Visit the bookstore at: http://www.iei.net/~davidc/book.html I'm going to try and limit each issue of Weaver's Words to about 15 pages, but this means Weaver's Words will be sent more frequently. The reason for this is people with Juno accounts cannot receive large issues. Ms. Joy Moody sent me a picture of the basket she wove for the basket swap. One of the benefits of weaving during the 1980's was being able to get the two magazines The Basketmaker and The News Basket. Both of these not only provided techniques on weaving and some patterns, they also showcased basket weavers and their work. We were able to see examples of, what I think of as, museum quality basketweaving. One of those included in both of these magazines was Steven Zeh. The baskets that he was making then were enviable. If he is still weaving now, then these baskets must be incredible. Also, if he is asking thousands of dollars for his baskets, you must believe he has a solid customer base and knows what he is doing. He is not a novice. I think that he and those like him are doing what we all should be doing. He is educating the public as to the art of basketweaving. How else can we refute the stereotypes of basketweaving? We must support those of us who can price their work according to its true worth and artistic content. I find hope for all of us that eventually we will all be able to price our work by what it is worth and not just what we think we can get for it and not have to put up with the jokes about what we do. I am brand new to WW (first issue), but some questions I could help with, so will butt right in if that's ok... This is in regards to Shirley Burgess who was requesting a pattern for the peanut basket. I know I have one, but right now it's in my daughter's room, and she's sleeping. I'll dig it out tomorrow and see who the author is, and let you know. I don't recall who was asking about the IBA website, but it's defunct. The server we were on, closed up shop, so we did too. Since we were getting that service pro bono, no one can complain since it was great while it lasted. However, there are several vendors who have a lot of IBA related info on their sites, including membership forms. I am the membership chair for IBA and also coordinator for the 1999 convention (I know, somebody laced my tea that morning...). I may regret saying this, but... if anyone has any questions regarding either of these things, feel free to ask. I'll do what I can to help. I really enjoyed my first WW! So much information! I am a beginning weaver, so prayers would be appropriate too, as this feels like a big undertaking!! A grateful thanks to all who answered!!! My fishing creel will be a Christmas or birthday present for my angler. He has felt 'slighted' not having a basket to call 'his'! I am new enough to WW that I did not catch the original issue at the heart of the debate concerning personal information taking so much room, but may I cast a vote?? Personally, I enjoy learning a little something about the acquaintances I make through WW. It is that 'little something' that sets each of us apart. No, we do not need to turn it into a 'recipe exchange' because someone told of a visit to 'Auntie's house' for a scrumptious dinner of beef and noodles and cherry pie. Let's lighten up and enjoy what we have here, which to me so far seems like a wonderful bunch of people. I think there is a lot of hope, inspiration, good wishes and information to be had here and having 'personal information' being the carrier of these messages only adds another blessing!! Date: Wed, 2 Sep 1998 19:33:36 EDT From: DeeGrin@aol.com To: davidc@iei.net Hi fellow weavers. I am about to ask for some input. I have natural Walnut stain in 3 five gallon pails that I have had for over two years now, so can get different shades of walnut stain. My problem is I can't decide which is the best method to use when adding colored reed to the basket. I usually prestain all my spokes , weavers and Rim as I don't like to see where it doesn't take the stain if you dye after the basket is complete. I also think it definitely dulls the colors if you stain after you have made the whole basket. I have even started a basket and weave it up to the point where I will add color , then stain it and my remaining weavers and rim material , then complete the basket. What if you use the Walnut stain in a a can, do you spray after you complete the basket and doesn't this dull your color? Open to all suggestions. My Mother just sent me a long article on Longenberger baskets. I will send it to David so he can add it to his history of baskets if he wants. They make between 30-50 baskets a day, wow. I saw a lady demonstrate one at a local party. She used a mold and made it in less than an hour. Said they are each trained to make different baskets. A basket is not made until they receive the order. I have yet to make a Nantucket or one that uses eschuteon(sp?) pins so usually point out to people that mine on all held together with natural materials, no glue or nails. A friend also sent me information on a big Arts event in Evanston I. this weekend where a beautiful basket is featured on all the posters and in the papers . It is valued at $1700 made of brown ash and porcupine quills by JoAnn Russo. Is she by any chance a member of our Weaver's Words. If so congratulations it is