Date: Wed, 9 Feb 2000 20:58:34 -0600 From: lin karrels To: "'davidc@iei.net'" Today I received my swap from my partner, Eve Fulton, from Frederick MD. I remember Eve's postings before the swap, being very hesitant about joining, and I am so glad she decided to give it a try. I received not one, but TWO baskets from Eve, one a very colorful vinegar/oil with mauve and blue weavers for a patriotic theme, and the second basket is round with a wood base, flat oval weavers and green twining. Eve stenciled a pineapple and the words "Welcome" on to the wooden base. There are two wire handles brought together with a spool in the center and tied with a country plaid bow. It is absolutely beyond me how this happens, but pineapples happen to be a theme in my home (my maiden name was Dole)! Each basket also had a wooden tag with the name of the basket, Eve's name and the year. Eve, you did a wonderful job and I am very happy you decided to join this swap. Thank you! OKAY, so when's the next one..... swap that is! After too long of living under to loud skies of UPS's hub in Louisville I said "enough is enough" (and words I won't use in a roomful of Ladies) and have relocated just a little south of Augusta outside a small town called Blythe It may said to be in the back of beyond, but with such a lovely name, what weaver could resist? A bonus on the lovely 2 acres I've found, is a 1,624 sq foot modular, with a big 10 x 20 ft. workshop and 9 huge Pecan trees - imagine, nuts to eat and dye with as well. Of course, as I sit here waiting to move in, dreams of this years' veggie garden, complete with fresh corn, compete with all the baskets I plan to weave with Pecan dyed reed. So gals (and guys) a whole new wonderful life is starting for me and I so wanted to share my happiness with those who are happy in weaving like me. So now just call me Blythe Ten Thumbs (Barbara) %%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%% Subject: Re: "Weavers Words" V. 3 I. 101 Date: Wed, 9 Feb 2000 23:17:20 -0500 From: "Donna L" To: "David Collins" Joanne - Re: Bootleg patterns - I'm well aware of it but at a loss as to how to stop it. Even though we have signs in the store, and it is posted in our on-line catalog that it is illegal to photocopy ANY pattern or book in whole or in part purchased from us, teachers are still doing it. They refuse to purchase a pattern for each student, even though we offer a discount to them if they do. They can add the cost of the pattern to the class fees, actually making a little for themselves. It's so obvious, as someone will call and ask a question about the pattern (our shop name is stamped on them) and say there is no color photo and they can't make out the photocopy. LIGHT BULB - we know immediately they do not have an original and we nicely tell them that their pattern was illegally photocopied. We very nicely tell them since they did not purchase the pattern from us, we really can't help them. We can, however, sell them an original copy complete with the color print. Yes, I know - same old topic we've been over so many times before. Maybe that's why my sweetgrass has never done well. I brought some home from MI many years ago with the promise that it was very hardy and I wouldn't have any trouble with it. Well, to this day, I can only say it just "exists" - that's it. I had visions of being able to harvest it but it's barely there in the garden. So if it is decided we don't put anything in, that is fine. If we do, maybe even note a max pricing of whatever we include inside? Higgins" To: davidc@iei.net I had to let everyone know that I returned home very late last night and found a big box just waiting for me to tear into. Needless to say, I did, and was so thrilled. Ingrid Quick of Goldsboro, North Carolina sent me a beautiful Flo Hoppe design "Mesa Basket". Ingrid incorporated methods into her weaving that I have never tried, but now want to. It is 3 rod whaling from a double woven base, incorporating a deep green weaver among the natural. It is stained a beautiful color, which I was going to describe as being an olive-brown, but every time I pick it up to look at it, I think it is another color. The spokes are round reed and she has incorporated a mid-section that is 3 dimensional with 2 rows of round reed that are on the outside diameter of the basket, then 2 rows inset about 1/2" toward the center of the basket, then 2 more rows toward the outside diameter. How is that for a confusing description!! She has also used what I assume is waxed linen as part of the lashing on the rim. I have yet to use waxed linen, so I am particularly thrilled with having this basket to refer to when I make my first attempts using waxed linen. Just to make everything extra special, Ingrid included another treat - a beautiful deep rose woven heart. It is about 12" wide and about 9" tall. I have never seen a heart woven like this - it looks fantastic! Ingrid told me that she took a basic basket making class in 1990 and didn't weave again until last year. That is so hard to believe - her work and beautiful finished project show that she is a very accomplished and talented weaver. Thank you very much, Ingrid. Your basket and woven heart will hold a cherished place in my heart and home for years to come. I'm not in my shop by my library of reference books. http://www.johnmcguire.com/Anyway, Cass is a wealth of knowledge and explains things very well. I have gone out and taken off quite a bit of birch bark from downed trees this late fall and early winter. There was a big storm through here a few years ago and knocked lots of them down, but didn't kill them. Some bark I did take from dead trees and it seems just fine. The bark comes off fairly easy and then I bring it home and stack the big pieces on a table or large boards and place heavy things on top of them, so that they dry flat. If you intend on doing much gathering, it would be best to make up some kind of a press. Cass shows how to do that in the book, too. Be sure to check for bugs first, you don't want critters in your house. Then when you want to use the piece, the bark and about three layers can be peeled and cut into strips by hand, or you can use a stripper for uniform strips. I purchased my wonderful stripper from John McGuire http://www.johnmcguire.com/ and really like it. While your copies may only feature quality photos, many of our pattern suppliers send us patterns not with photos, but with quality color scanned photos. This may look like a Xerox, and I wouldn't want our customers to believe that we were dealing in bootleg copies. There is a standard practice among some writers to send a shop one copy with a photo, allow the shop to scan color copies, and simply charge for