I had to discontinue the basketry survey. The server that was maintaining the survey went belly-up out of the blue. I'll try to find a new method for a survey. I revamped Weaver's Words home page so all of Weaver's Words individual pages are easier to find. I've moved all of your pictures to their own page for faster loading. Your pictures can be found at: http://www.iei.net/~davidc/pictures.html I would like to thank the following person for her donation: Ms. Joan Culler I received a suggestion from Ms. Kay Ames about setting up an Event's Calendar on Weaver's Words web page. So I have set it up. I started the calendar at October 1998. So if you have a basketry event scheduled for anytime during October 1998-December 1999, send me the information. Please include the following: Date of Event, Name of Event, Location, Contact Name and Phone Number. You just keep making it better and better! Sandra Kervin - I love the cattails you made for the front of your swap basket! Chrys Lunsford - Your woven birch bark work is most impressive! Winnie - Would wooden embroidery hoops work for you Welsh potato basket? Look for them in craft stores or needlework shops. You might have to buy two, since the outer ring usually is split and has an attached bolt & wing nut to make it adjustable. The inner ring is usually plain and solid. They come in many sizes, up to the quilting hoop size about 30 inches in diameter. I sometimes find these cheap at thrift stores with country craft quilt piece wall hangings on them. (Sometimes the wall hanging pieces are nice enough to make into throw pillows - a bonus!) Judy Benner - The swap coordinator (Gail) will send you a message telling you who to send a basket to. A non fire way to remove the little hairs from your basket is to use nail clippers or embroidery scissors. I haven't been happy with results of trying to sand rattan. You might be able to shave them off, but I haven't tried that yet. The other option is to clip the big ones and ignore the little ones. :=) Joe from Exeter, RI - Thanks for the tips about extending the life of your spray bottle for walnut stain. Do you leave your stain in the bottle, or pour it into a storage container after each use? Diane still in Beloit - I can't cite pattern name or authors, but I have seen pictures somewhere (maybe in a convention booklet?) of black ash and/or cedar bark combined with waxed linen in a small necklace pouch basket that was not an elbow. They must be out there somewhere! You could probably invent one. Deb Curtis - Fall is an easy theme to weave into just about any basket. For early fall, use materials in the colors of autumn leaves. Or ornament with acorns or other nuts to evoke the harvest. Or make a cornucopia necklace. For late fall, go with the bare branches look. Clear glass beads can simulate ice, wooden beads can represent ripe berries. For early winter, weave or overlay a white snowflake design into a dark basket or decorate a light basket with dark pine needle clusters. How about a basket in any material sized to hold greeting cards? A neutral basket vase or wall pocket for dried weed bouquets? (Mother always loved going out after cattails and milkweed pods and bittersweet in October.) Chris Baker - I go to extremes with themes and special touches on gifts for people I know well enough that I know what they like. I just think it would really be difficult to get specific on a specialized basket for a relative stranger. I've gotten some really strange frogs from people who are into 'cute' because they knew nothing about my taste (I am not into 'cute' at all, even though I have a couple of nauseatingly cute frogs in my house. They have other very special sentimental reasons for being here.) Not anything wrong with your suggestion, though. Hope I didn't sound too negative about it and that you didn't take anything I said personally. Happy Solstice everybody! I noticed one when I was looking through the Basketville Site http://www.basketville.com/htm/OldandNew.htm. Yes, I know they are imports but that might give you an idea of what one style looks like, anyway. Bert--I use that method for both flat backed and free standing baskets. I just pull the ring down into the shape I want before doing the figure 8 binding so if it is to be flat backed, I make the arc on the back side smaller than the one on the front so that when I pull both sides down for the binding, the back lip is higher than the front. The scientific name for the pennywort is Centella asiatica (used to be Hydrocotle asiatica). I pulled quite a bit of info about it of a herbal remedies website the other night. Rae--Yes, isn't Susie Vaughan's book great! I have had it for a couple of years now and refer to it often. It is so clear and easy to follow--both instructions and diagrams. And such beautiful baskets in it! The recipe page--I sent in a recipe for Savoury Toast but forgot to mention at the end that you should cut each slice into 3 "fingers" to serve! That's all for now. She works for the government and can not subscribe to WW from work, so she goes to the library and prints out the back issues. She had severe withdrawal when you put up the password. Andrea would love to contribute (she has lots of recipes!), but due to the circumstances, is unable to at this time. There are probably are others out there like her, so she sends her thanks and thanks for anyone who can't tell you. To Those Dyeing Seagrass - make sure that your dye bath is VERY hot or boiling and that the color is concentrated (no weak dye baths for this project). Place a rubber band or twist tie on the ends of the seagrass (it will unravel rather quickly when it gets wet!) and dunk a smal coil in the dye bath. Leave in until the color is right (remember that seagrass is already greenish brown so light colors will not work near as well as dark colors will) and hang to dry. I like to recoil the seagrass when it is still damp, trying not to untwist it too much (it will want to untwist and twist itself into knots). If it does untwist slightly - just give it a little turn when you put