truly a work of art. The L.L. Bean Catalogue is on the net and the Adrirondack basket by Lisa Nortz(sp?) is featured. It is really great to see baskets making covers etc. Have been weaving up a storm for a show the end of the month. Made the wastebasket by Susan Randolph Fantoni. It really comes out big and very nice. Not going to stain this one. Sometimes they just look nice natural. Hope our property off of Appalachicola doesn't get washed away by Earl. Thank heavens we haven't built yet. May not with three hurricanes hitting that area in the past two years. We'll be up to 800 in no time at all at this rate. I'm enjoying hearing all about the swap even if I wasn't involved. Peanut Baskets - Two different letters at once, that's a coincidence. I have seen one and a picture of a pattern that was on the web. But I just deleted my third try at coherently explaining how the one I saw was made. It had a small Williamsburg handle and a common base for the 2 baskets. They were not woven separately and then lashed together. I will try to get information about the pattern and include later. Judy Benner - in eastern Pa. (B) - You are right. An overlay is a short piece of reed that is added after the basket is woven to make a pattern. They basically fit between 2 stakes and the ends are hidden under the stakes. To use them you need to 'cut as you go' in case the distance between the stakes varies. Just take the piece of reed and measure from the middle of the stake on top of an 'under' stroke over the 'over' part of the stroke and back to the middle of the next stake/spoke. Then slip/work it under the stake on one side, lay it down and then slip it under the next stake and adjust it. This is much easier to do than describe. For an example go to the 'In a Hand Basket' website "http://www.inahandbasket.com/" and check out the Gibson-Curry White Oak baskets. The designs such as diamonds or arrows that Linda shows are the kind of thing you can do with overlays. I have a round basket from a class where the overlays spiral up and around the sides in 2 long curving lines. The instructor used 7 different colors that repeated on the 14 rows of the basket. But I chickened out and just used 2 colors. If you mix colors in the design, you can obviously use almost any scrap of dyed reed. It might be a good idea to keep a few extra pieces of the reed in case you lose an overlay later, I ran across a tip to do so somewhere. I have also seen patterns where the designs on the ash strip were painted or stenciled on overlays and laid over the strip that was used for the weaving instead of painting it right on the basket. Pam Feix (B?) - You don't need to apologize to me for calling imports "bad", I've never done a show, but I suspect that competing with them would set me 'boiling'. Some are really boring and slipshod. None of the kind we are talking about show the originality you put in your baskets. And it seems to me that a craft show is in violation of an implied 'contract' with both you and the consumer if they let people sell them. But the real tragedy to me seems to be the people who must make them and obviously are very poorly paid, or the baskets wouldn't be so cheap. And if the subject of 'cheap' baskets from hobby/discount stores comes up my 'public' verbal objection frequently refers to subsidizing the abuse of the workers who make them. I'm suspect they would prefer to make a living wage and produce/craft a quality product; and I contend (frequently) that people who buy these imports are subsidizing a type of abuse/slavery that offends me. Oh, dear, I'd better get off the soapbox and hope I don't offend anyone. Char (P) - The thought of feeding dinner to 30 boys who play soccer is mind boggling. It felt crazy enough years ago trying to fill up 2 teen-aged boys. Wow! I'm impressed. I too have been having trouble finding the motivation and time to weave, but all things pass. Or at least that's what I tell myself. Billie in Va. Beach (P) - Glad the damage wasn't worse, hope life is calming down now. Kathie and Brenda (P)- Just what are "Elephant Ears"? Obviously I haven't been to the fair lately. {*}-{*}{*}-{*}{*}-{*}{*}-{*}{*}-{*}{*}-{*}{*}-{*}{*}-{*}{*}-{*}{*}-{*} Subject: Weavers Words Date: Wed, 02 Sep 98 19:47:06 PDT From: "Ralph/Annetta Kraayeveld" To: "David Collins" Just a few comments .... I have followed the discussions regarding patterns, etc. I was a public school teacher for years. I had many creative ideas which I gladly shared with whomever wished to use them and was glad to have ideas given to me in return. I even shared some of my patterns--and later found them in books of ideas which had been compiled by others and sold. I know that I am unable to create a basket pattern but others are unable to create some of the other things that come to my mind. I am not in any way indicating that I think a pattern should be copied and sold as one's own but I think if you sell a pattern and I buy it you have no right to keep me from selling the basket (s) I make with that pattern. The thing I like best about my basket guild is that we are willing to share and to help each other along whether it be in teaching a skill, in creating a new design or whatever--we are willing to encourage one another and to help promote the skill of basketmaking. I have many basket books and buy one every time