I am hastening to drop you this note, as I am closing the studio till 10/26 for a much needed period of R&R during which I plan ONLY artistic dabblings, seafood, nature walks, meditation & journaling. Ahhhhh! 1st SWAP UPDATE: The goal was for everyone to receive their basket & for everyone who made a commitment to keep it. Person #1 wrote that they "neglected to record the address" of their swap mate & promised to send a basket to Lois Keener on October 12th.; Person #2 "couldn't find the address" of her swap mate. Carol Oslage basket was to be mailed Sept. 29th.; Person #3 refused to send the basket she had received stating she "was sorry (her) life did not conform itself to (our) standards". She "was planning" to send a basket to Miriam Fink. If Lois, Carol or Miriam have NOT received their baskets by this late day please let us know. I would just like to say this: Most people agreed that being held accountable for one's commitments is fair; a few did not & appeared more sympathetic to the underdog, & less sympathetic to the disappointed parties. Someone stated a while back that we VOLUNTEERED to be Coordinators. RIGHT! As such, we made the decisions we felt we needed to make. SWAP COORDINATION IS AN EQUAL OPPORTUNITY POSITION. Anyone who wants to step forward & volunteer to coordinate future swaps may do so! I'm checking my notes here - Jan Hardt & Sue Bajczyk are the next two people who volunteered, in that order. The list can be extended at any time! Well, I just got a note from Anne who has returned from Germany. I was quite gratified to hear her say that the antique wicker baby carriages she saw did not rival that of my Grandma! So, if you have not had a chance to see it in the Culture Connection (German Ancestors) part of my site, please stop by! I do not work in willow & when I look at it, it blows my mind! Ta Ta for now! I'll see you after the 25th. Have a great birthday tomorrow. Bert - thanks for sending in your photos. I especially like the fish pouch - what a lot of effort to make all those details work. How big is it? Nicole Church - sounds like a great new job! Thanks for the Herman bread recipe. I used to make Amish Friendship bread, but never tried it for pizza or rolls or anything savory. Sounds good. Linda Hover (unlurked) - Sure am envious of your hardwood trees standing, or downed if they can yield baskets. Though I have to say I dearly love the temperate rainforest species we have here in the NW. I really have no practical advice to offer about your trees, except GO FOR IT! and tell us about your experience. I have pounded a black ash log once. You leave the log whole. I believe you can immerse the log in water to preserve it for quite a while until you have time to work it. I also have a glimmer of a recollection that the maple tree might yield you some interesting bark to work with. It will be enlightening to read the posts from all those knowledgeable folks out there as they respond to your questions. >From Kay Harradine in Washington State where the fall rain has arrived. I look forward to a show opening tonight and demonstrating tomorrow, but have to face a Sunday of cleaning out the goat yard, fixing fence and winterizing the animals. Happy weaving one and all. {*}-{*}{*}-{*}{*}-{*}{*}-{*}{*}-{*}{*}-{*}{*}-{*}{*}-{*}{*}-{*}{*}-{*} Subject: Chair Weaving Class Date: Fri, 16 Oct 1998 19:00:20 -0400 From: "Judy Mullins" To: Hi Everyone, Recently I announced a chair weaving class at Mullins Log Cabin in Kentucky. This past Saturday, I was diagnosed with Viral Meningitis. I got home from the hospital last night. The class was scheduled for Nov. 14th. I feel lots better than I did, and I'm not totally canceling the class. I want to make the final decision by the end of Oct. I sent e-mail to a couple of people that had planned to attend, and it came back to me. So, if you had made plans to attend, please get back in touch with me. If you can't reach me by e-mail, my phone number is: 606-824-4306 I will still take names of interested persons, and let everyone know if I am feeling well enough by the last of the month. If anyone has had Viral Meningitis, or knows a website that I can look at, I would like to know. Even some of the doctor's have different opinions as to how I got it, can it lie dormant in your body for a period of time, how long am I contagious, etc. Thanks for any information, and if you are interested in a chair weaving class in N.Central Ky., let me know. To Linda, from Mt. Washington, Md., I tried soaking a white ash tree in a pond for a month. It did not work to pound it. Brown Ash, also known as the basket tree is supposed to be the best Ash for weaving. Martha Weatherbee uses this from New England. So chances are, you might have that tree. As for the sizes of other trees, I like for white oak to be about 6 or 8 inches. in diameter. The smaller they are, the easier they are to work with. You would want the tree to be at least 8ft., to have nice long weavers. White oak is the best oak tree to use, you can strip the outer bark off fairly easily, but usually the way you work with white oak, is to split it into 1/2, then 1/4, then 1/8, then 1/16. You then use a shaving horse and a draw knife to make your weavers and spokes. Hopefully this answers some of your questions. Until next time, happy weaving from Judy Mullins in Grant Co., Ky. where it's a very warm fall day, foliage beauty, but cold weather can't be far away. logcabin@fuse.net {*}-{*}{*}-{*}{*}-{*}{*}-{*}{*}-{*}{*}-{*}{*}-{*}{*}-{*}{*}-{*}{*}-{*} Subject: Re: convention info. Also for those who may not be able to meet on Thurs. night, why don't you consider meeting on Friday, shortly after class. Depending on what class you have, they are all over by 5. So if some want to meet at 5:15 on Friday, in the Monroe St. lobby, plan on that. I have received a couple e-mails