It came all the way from Monterey Ca. from Shirley Albright! I had a pretty cold bad day I must admit. I forgot to take my asthma medicine in the morning and by the afternoon wasn't feeling so hot. Then decided to push it by doing a do it yourself car wash since my car was so filthy it was all grey and not green anymore. If you've ever done one of those, you know they go by timers so one has to hurry. So there I am with the baby granddaughter in the van, trying to use this foaming brush and hurry and it's cold and windy and the brush is heavy. I get half the van soapy and decide I can't breathe so good. Go in for the rescue inhaler which of course is jammed and/ or empty. Sheesh... Finished the van doing deep breathing exercises and trying to ignore symptoms. Thank God I made it through, came home and did my medicines and recovered nicely. But still was an eye opener to be more careful. Anyway, I come home to find this package and opened it up. Wow! Inside were 2 baskets! One was what she calls a squashed cathead basket. I've never seen one like this. Low and wide with little feet. Adorable!!! A neat double rim with a matchstick border inside and a regular flat rim outside. The other is a garlic basket, very lacey and open with a solid bottom and a ring type handle. Inside she tucked a garlic clove (a nearby town is the garlic capital of the world), and a bag of dried apricots (grown just east of her) and chocolate liqueurs just for those bad days!!!! She also included a neat bio of herself and the area she comes from. Such a wonderful package to come home to on a windy cold day. What I'd like to know is how you knew Shirley that I'd been eyeing the apricots at the store but avoided buying them cause I knew they were just too pricey right now. Shirley didn't include her email addy so I had to reply here (not that I wouldn't have anyway) but I want her to know how greatly her efforts were appreciated. Excellent work Shirley!!!! Take care all, Judy from dark and cold eastern Pa. %%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%% Subject: Re: "Weavers Words" V. 3 I. 100 Date: Tue, 8 Feb 2000 22:18:04 EST From: AngelBskts@aol.com To: davidc@iei.net Cathryn thanks for clearing up the Silver Dollar City thing - I was wondering if they were running behind like last year but sounds like they are on schedule! In fact, I have contacted all the Department of Natural Resources or the Fish and Wildlife of about 10 states that I teach in. I requested and received the exact law off the record books, either through the Internet, phone conversation (with follow up letters) or have a signed letterhead from the department chiefs directly. I am not selling my antler baskets over the Internet and rarely make commission sales out of state, so the sales of the baskets have not been a problem for me so far. What do you do regarding the out of state or for that matter, in state sales of your antler baskets? I noticed on your website that a great deal of them have sold. In the state of Minnesota, it's perfectly legal to have, possess, sell and barter antlers of all types. They are sold at antique shops, rendezvous, flea markets, as silverware handles, cribbage boards, chandeliers, tables, baskets, chairs, you name it, antlers are sold in any and all manners. Have you asked Jill Choate, Carol Antrim, or Judy Briscoe how they handle teaching and selling antler baskets through galleries, workshops and classes? Now, one of the things I noticed in buying from wholesalers, is that they have a small disclaimer that says something like this, paraphrased 'The consumer is responsible to determine if buying and owning these antlers is legal in their state of residence.' Just to protect yourself, I would suggest you do the research and carry the letters and laws with you or at least have them for easy reference should the need arise. BTW, your baskets are wonderful! After much agonizing as to whether I should participate in the Basket Exchange, and much convincing by my weaving friend, I sent my name on the last day. Together we picked out the pattern and spent the good part of a weekend weaving our baskets together. My basket was to go to my "home state," Wisconsin, to Judith Street in Green Lake. I carefully wrapped my basket and sent it off to Wisconsin. In just a few days I received and gracious thank you note from Judith. Saturday morning my husband carried in a box from the mail. He said, "She must not have liked the basket you sent cause she sent it back! Even used your mailing label and the Sears box you wrapped it in." (The brown paper had torn in the corner.) He didn't know who I'd sent my basket to, and just assumed she sent my basket right back! Turns out Judith's daughter, Stephanie Osheim had my name, and used the same box, my return address and packing material to send her basket to me! She had us all fooled until I got through my "packing material." What a beautiful surprise that was. And I love it. When I see baskets like the one she made for me, I know I have a long way to go. She is truly an artist. This basket is really beautiful and I do appreciate it so much. She split the reed into V's on the bottom, used wooden beads and curls as well as great woven handle, I have a lot to learn! Can't wait for the next exchange! Or you could replace them with colored ribbons. I haven't heard of dying reed white, but you could bleach it, though I think paint would look better. Cathryn: I filled out a form asking for bulletins on sales tax from our dept. of revenue. A number of them were more than one page long and the person filling the order omitted most of the second pages. Hm-m-m-m....... My "business" is large