I keep telling her not to mix her medication and booze. So I forgive her since she was more than likely tipsy when she sent that post. Her typing was even slurred until I corrected her spelling. Gotcha back Paddalyn (Paddalyn is what Pat prefers to go by). Ha Ha Pat. I WIN!!! ;-) Just a little history, Pat and I love to annoy each other, but she really does prefer Paddalyn. Don't forget to wear your red ribbons at IBA convention. Also there's been a bunch of basket pictures added since last issue. Be sure to check them out. Date: Thu, 18 Mar 1999 18:35:52 PST From: "Marilyn Thompson" To: davidc@iei.net Hello Basket Weavers, Just a few lines to share with you. John McGuire-Sorry to hear you were hurt. My thoughts and prayers are with you. Pattie B. I would like to buy a copy of one of your patterns on the snowshoes, my mother has an "antique" one and I would like to make a set myself. Any info from your end would be greatly appreciated. Carolyn W. I have 3 house cats myself and I never had them declaw but wished I did. They are to old now. Get Picabo declaw. It will save on your furniture and Picabo will still get around fine. Ask your vet about it. Larry B. I've been to the Midwest Basket Focus and it was the most wonderful experience I ever had. It's small, personal and cozy, plus it was great not to have a TV or phone to take our time away from nature. Plus our meals were all together and great fellowship. Sunday worship was great as we had a fire in the stove and just being up early and alittle cool outside was great! I've not been able to go back but will some day. Roberta C. Sounds like a basket that David needs to have on WW. Can you send him a picture of it. I would like to see it. Nora V. We had 2 Finches about 10 yrs. ago named Micky and Minne. They were so nice to have, but Micky died and Minnie soon after as she must have been lonely. Birds would not make it here with 3 cats today. Just a few more days till the IBA. Hope we all get want we need and enjoy your time here in Indiana. Today was nice and hopefully spring is just around the corner.. Happy Weaving everyone :0) Marilyn %%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%% Subject: Re: "Weavers Words" V. 2 I. 96 Date: Thu, 18 Mar 1999 23:41:02 -0600 From: Roberta R Comstock To: davidc@iei.net "Weavers Words" Vol. 2 Iss. 96 Can't remember who asked about a quadrafoil. The word simply means four-leaf, as in four-leaf clover. It is also a twill cloverleaf design that was woven into the base of some shaker baskets. (Trefoil = three-leaf; cinquefoil = five-leaf.) Crystal - Aren't allergies a drag?! You might consider trying coiled pine needle baskets stitched with thread, or twined waxed linen pouches, or some sort of natural local basket material that would not have been chemically treated. Lori - You asked for an address for ordering something, but didn't say what you want to order. Tony (and anyone else who feels they are being wordy) - It's a always pleasure to read long posts from people who have interesting things to say. Judy Benner - How wonderful that everyone is so pleased with the basket class you taught! Even though you are not trying to do more classes to make a profit, don't undervalue your time and the effort it takes to put a class together. You will probably get a better response from would-be students if your classes are not priced too differently than other beginners' classes in your area. (blush) I try. I love being here and all the information we exchange. Winnie - If you want to stick with larger materials, go for the seven-ply when you order your waxed linen (although, once you get the hang of it, four-ply will probably not be too fine for you). You'll notice that there are a Lot more colors to choose from in the four-ply. I always urge people to spring for the color chart when they want to start working with waxed linen. Is it inexpensive, well worth the cost, and downright inspiring to see all those wonderful colors. The chart also includes a sample of each weight available. (From Royalwood) Billie in Va. Beach. - Our computer phone line doesn't have call waiting and if someone tries to call in on it while we are on line with the computer they just get a busy signal. Maybe your line Does have call waiting, which would allow the incoming call to interrupt by signaling that an incoming call is waiting. We never answer the computer line either, as it is always a solicitaion of some kind. Ugh! Diane in Kansas - How much longer will you be in this area before you move back to AZ? Will we see you at the April Woven Circle meeting? I hope so. Marilyn Thompson - To participate in a WW basket swap, watch for the announcement of the next one. The coordinator will then tell everyone how to sign up. Follow their instructions and have fun! Nothing says you have to wait for the announcement to weave a basket for swapping. If you are concerned that a swap will happen during your busy season, go ahead and weave a swap basket ahead of time and have it ready to go when the time comes. you can read about previous swaps in the back issues of WW on the web site. It is so nice to hear from Pam Thompson (did I spell that wrong?)