I still tire out pretty easily, but seems like each day I am a little stronger. I thank everyone for their well wishes. I'm getting ready for my two classes next week. They are both on chair weaving, using the herringbone design. But my big event will be the first weekend in December the 5th and 6th. It's the 6th annual Christmas Down on the Farm at my Mullins Log Cabin. Besides myself, a friend, Ginny Hamilton will be doing basket weaving demonstrations. I also have wool spinning, and quilting. Door prizes are two free overnights at the cabin. Herbal teas, hot chocolate, and cookies will be served as refreshments. If weather permits, there will be horse drawn wagon rides. Lots of baskets, & folk art gifts for sale. So, if you are anywhere near Grant County, Kentucky, come on down for a real good time. I am 50 miles south of Cincinnati, 40 miles north of Lexington, 2hrs. east of Louisville, and 4 hrs. north of Nashville. I have been collecting rainwater, at Kay Haradines suggestion, to soak my cedar and other materials. Like her I have very high iron and mineral well water that discolors and darkens the cedar and cedar root. The rainwater works great, but after working with the cedar my hands must absorb the oils or something, because I wash my hand s or take a shower and they turn black with stains. I have been using lemon juice, straight from the bottle. It works great and is not harsh like some cleansers. I have no idea if it will work on hands dyed or stained. I noticed in last WW Sandy Quackenbush mentioned a snowflake and small reindeer. Does anyone know where these patterns can be ordered. I am trying to make small ornaments for the craft fair on last weekend in Nov. and would like to get these two patterns. I bought a reindeer several years ago but have never figured out an easy way to do it. Have finished the 32 baskets for the Shaker Shop in IL. and now can settle down to making more for the show. So back to weaving. Hope everyone is enjoying lovely fall weather except Lois in Hawaii!! I had a box of latex gloves (the kind the medical profession uses) in the house. I put those on as I dye. The dye stays on the gloves, not my hands. As far as if the dye comes off onto my hands while weaving, I simply take a paper towel and run the piece of reed through it to get as much dye off as possible. If as I weave there is some on my hands, its usually not too much that I just get up and wash it off. When I dye reed I add vinegar to the rinse and haven't had too much of a problem with too much bleeding of the dye. I enjoy every issue of WWd's and have an idea maybe we could think about (or ask David to figure it out!) There are so many great hints and tips...like Jean May and her Polident tablet for cleaning stain on hands...or the use of "Fast Orange" cleaner that Donna mentioned. Now, I don't know about everyone else, but I tend to misplace all these great ideas or I never remember which issue they were in and so on. Could we set up a place on Weaver's Words page that we could send in tips..sort of like the recipes? Hey David, what do you think? There was another neat idea about some sort of quilters liquid stuff that would stop the bleeding of dye colors. Now where was that? So, if we could post them it would be a great resource to be able to check it when you need a quick answer. Just a thought..... Great letter from Martha Stewert! Thanks David! Question: Could I have some feedback regarding what is the right thing to do when teaching a class (like to guild members) Can I use a pattern from a book? Can I make copies of that pattern as handouts? Always giving full credit to the author of course. If I wanted to teach a basket, say from one of the many basket instruction books...would I have to have their permission first? I really would like to know how to handle this. Patty Johnson-Welby: I just know that I saw that the Antler Baskets book was back in print and one of the suppliers has it. I am pretty sure I saw it in a recent catalog, just can't remember where and I have spent an hour looking....sorry. Have you tried writing to Bobbi. We do have a copy of her book in our guild library and I can look up her address at our December meeting if you want. Darleena Jones: Beautiful piece on the Vet. I got tears in my eyes as I read it. Yes, too many are forgotten. Let's remember them this Veterans Day. Bleeding dye colors: I just finished a very challenging basket, using bright red and blue along with natural reed. I had to be sure the dye would not run, so I rinsed and rinsed until absolutely no color was in the sink and then I soaked it for about 15 minutes with a 1/2 cup salt and a cup of white vinegar. Then rinsed again. No bleeding at all and I think it was partly due to the fact that I did not get the reed wet again and I wiped down the length of each piece with an old towel before weaving with it. There was not a bit of bleed through of colors! I was doing an Indian blanket pattern design and the colors needed to be up against the natural to get the effect of the tapestry. It worked! All you lucky weavers that went to the AMB convention! We have a very active guild here in Reno, NV and we are really excited to be able to have Judy Olney come to teach a workshop next week! It's a long way from Massachusetts to Nevada so this is a big thrill for us. She'll teach us on the 19th & 20th and then she flies down to Berkeley, CA to do a one day workshop at the Canning Shop on the 21st. She is a very busy lady and a much sought after instructor so we feel very fortunate to get her! CLR: About your basket that had a flaw or two..can you paint or stain the whole thing and make it look different? How about an embellishment/feathers/beads/raffia? It snowed very hard on my way home from work tonight....I sure do not want to have winter set in this early! Back to the weaving...lots of shows to get ready for and not much time! Thanks David for all your endless work and time in this fantastic format. There is nothing like it anywhere! You are a real gem! Happy Thanksgiving to everyone, from Molly Gardner, in Northern Nevada, where it's starting to snow and the leaves are STILL on the trees....and the apples haven't been picked yet! {*}-{*}{*}-{*}{*}-{*}{*}-{*}{*}-{*}{*}-{*}{*}-{*}{*}-{*}{*}-{*}{*}-{*} Subject: Re: "Weavers Words" V. 2 I. 58 Date: Mon, 09 Nov 1998 01:27:18 EST From: froggestow@juno.com (Roberta R Comstock) To: davidc@iei.net References: 1 "Weavers Words" Vol. 2 Iss. 58 Joe Conroy - Your soapy hand protection sounds interesting. What are some of the things that are looked for in determining the quality of a basket? I have gone to and done several shows lately. I guess I have been surprised with the quality of some of these baskets that are being sold. I must be too hard on "Quality"!