that Thurs. would not work for them because of other committments. So in case you are interested, THURSDAY at 9 and FRIDAY at 5:15. Happy Weaving everyone. NOTE: - if you go with a FULL van, where will you put all your purchases & baskets to bring home? You're photo made this old heart go pitty pat! I sent my swap basket out real early and haven't heard from the recipient yet...do hope it arrived. Because it was sent early, I sort of forgot about it. Then we had a week of rainy, dank, gloomy weather. My landlord had a heart attack and since I've lost my job and am home, have been going with his wife to the hospital to visit him. So, my spirits were sort of low, then there was a slip in the mail box saying I had a package! Do you know I couldn't imagine what it could be! When the clerk handed it over and I saw the size, I got excited, it had to be a basket from my swap buddy! Indeed it was. Oh, how I rushed home and forced myself to open it slowly, least I damage anything. Pam White from Maine made the most wonderful Star of David in red and walnut! This was a basket I always wanted to try. What a spirit lifter! It's now on a wall where visitors will see it. Pam, thank you so much for the basket, I love it! And, it came at the right time...it was the best picker upper ever! In fact, that was what I wrote about in my monthly column in our home town newspaper! To: Betty K: alias the sinus congestion and bronchitis queen. I guess if you are the queen, I'm a princess in your court..and we still have not had a frost so the ragweed is bothering my allergies. Good luck, I'll keep you and all in my thoughts.....especially Jim, who caused my eyes to moisten when I read about your children and how you are helping your daughter. Looks like Pam gave you wonderful advice, but I just want to say take care of yourself too. Also, we all need a little wallowing time now and then and it's OK to feel, "why me" but then be sure to get over it and get going. Sometimes in this society we get the impression it's not alright to feel sorry for ourselves, we must be brave and do the right thing. But the natural healing process allows for time to feel bad and it in itself can be soothing. So, do rage and scream and punch a pillow and then consider some of that advice Pam F. gave, and remember you are in our prayers. The advice on how to make an "x" when lashing was most welcomed, thanks. Went to a wonderful craft fair in Woodstock, Ct. yesterday. It was outdoors and very upscale. It was on the lawn of a Victorian house that is now the property of the Society for the Preservation of New England Antiquities. They had about 5 or 6 basket makers. The price range on the baskets was incredible...from reasonable to very, very, very high. Met a fellow WW there and we spread the word about joining this list. Want to wish "Good luck" to all who are in fairs this fall season. Getting ready myself for our church fair in November. Gail Caron even sent me two starters of the bread via priority mail. What a gal. It smells so good, I can't wait until it is time to bake it. Thank you to everyone who has sent me these recipes and Thank you to Gail who also sent me the starter with a recipe for it. I CANNOT BELIEVE IT, but I already received my basket from my swap partner. My basket was made by: Dolores von Rosen out of South Carolina. She wove me the most beautiful Shaker Hex Bowl or Wreath Basket. It is made of variegated colors and they are just beautiful. They are not browns, they are mauves, lavenders, and other and just absolutely beautiful. The work that went into this basket is truly admired by me and my family. I have taken pictures of it and now have to wait for my roll of film to get full and have them developed. Thank you, thank you, thank you for my beautiful basket. I haven't sent mine out yet, but I know what she is getting and it will be mailed tomorrow. I am sure she will like it. We have our website up and running, with some greatly appreciated help from David Collins. Please make a visit. If you don't see something that you are looking for, please make sure you contact us, as we LOVE custom orders. I want to remind everyone that the workmanship in my husband's bases is premium and the bases are as smooth as a baby's butt. Have let so much go around this house while I was getting ready that even I am interested in house cleaning. Really need to do a major cleaning, the things that Merry Maids don't do on there twice monthly cleanings. The Oct/Nov. issue of American Craft has a wonderful article on Leon Niehaus. I had a chance to buy one of his baskets several years ago at the Smithsonian show but just couldn't justify the $350 price tag. Of course now I am kicking myself. Also this the Crafts Report that just came (I guess the Nov. issue) has an article on Kari Lonning and her great stuff. I do actually have one of her very small pieces(it was in my price range) The larger ones are a dream. Anybody who can handle round reed the way she does deserves something. That's all for now. But I, too, having seen the pictures of other's swap baskets became brave enough to join this month's swap and yesterday I mailed my basket. I'm so pleased to have it on its way that I decided to write and announce it! Now, I only hope that it will be considered a worthy contribution. The recent questions about using willow prompts me to add an experience of my own. My friend and I decided to try using wild willow and cut the rods near a pond in her pasture. It was such a beautiful day we sat right there and wove some very primitive round, spoked baskets. Being a little quicker, I finished mine and we decided to head up to the house. As we passed the barn my friend stuck hers in the rain barrel to keep it wet so she could finish after supper. Well, she got busy and forgot it...for nearly two weeks! You guessed it...by