enough for sales tax to be a consideration, but not large enough yet to hire a tax consultant. It seems, from the accounting book I have, that a whole lot of expenses are deductible and it sums up the figures very well. One just has to put the figures in the right spaces, do the sums and fill out a couple of forms for filing with the gubmint. Ye-e-ech. As I said, I hate the whole process. . It was a very cute country tote basket. I love it. It is so nice to get a basket from someone other than myself ;-) Thanks Again!! Some of you might already do this but I will say it anyways. Sometimes I like to weave in ceramic or clay things into the basket, or just tie-ons. Well, we all know how pricey those things can be, so I always make my own. If you own any rubberstamps, you can make your own too. Just get some paperclay or sculpey clay, roll it out, not too thin, take your rubberstamp and stamp into the clay, with no ink, cut around the image and for the weave in kind, just cut 2 slits, big enough for the reed or whatever to fit through it, then bake it in the oven. When it is done, you can paint it however you like, with acrylics. Then I add a rub on gel stain, like antiquing stain, then wipe it off, then when it is dry, spray a clear coat on it. They look so nice. For the tie on kind, before you bake, just add a little hole to it. You can do a bunch in no time at all! Thanks for all of you that responded to my basket class for kids plea! I have decided to do a "simple" square basket, with no handle, I will call it a candy basket or something. I think I will make some little tie-ons (mentioned above) for them to tie on. I think that if there is no handle, it needs something else. I don't know about you all, but I can't wait until spring.................. This was the first swap that I didn't participate and reading about all the great baskets being received makes me feel left out... I won't miss the next one, though. Carolyn of MI: About your white wedding basket... I have just finished a Flower Girl Basket for a friend's wedding in March. It was a small 5" cathead basket with a fix handle made from a piece of half round material. I had woven the basket with a twill pattern. I diluted, slightly, some white paint and painted the whole basket. I added overlay color pieces (black and purple) over the "twilled row". For your basket, maybe you could try a wider band at the bottom and top, paint the whole basket white, then add some curls for your color... The next basket that I would make this way, I would add some fabric extender or clear glaze to the paint to reduce the initial crunch after the paint dries. A 5" plastic pot liner, from the garden center, fit just nicely inside my basket for the fresh flower. Hope this helps ;^) GrayFelix@cs.com: Your question about re-using dye... I reuse dye all the time... I just keep adding more water and just a bit of dye to bring the color back up to full strength. Sometimes, especially with the blue, I like to use the spent dye bath to make a more country color blue... I wish my frig was big enough to hold all my dye bottles, but I keep them in the garage in big plastic trays (secondary containments) just in case a bottle breaks. I haven't yet had a bottle break, but now that I have jinks myself, the other container is there... Well, I have been weaving small heart baskets, with roses on the side for Valentine's Day... I have to put rims on five more by tomorrow and work just gets in the way of weaving ;^) I don't have the pattern name and the author with me, but the basket is cute in the picture, and much better in person. I filled it with V-day tissue paper, some Hershey's Kisses, and Heart Jellied Candies. Put this all in a V-Day cellophane bag and it made a nice fast gift basket. The guys snatched this one up quick! If I thought that these were going to be this popular I would have made up more... oh, well, time to gear up for Easter... It is slightly opaque; water based and can be brushed or sprayed onto the reed (after the basket is finished). We have it on closeout special of $3.50 for a 16oz bottle. Cindy in AL - you might want to try John McGuire's book "Basketry - The Nantucket Tradition", it's a beautiful book with many clear, color photographs. GrayFelix@cs.com - dye can be stored in heavy-duty plastic containers in a cool place (basement, ground celler, etc.). It can be reused until the color is gone. When reusing, strain to remove any chunks, bring dye to a boil (will kill anything that may be lurking within and reactivate the color), use a test strip (here's where all those scraps of reed come in) to see if the color will be OK. If color is gone, dispose of. If you like it, dye away. However, I do feel like the world worst coordinator. I ready did not realize how much was involved in handling this job. It's mostly time. I have to devote a lot of time to my training at school. It turns out that there's a deadline that I have to meet with this training and the testing that I didn't know about. You have to get your first three core tests done by June to complete your MCSE or you'll have to start all over again because of Windows and Office going to 2000. Then Mom took a flop on the ice and injured her back. That took up a week of my life looking after her. When leaving for work this morning she had to nerve to ask if she could go off with the car today visiting. I guess you all can all guess what my answer was. I spent most of today and all of yesterday trying to catch up. I had over 300 pieces of email to read and answer. (Not all on swap stuff, some was work) Now, if some of you receive your basket late it's probably my fault. I have about 4 people