They didn't have it, and couldn't (or wouldn't) order it. I checked the Internet, and couldn't find anything either, but one site did have an email "ask your question" option. I did, and they wrote back (ironically, the lady's name is Joanne!). The site below shows a picture of the front of the leaflet/book, and the other site is their (1-2-3 Stitch) order form. It is #95-711, and costs $3.15. It looks like a LOT of cross-stitching, but I love those big projects! http://hoffmandis.com/graphics/med/95-711.jpg http://www.123stitch.com/order_form.html Here is other info: 1-2-3 Stitch! How about it Norma, Dollie, and Pat S.? That would be worth making a special trip for. And David we know you can do it if you went to the Colts just to see yourself on TV Yah Da Dah, Yah Da Dah. Pat, I am glad you are commcomingBasket Bash 2000, I got the book this week and have almost decided which baskets to shoot for. And just to know I can really pick on Pat, will be my pleasure. Who else is commcoming the party? It will be great and lots of fun . Does anyone on Weavers Words know how to make rawhide? I have had someone offer goatskin, from a butcher on Wednesday of this week, I hope to make rawhide from it. It might be possible if I only knew how to do it. I send you all love. Have some fun go weave a basket. Or you could help me do rawhide. Our temp. is suppose to be around 0-F tonight, here in Michigan YUCK, YUCK I am waiting for spring. Or the trip to a warm place. It is a delightfully shaped "Christmas Barrel Basket", which she said is designed by Susan Vogel. However, Kim made it Valentine oriented w/ a punched ash stencil strip that had a burgundy strip behind it to highlight the punched out hearts. Other accents were burgundy weavers and twining. It has a swing handle, 3 feet, and, to beat all of that (if one could) a music box in the bottom that plays "Edelweiss" (I believe). And of course, like so many other swap baskets we hear about, it goes perfectly with my master bedroom and bath decor. I was thrilled to say the least. Thanks again Kim! Tomorrow I'm going into town and will ask about replacing the present baskets with new ones. My husband did the taxes (what a way for a man to prove his love!!! :-) ) and, if the snow would melt off our parking area, all would be right with the world. Happy Valentine's Day to all you lovely people. The money it will cost you can probably be recouped in tax savings - and remember, the consultant fees are a deductible expense on your tax return. The IRS does have a toll free number (and excellent website - I think it's merely http://irs.gov or something really close.) to answer your questions. I must say, after having to deal with them way too many times over the years, they have indeed become much more "user friendly". They may be able to answer your inventory questions for you. Please remember, that each state does have slightly different rules. Ex: PA, labor is a taxable item, although not necessarily so in every state. I want to thank you David for all of the work you do behind this site. I have learned an enormous amount since logging on here. Kudos to Dolores Gatz for coordinating WW #7. As a first time participant, it far exceeded my expectations. I received my marvelous basket from Robbie Sykes in North Carolina. It was a self-designed tool basket - designed specifically for me! (Even went as far as to name it Wayne's Tool Basket.) She designed it to hold the tools I use for making white oak baskets. It was perfect! It currently is in use for the purpose, which it was intended. It doesn't fail to bring a smile every time I see it. Thanks again Robbie! Cass McDonald - Thanks for the posting and kind words about the basket that I sent you. As a relative novice, with a slightly different approach to basketry, you are never quite sure how one will take to your work. I am pleased that basket was a good match. Does anyone know of a guild or association here in the Northeast? If there is, would someone let me know. Willing to travel to Vermont, Maine, Massachusetts, Connecticut if necessary. Would like to network with other folks in the region. Thanks for your help. %%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%% Subject: Basket Book Search Date: Tue, 8 Feb 2000 10:26:16 -0500 From: "Robbie & Skip Sykes" Reply-To: "Robbie & Skip Sykes" <@coastalnet.com> To: "David Collins" Thanks David for your hard work recently in getting out all these Weaver's Words! Whew, they're coming at a frantic pace and I'm running to keep up! All are most welcome and eagerly anticipated. I need some help from you folks who own basket shops. I am looking for a book by Grace Kabel entitled Traditions in Basket Making. I do know that it is out of print, so was wondering if any of you may have a copy lurking about in your shops somewhere. I'm particularly interested in the pattern for the Lug Handled Basket. You can email me directly if you like. Thanks! Now, for the "special" thanks to Wayne Husted. Wayne was my swap partner for whom I wove a basket. Yesterday afternoon, I received a PHONE CALL from him thanking me for his basket!!! That was the most thoughtful thing I think anyone has ever done for me! A big THANK YOU Wayne for being such a caring, considerate person. I hope you enjoy using it for many years to come. Robbie in, finally, sunny and mildly warm, [thankfully NO snow] NC! %%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%% Subject: This and That Date: Tue, 8 Feb 2000 10:18:34 -0600 From: "Anthony Robbins" To: I attended the Basketmakers Gathering 2000 sponsored by the Greater Atlanta Basketmakers Guild this weekend. As it was my first convention, I was apprehensive about what to expect. I shouldn't have been--I had a great time, learned a lot, spent waaaaay too much, and met several WW pals. (A special hello to Sarah from Savanna). The hospitality shown by the guild was great! My husband went with me, and thinks he might like to try a Nantucket. (He struck up a conversation with Mr. White at the convention). There are no classes anywhere around here, but I'm sure the WW group can suggest some books that he would find informative. What would ya'll suggest as the best beginner's book for Nantucket's? I know it's too late to go, but can I still get a booklet for the big NC convention? I'd like to see what is being offered. It seems like the information on membership, convention