the time she went back it had sprouted! To this day it's the most interesting basket in her collection. Happy Weaving, Barb Mullally, in Coldwater MI where it soon will be ...cold. {*}-{*}{*}-{*}{*}-{*}{*}-{*}{*}-{*}{*}-{*}{*}-{*}{*}-{*}{*}-{*}{*}-{*} Subject: Re: "Weavers Words" V. 2 I. 52 Date: Tue, 20 Oct 1998 15:03:36 -0500 From: tblack@iquest.net To: David Collins (P) Pam F: I'm so glad to hear about your grandma! How exciting! My own mother has lymphatic leukemia, so your discussion has certainly been near and dear to my heart. I'm curious, the chemo treatment they are suggesting, is it Fludora (tm), or chemical name, fludorabide phosphate? The side effects (or lack of) sound remarkably similar if not. My mother had this therapy 2 years ago for 8 months and had wonderful results. The tumors in her lymph nodes were significantly reduced in size and her energy levels improved dramatically. She did not experience any nausea, nor did she lose her hair. At the time, the hospital staff was nearly claiming this to be a "cure" for many different forms of cancer. Unfortunately for us, mother's type is very difficult to cure (I won't give up on the possibility of one), and she started a more aggressive therapy this spring. After a bout of pneumonia this summer, she is off chemo, probably for good if she has her way, but is beginning to fight back. She currently is using an alternative therapy called a trickle charger. This places small electrical impulses at the pulse points and theoretically purifies the blood without direct contact. She wears it for 2 hours a day. It's working. And while it may sound strange, if it works, I won't complain. If you are ever interested in non-traditional alternative therapies, I think my family may have investigated and/or tried MANY of them. Just ask! Linda Cleveland - Have you checked Earth Guild for the maple splint you're looking for? It's sort of a veneer weight. Not as heavy as the hand split oak in Betty Curry's classes. It may not be what you want, but could be worth looking into. Pam F - You certainly had some excellent suggestions for those in need of assistance. Thanks for posting them. I will be printing out your information to share with several people I know who might benefit from it. So glad to hear the good news about your Grandma, too! (A friend of mine recently had a mastectomy. I'll be sharing your chemotherapy notes with her.) Linda in Ft. Washington, MD - I'm envious of your ash treasure! Maple and oak are not treated the same way as ash in processing them for basket weaving. You can probably process lumber for bases as you would any other wood. Save several of the compound leaves so you can look up what kind of ash it is. There are books out that can tell you how to handle it. Someone with ash experience can give you more details - I'm still a wanna-be asher. Winnie - You may be able to get your ceramic grip handles from one of the suppliers on David's monthly Dealers List. I have seen big enough ceramic beads at craft stores, apparently made for macramé' work. You might be able to make those into basket handles. Some of them have big enough holes to accommodate round reed. What did you use for the dark weavers? Ruthanne Morningstar - Yes, I remember your discussion of the Hopi Ceremonial Baskets last fall. I look forward to hearing how the class works out. Enjoy your travels. Marty Zielke - Many American willow are less suitable for basketry than European willows. Weeping willow, although not a native of this continent, is particularly brittle. I did recently harvest some native willows here in Missouri. Once they have dried and I weave with them I'll report on how they behave & whether it was worth the effort. There are several sources for basket willows, both as live plants from which to grow your own and as harvested rods for weaving. Mandy Miller - Don't know your mom, but hope her recovery continues to go well. Chris Baker - Another option for pricing basket pattern is to print the price on the upper right corner of the camera ready original before you have the multiple copies printed. Dolores - what kind of gourd baskets did you see? Bonita Gentry - I found an interesting assortment of different non-ferrous wire at a local metal salvage company. Although they usually deal in truckloads and other large lots, they will also let me pick through and buy by the pound. I have some nice copper and some that looks like copper-colored aluminum. They'll need to be straightened, but should make interesting handles or wire baskets. Has anybody tried treating ordinary steel wire with gun bluing? I think that would be attractive for basket handles. The Kansas City phone book has several wire and wire product companies listed in the yellow pages, even after eliminating electrical wiring and cables. I sometimes use coated coat hanger wires. You could also try plain wire and paint the wire with a rust-preventing finish after bending it to shape. Maybe someone who makes wire handles to sell can give you a specific source for the exact wire you want. Sharle Osborne - On the rare occasions that I find a basket magazine or other magazine with good basketry information in a used book store, I usually buy it for myself. If I find any duplicates, I'll let you know. Susan Bowers Darabond - Enjoyed the story of your son's wedding. Hope your knee heals up soon. I've got a friend who is going to have her second knee reconstruction surgery some time this winter. She had the first one done about 2 years ago. Jim Buettell - Hang in there! I hope things ease up soon and you can get back to weaving baskets. I know (first hand) how difficult it can be to deal with depression. Just don't give up! Eileen - Have fun at AMB convention! Your tool marking advice is certainly timely. Maybe people will actually follow it! I try to keep mine marked.