here that tell me the didn't get a partner. I'm tracking them down to get them out. And get this all finished off. Also, there were some emails from people whom I confused because I had extended the mailing date to Feb 7. I'm sorry for all the confusion and I apologize to all of you. I'll be sending a second email tomorrow to David to try and finish this all off. But from what I have completed today. Sharon Svec - have you received you basket, your partner is concerned it might have gotten lost. Pam Mullis, Sherry Mcclure - I'm still working on getting to your two. Lynne McCutcheon - I re-emailed today let me know if you got it. Mary Mautz did you get your swap partners information or do you still need it? If there is anyone else out there that has not heard from me by the end of February 10th please contact me so I can get this all straighten out. Type in the subject BASKET SWAP ISSUES in caps so it's easier to pick out in all my emails. Currently, I've gotten my into box down from 339 to 8 emails. Thank goodness. This is one of the emails that I received and thought I'd throw it out here in ww's for everyone's thoughts and comments. Now, keep in mind, we can all Thank God that my term is up as swap coordinator. The reason for that comment is please send your thought to David. As I have said before I'm not keep up with ww's at this time because of school. If you post your comments to David the future coordinator's will then have your thoughts to canister. Guess that old adage of what comes around, goes around must be true! I am late in sending my swap basket out, but I also have not received mine yet either. Unless it was mailed exactly on the 1st and I just haven't received it yet. Sorry, but I got really sick, and was having lots of trouble deciding what to weave and what to fill the basket with. I kept thinking of nice baskets to weave that wouldn't be good for filling. So, personally, I think the next swap rules should include that the basket arrive with NOTHING else in it. I love the idea of a basket with goodies but the point was to exchange baskets, not additional goodies. I am not trying to be a spoilsport, but this whole thing slowed me down and if all I had to do was to figure out a nice basket, weave and mail, I would have been done weeks ago. And yes, I know I didn't need to fill it, but honestly, it feels like it would be unfair to send out an empty basket when everyone else is describing all their newfound goodies publicly on WW. Okay, sorry, didn't mean to rant on here, just explaining my position and half the reason why my basket is late. My goal is to get it out in the mail tomorrow afternoon, or sat am. Hope that's okay. Now, I have to admit I usually get the basket done in time. I get screwed up with the embellishments and the stuff I'm going to include in the box. But I enjoy including the little goodies too. I will admit that one person send me a list of things that they would like for goodies included. I'd didn't think it was appropriate so I didn't forward that information on. That person may not be happy to find that out, but I did have to draw the line somewhere. I thought that some people like a suggestions to hear what the people would like to receive. It helps some people to figure out what to weave. Personally, I weave with what my mind comes up with. I'm in the pine needle swap. I have changed my mind on what I'm going to do 3 times already. I came up with a really great one but the basket itself has taken on a character of its own that I'm not sure I appreciate. So, I was trying to come up with something else. I stopping a Woodmakers Supply to pick up some scratch stain for my chair at work and went nuts. I now have my new project in the works for the pineneedle swap. I will conform to what future coordinators decide. This was the first basket swap that I have been in. I received a beautiful pine needle coiled basket made by Kathi Klopfenstein from California. It was done with blue waxed linen and some unique beads. Blue is my favorite color. It was nice to also receive the hand lotion and jelly. It's warming up to 35' and there is a forecast of snow for the weekend. Hope to do some cross-country skiing down to the lake. Jayna has been at Harrington Memorial Hospital in Southbridge MA since Thursday. She asked me to check her E-mail and to inform her friends. She was experiencing severe pain in her leg and was having difficulty walking. She also broke out with a terrible rash. They ran some tests and found her sugar level to be extremely high, 636. Jayna is not a known diabetic so of course they admitted her to run further tests. Since Thursday the pain in her leg has continued so they will continue to test to try and find the cause. She asked me to give everyone her hospital phone number so if you wanted to contact her you would be able to. You can reach her directly at: 508-765-3012. Thanks, Dennis I've added her address for those that wish to send a card. Jayna L. Glemby P.O. Box 633 100 Masonic Hill Rd. What a blast. My classes were all as great as I had hoped they would be and I met some really terrific people. I'm really impressed with us. Not only did we attract top quality teachers but we also attracted top quality conventioneers. I have an odd question (big surprise) for some of you out there. I bought some Michigan Sweet Grass and, when I took it to the store, Willow (my cat) went crazy for it. She didn't get goofy like with catnip but she just kept burying her face in it. Has anyone else seen anything like that with cats & sweet grass. Also, does anyone know the Botanical name for it? I can't seem to find "sweetgrass" in my books. Thanks a bunch.