how many scans are made. Then we sell the scanned copies. It is much easier to keep a pattern in stock with this method, and saves both parties on shipping. I realize that there are many bootleg patterns out there. But I feel I must stress that it isn't always valid to judge the authenticity by whether or not the pattern has a photo. I wish there was an easier way to tell bootleg copies. Good luck in discovering who is taking your patterns. Does the woman who called you remember what site she got it from? A question about craft fairs. I do military fairs because that is where baskets sell. Oahu has many fairs all year long, but mostly the items sold are local things and a lot of imports.."country" just doesn*t sell all that great at these fairs. (Nor would Nantucket's, antler baskets, pine needle baskets, etc.). Yesterday I rec*d the application for the Schofield fair that I do twice a year (and it is a good fair) and I was taken back by the application. Included are a letter of info, a page of "rules", the application itself, and 8 pages called "Army regulation 210-7 (and this reg is 21 years old)" Commercial Solicitation on Army Installations. The print is very fine and it goes into a lot of weird stuff that is difficult to understand, "forbidden" practices such as wearing a name tag with your company name listed--but the worst part are the last two pages called "Business Permit Application and Local Agency Check". Those wishing to do the fair have to fill out a "description "including, height, weight, place of birth, and so on as it appears applicants will have a background check done on them. In fact, on the back of the last page is a big space for "Findings of local agency check". I have never heard of a craft fair doing a background check on crafters. Yes, I know this is the Army, but this post is an "open" post--no guards on the gate. Anyone can just drive on whenever...and I understand there is a new commander pushing this. So, if you do craft fairs, have you ever done one that requires a background check on crafters? Oh, I also have to send the completed application, a copy of my GE Tax license and a picture of myself. An application for another fair (at a school) on same day on a different military installation came today and though it isn*t as big, I*m thinking seriously about signing up for that one instead. No, I don*t have anything to hide--I just think this is kind of dumb for a daylong craft air. I think this fair will die as most of the people who do it don*t have age Tax license--I doubt few basket weavers who sell on this island have one. Off to class-- Aloha nui loa, Lois %%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%% Subject: Re: "Weavers Words" V. 3 I. 100 Date: Thu, 10 Feb 2000 23:41:48 -0600 From: "dance!" (It was my birthday.) Barbara's beautiful basket emerged from the careful packaging. The heavy part was 3 packages of muffin mix she had included to complement the fine Round Bun Basket, which contained them. It seem we just have to put something in baskets. I took the muffin mix out and began to fill the basket with the my hairpins as I was pulling them out. Baskets are here to serve. Round Bun Basket -- as done by Barbara (did she choose the name for the alliteration?) is double bottomed. As she began to shape the sides with fine, evenly packed, flat oval reed, she shaped them outwardly -- then curved the sides in again as she approached the rim. Any one else would see this is a special basket. I appreciate that there is not a 'lop' side to it; it is simply symmetrical. The curve is accentuated by a carefully (and evenly) wrapped Xs in flat oval reed around the perimeter. A final gracious touch is an understated braid of leather -- laying under the rim -- ending with simple beads. Barbara states that this is "a design of ULIPIA of North Carolina". I will need to get back on the web to learn more about this. From the mountains of east Tennessee to the mountains of northern New Mexico, this basket already has a history. The muffins will go into my stomach, but not into the bun basket. It is too nice to risk with food. I intend to set it atop my great-grandmother's pie safe. This basket is heirloom. Thank you, Barbara And thank you, Deloros, for a well run swap. Diane %%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%% Subject: Swap basket received. Catalogs get lost in the mail all the time - it may not be the company's fault. I had to send 3 catalogs to FL one time until the person got one of them. Make sure that the address you give is the correct one for postal delivery. We get e-mails requesting catalogs with zip codes missing or no name or incomplete or misspelled addresses. Please give a company the benefit of the doubt, new customers are important to all companies. Once a catalog leaves our office, we have no control or knowledge over what happens to it. It seems strange for the past two days my inbox has only had 8 to 14 emails in it. Much more manageable. I working on a couple of final messages, but basically feel like I've got things in shape. So, if anyone has anymore questions with the swap let me know. I catching up reading the WW's I read the story about the cows and Kool-Aid. It brought to mind another such story. 3 or 4 years ago, while doing the Stowe Basketry Festival, I stopped at Ben and Jerry's. Yes, that's Ben and Jerry's ice cream factory. They're located about 20 minutes from the Round Hearth. I did their tour of the factory. It seems they have an ice cream inspector. (I don't think I want that job. I'm as big as a house now. With that job I'd be as big as the state of Texas.) The inspector has to cut a container of ice cream into several pieces to see there's no air pockets and that all the chunks are even throughout the container. Then she had to taste each container to make sure its good. Any ice creams that do not pass inspection is junkied. When they are changing flavors the machines are emptied and the excess is again junkie. Well are that junkied ice cream goes to the pig farmers of Vermont to be fed to the pigs. Now to my sister's shock, her favorite is the pigs favorite which is Cherry Garcia. The pigs least favorite is anything that has mint in it. When we asked how they came up with the fact that the pigs like the Cherry Garcia the best. The answer was that the pigs just wollow and roll in it and get it all over themselves. So now all of us Cherry Garcia fans can remember that we share our favor with the pigs. Well, except for the fact that I have gotten my fact basket, that's about it for now. I'm not going into detail about my swap basket today because I want my Thank You letter to get to Marge Smoot first. She says mail is traveling by dog sled right now.
