valentine Day color scheme, starting w/pink wire on bottom, working up to several layers of different pinks/reds to the top, rounded out w/ beads! A second similar style was in black and grey's, also w/ beads! I've spent much time turning them over and over trying to figure out where and how she started and ended these little gems!