it in the rim to tighten it up. Already too cool here for me in PA! The skins vary in size (as do the fish) and I have them in black, red and tan for $7.00 per skin. Also, I've been able to procure a variety of antlers. Some small white tail deer antler that are great for wall pockets at $18.50 per pound and some artist grade, dark brown, mule deer antlers for $28.00 per pound. As always if you need them drilled out for a particular design I'm happy to do that for you. The summer tour in 1999 is still being plotted out. The coordinator could check them off their list. It might also be a good idea for everyone to notify the coordinator when they send their basket out. That will make it easy to verify that all the baskets got sent out on time. I'm not suggesting that the coordinator deal with problems, only be aware if there are any, and, say 1 month after the due date, let the maker know if there was a problem in the delivery of their basket. I think anybody who fails to send a basket out by the deadline should not be allowed to enter the next ---- however many swaps. Gail - My opinion about non-subscribers participating in the swap is that they should not be accepted (if at all) until after the sign-up deadline, and then only if there is space. Are they people who really have subscribed, but not before your announced cutoff date? I am much more comfortable with the thought of them being new subscribers. DeDe Harris - Really enjoyed hearing about your basket retreat. I haven't been to the Pacific Northwest in many years, but can visualize the landscapes and atmosphere. Rae Hunter - Thanks for the good book review! I like hearing what people think of various basket books. It doesn't matter to me if it's a new book or an old one. Diana French - Hardening crystals are used in candle making and available at most craft stores that carry candle supplies. (P): Lois - In addition to your tole classes, it might be worth your while to look at some of the painting booklets in a craft store, if you have one availaable. I've seen some that were very explicit in how to put a design together one brush stroke at a time. They tell what kind of brush to use for each effect and when to double load the brush (2 colors in same stroke to make shading). I suspect that by the time you went through such a book, you would gain enough confidence to strike out on your own. Was very surprised how big they were! Also after I sent them was feeling rather sheepish for sending so many - but not to happen again. Thank you again David for being such a wonderful blessing to we weavers! Also I want to thank all who have sent in about stains, stenciling, waxing... Such helpful information. And to those who answered my question about the cradle basket - thank you also! However neither of these were what my daughter wanted - such a picky young lady! So I'm still searching - what I'm looking for is a cradle basket that looks like a small bassinet, only with handles on the side for carrying the bundle of joy inside. So if this rings a bell with anyone let me know. Well I might be opening myself up for who-knows but here goes. I would like comments on the baskets I sent in...to ugly, to plain, not enough skill...let me have it. That's the only way I'll know the truth and what better advise then from my fellow weavers - so bring your comments on...can't hurt my feelings no matter what you say - it's part of the learning experience!!!! To those sick or recovering I keep you in my prayers. My printer is giving me that 'low on toner' message so have been reading WW off the mail server then saving it to another file. So I can't remember who said what - my memory is not what it use to be. And if I don't reply right away - which is lately - I've forgotten who said what. So please bear with me. Perhaps soon I'll get the toner replaced - one can only hope. Then I won't have to sit in front of the screen so long. Also if anyone is interested I would be willing to trade birch bark for reed. Also have access to pine needles if interested. And for those of you with unfinished egg baskets...well if you want to pay shipping I'll finish and send them back. Winter is coming and I always welcome more things to do when that snow blankets the ground. I know that may sound crazy, but I've been accused of that many times. Besides one persons sanity maybe another's craziness... Well enough for now. Lots to do before the snow flies up here. With the holidays rapidly approaching, I am trying to think of good stocking stuffers to make for families and friends. Usually I do some minis and turn them into pins or necklaces. My problem is the pin backs don't seem to stay on very well. I have tried hot gluing them on and also using regular glue, but the backs pop off very easily. Super glue doesn't even begin to bond, nor does Quiktite. Last year I resorted to using fishing line to tie them on. Any suggestions for what to do? Also, I have never really done any beading, but most necklace patterns have some beading accents. I like the way it looks, but the patterns just say "add beads". How do you get them to stay in place on the waxed linen. So far, they end up falling until they reach the basket, or fall off if it's a "tail". I tried knotting them on, but this looks bad. I don't think I'm doing it right. Any thoughts? I am also very curious about the waxing of baskets. Sounds wonderful. I have just used my white oak baskets for the outside or rough conditions uses, because they are more durable. My 2-year-old just wandered out from her nap, so I'd better go... That is why I use a combination (2 cups odorless ,or semi- odorless, mineral spirit, 1/4 cup boiled linseed oil, and I start with 1/8 cup of the Minwax after it is stirred well) stir this mixture, dip a piece of scrap reed in to test color if it isn't dark enough add more Minwax. The boiled linseed oil cuts the sealer in the stain, therefore it is better for your basket. If you have a stain that seems to be too yellow all you need to do is add a few drops of Ebony (not too much) this is a color of Minwax also.