dates, etc. was in a recent WW, but I can't find it. Maybe next year. I'm jealous of all the wonderful Swap Baskets I'm hearing about. Please send David photos. I couldn't participate this time, but I'm already planning for the next one. I, too, am looking for basketweavers to do subcontract work for me. Payment is on a per-piece basis, and I supply all the reed and patterns. If you're interested (or know someone who is), please have them contact me. Bj :) %%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%% Subject: aloha! Date: Tue, 08 Feb 2000 08:12:43 -1000 From: The Keener Clan To: davidc@iei.net Aloha from sunny Honolulu! A couple of questions (or comments)-- I bought a pattern recently (and remember, we weavers in Hawaii order everything almost.) and was surprised to find it had a scanned picture instead of a glossy print. The scanned picture was of poor quality and the design and color in the basket is difficult to see (even with my bifocals). Not only that, it was a fairly costly pattern. So if some pattern prices are going up, is quality coming down? I would have certainly paid a little more for a better picture. Long before Christmas, I requested a catalog from a basket supplier listed in JUST PATTERNS. I haven*t heard a word. This is the second supplier that hasn*t responded to a request. So I ask--if you don*t want the "hassle" of doing business with the weavers in Hawaii, could you drop us a line and tell us? Bert--I really wish I could have been in your class. It sounded like a good time. I want to take a basket class badly! I*m saving my pennies for a trip to convention next year. If I don*t go then, I might not get the chance for a long time. We*ve decided to apply for a job in Italy in 2 years and if we go, who knows when we*ll come back....and this will pretty much put an end to my weaving business, though I will still weave. My children work at Borders Books and Music and my older daughter gave me an application for a 20% discount on books that deal with my business. If you have a large bookstore near you and your weaving has turned into a business, you might want to check this one out. Hope everyone is doing just fine. Aloha, Lois %%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%% Subject: re-using dye Date: Tue, 8 Feb 2000 15:28:01 EST From: GrayFelix@cs.com To: davidc@iei.net I had just read a humorous quip about basketmaking. One point was dye in the frig. What I'd like to know is can dye be re-used and how long will it stay good in the frig? Thanks for your help. All WW is wonderful. %%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%% Subject: WW swap basket! Date: Tue, 08 Feb 2000 12:37:19 PST From: "sassy katie" To: davidc@iei.net Hi everyone! I received my swap basket from Jan Knapp in Indiana and it is great! She made this lovely large wall basket with a neat wire hanger that is a house with trees on either side. She even made a little hand hewn 'board' sign with our last name that hangs from a little chain! She also included a journal, and a couple of cute patterns that she designed. I immediately knew where to hang the basket - on the wall in my workshop, where it will hold whatever books and notes I'm working from. The journal will stay right by my bed, for those late night sudden attacks of inspiration that I never could remember to write down later! Thanks again, Jan!!! Basketry willow supplier: Ron and Bobbie Harrison, of Willow Dreams Farm in Kentucky, grow willow. http://www.creative-net.net/~rharrison/ They were sweet enough to share some with me about three years ago, from one of their first harvests, and are very nice folks. Bobbie makes lovely beaded jewelry, and Ron makes great willow baskets and bent-willow furniture. Now that I'm so far away (used to live in Ohio), I wish I'd gotten one of his chairs when I could!! Things are getting organized for me here, finally! I have found a really neat historical settlement that is also an art center, and am teaching some classes there! One of my first students owns a small gallery that features mostly native American work, but she loved my ribbed baskets and has taken some, and we are also going to be part of a local festival. Now all I need is enough 'basket ladies' nearby to form a small guild!! Beth made a Millennium basket that she designed in December. She calls it "Fruit Basket with Oak Base." It starts with a lovely oak base, which was made by her husband, John. It is a nice sized round basket and the workmanship is wonderful. She included some special Wisconsin goodies, a basket notepad and a cranberry scented Door County Candle, which are wonderful. The best surprises Beth included in the basket are an extra base and the pattern so I can have the fun of making one myself. Thanks so much, Beth! This was my first Basket Swap and I am already looking forward to the next one. I found this shop when I visited my cabin last year and really enjoy going there when I'm in Wisc. - try it - you'll be glad you did!!! Debbie Czerwionka In the Windy City where we're going to be rainy and snowy for the next three days - great weaving weather if I wasn't working two jobs! %%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%% Subject: Swap Basket arrived!!! Date: Tue, 08 Feb 2000 20:12:23 -0500 From: Kati To: David Collins Wow! Wow! I received my basket yesterday from Chrystal Higgins in Whitefish, Montana and I was completely blown away! It is beautiful! This basket has a square base woven with 1/2 inch spokes with a piece of #2 or #3 variegated round reed on each side of each spoke. Now if that isn't tedious enough, she wove up the sides with the same materials. (Chrystal, you must have the patience of a saint!!) Finally, the rim is woven of pine needles. It is the most unique and beautiful basket I have ever received and I am so thrilled with it. I loved the treats inside too, especially the handmade soap which I took to school for my students to see. I even got a reaction from my autistic child who said "Aaaahhhhhh". Believe me that's a big deal! My daughter is busy pouring over the cookbook, since she is the cook in this house. And the basket notes are mine, mine all mine!! Thank you so much for putting so much thought and work into my swap basket. Anyone who is blessed enough to have you for a partner is really in for a treat. Thank you again!! Denise in Rockingham, NC where we never want to see snow again!