Barnes and Noble gets a new one in and that is almost never. I will certainly treat myself to your site. Having the books pulled and in one spot is very helpful. However there were two I didn't see but I will keep looking. I chuckled at the group packed in a small car. Sometimes one just doesn't think about everything . I have attended basket convention for many years but I always drove. Not a problem. Two years ago I FLEW to the Missouri Convention. When I signed up for my baskets I never thought about size just about what I wanted to do and I got the ones I wanted. I managed to get all supplies and baskets packed except for one very large bushel basket. I managed to get it home but not without a few problems from the airlines and shipping UPS was not an option. Next time I will choose smaller items or remember to take some very large boxes. I have seen many versions of the MINWAX stain. I have found that one must experiment to get the desired color you want. I use 1 cup of Golden Oak Minwax to 2 cups Mineral spirits plus 1 tablespoon of boiled linseed oil. If I want a darker color it is 1 cup of each. I also found that using a generic mineral spirits gave my baskets a "dirty" look. I didn't like it at all. It dull the baskets. I am told that there isn't any difference between generic and regular but I am not willing to try it again. I had too many baskets with what I believed to be an ugly color. I also like Longaberger baskets. I have many I collected before I start making mine. I enjoy going to Dresden, OHIO and looking at the office building which is in the shape of a market basket. They have plans for a complex with many shaped baskets to house part of the business. I have also benefited from their high prices as it does help mine to sell in this area. Special thanks to Joy for the Basket swap. We had trouble with my e-mail provider switching servers and the time the exchange was taking place. I was not aware at the time that other sturdy baskets were being woven domestically and so many imports are too flimsy to be used. I never frequent the craft shows, so I was amazed when the world of weaving opened to me. No, I would probably not buy another L. basket, but I do use the ones I have and appreciate their sturdiness. My 20-year-old daughter asked me to teach her to make a basket. She loved weaving a simple market basket and immediately went through my reed and handles and patterns to take weaving stuff home with her. It was so much fun to share the first basket experience with her and share this wonderful art/craft/obsession. In St. Louis where we are all watching Mark McGuire make baseball history... MS Creations has a large selection of her items in clothing and stationery, etc. Go to http://www.bewley.net/mscreations/index.html and you will find it there. Enjoy!!! I thought we could all get together and compare lists of people to notify so we did not duplicate sending e-mails. Too late. Also, you will probably get some answers for me. I thought I was going to get another chance to look at the survey before sending out. My name and e-mail address are spelled incorrectly so I don't know if this will go through. Correct is balleweg@ionet.net. Nancy Jacobs has written to tell me how they arrived at dues amount. We can figure out a possible amount by how many people respond. She said they figured the cost of postage and newsletter materials and they make a little bit for the treasury. Do you have a particular Saturday that you could come up here for the first meeting. While the ball is rolling, we should go ahead and schedule something, don't you think? Let me know if you get any answers, okay? I will type out a copy and send to all I know without a computer. It's a name tag woven from Western Red Cedar, Alaskan Yellow Cedar, bindweed, waxed linen, and osier beads. It is sewn onto a leather backing and can either be worn as a pin or around the neck using the attached waxed linen chain. I have never worked with natural materials and was having a difficult time visualizing them when Kay or Bert would describe natural baskets and woven items. Now I see for myself why they are so thrilled with their materials. They are beautiful - and the cedar smells wonderful too. I hope everyone is as pleased with their swap basket as I am. This was a great idea Joy - thanks. I have no problem accepting the assignment for coordinating the next swap, but I will need your assistance to find out how to do it. I agree that two or three times a year is best. It's a lovely Wall basket with a ceramic heart decoration and reddish trim, from Kelly Ballenger of Georgia. THANKS KELLY! As far as my mail lady goes, she will drive up to the house, lay on the horn, wait for me to come out and then hand me my package and say, "The rest of your mail is in the box". I have to walk out to get it. Isn't it easier to hand me all the mail, than to stop, open the box, put the mail in, close the box, and then drive up the driveway to my house?? I enjoy WW's as it is. I don't want to see any changes. AND, if people start to answer people via individual e-mail, then the rest of us won't be able to read the answers to questions that we may also find of interest. Isn't that what this forum is all about. David does a WONDERFUL job. I can't believe anyone can find any fault with anything. BUT, That's My Opinion!!