...from the Florida panhandle. I remember going to Afternoon in the Park (a wonderful craft fair in Valpariso, Fl) and seeing her hubby in the center of the fair with his shave pony--it was absolutely fascinating to watch him work. At the time, (I wasn*t selling baskets--still learning to weave) I couldn*t afford to buy one and I*ve regretted that ever since. Please, please, can we not go back to that conversation about marking personal vs. basket stuff.....Tammy, most of us don*t "know" each other (meaning we have never met face to face), but we do sort of know each other only by sharing personal tidbits and stuff about each other and our cats and dogs and spouses (but not in that order). So I*m afraid you will have to skim the personal stuff and hopefully find whatever you are looking for. And another thing about "Afternoon in the Park" (or was it called Saturday Afternoon in the Park--gosh, it*s been awhile and my memory is lost temporarily--so says my doctor)--Patti Hawkins was there, too and I was so mesmerized I stood by her booth forever just looking (I was a new weaver, remember--and felt humble!)-- I*m still going to painting class but see absolutely no improvement so perhaps this is something I should just cross off as something I*m never going to master and move on to something else--such as woodworking.... or pottery.... Date: Fri, 19 Mar 1999 07:43:32 +0000 From: Tony Stubblefield or Dean Meredith To: David Collins/Weavers Words Greetings, Pam on the panhandle - I am not sure if I know what you mean by "Ozark style" white oak baskets. Do you mean drawn splint vs. pulled splint? Everyone - Sorry if I was unclear about ash swelling when wet comments I made. The water and the swelling doesn't hurt the ash material at all, but the swelling can hurt the overall weaving by causing it basket to buckle. Hey look a short one! I am late for work now though. I knew I shouldn't check my mail until this evening, but I just couldn't wait. I had a feeling another WW would be in my mail. Until then, Tony Stubblefield St. Louis, MO http://www.tetranet.net/users/deanandtony/baskets.htm %%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%% Subject: WW Date: Fri, 19 Mar 1999 10:22:41 +0000 From: Sandy Atkinson Organization: Atkinson's Country House To: David Collins Hi All, Just a few hints to questions that popped up with WW. 1) First and formost, I feel so bad for John McQuire! Our prayers are with you John. I pray also he has the spirit to overcome this crises and keep weaving. He is to talented to quit. 2) I would never use anything with polyurethane in it to finish a basket with or anything that says it will seal the wood or fiber. You need for your basket to breath to have a long life. If your wood stain says it will seal, you can make it into a non-sealing basket stain with this formula: 1 cup stain - 1 cup ordorless turp - 1 or 2 tablespoons linseed oil. 3) Also, using any acrylic paint on a basket will cause the basket to become brittle. If you desire a particular color for your basket and do not want to use a dye, (which will normally fade over time) just keep in mind that the reed will become brittle and have a short life span. Even if you water down the paint, which is somewhat better, it still we be somewhat brittle. 4) How to get more hours out of the day? So very easy, give up cooking, and cleaning. I tried it, but the family wasn't happy. Oh well, can't have it all. 5) Looking forward to NC convention next week. All those traveling to Indy or NC travel safe! Office Max should carry blanks from Avery. Most office supply houses should, too. Avery and Paper Direct have web sites that you can go to... Paper Direct also has pre-printed brochures, catalogs, stationary, to help you... I don't have the URL's for these at hand, but if you search for the name, you'll find it... If you don't like a folded tag... you can cut the tag in half... so from one sheet you can get 20 tags... I've also made postcards using the same technique. If you can't find the web addresses, let me know and I will try to search the black hole, sometimes called a file cabinet, for the URL's. With sore fingertips... Not complaining too much! :>} Anyways, want to address this to Tammy from SE Michigan, regarding winter weave 2000 in Mentor, Oh. Char C. usually sends out a message as to when to send her e mail to get on the mailing list for winterweave. The mailings are sent out later in the year (maybe Aug-Sept range). I think her e mail address is Charweave@aol.com. Hope this helps.... I enjoy everything on weavers words, and Bert, I see you as kind of a leader too! I like the bits of personality that come through on each members postings, but I do think we have to avoid going too deeply into some aspects. I think that asking for thoughts/prayers is ok and people should not have to apologize for asking for them, I don't think this is the forum for actual prayers being printed. If we think of ourselves as a big family, there will always be squabbles but the love of basketry is always there weaving us together. Ok, off the box now! Unfortunately, we have no local guild or even class available in our small town, so most of my ideas come from pictures and web browsing. I have two questions: 1) I make stain from sweetgum balls and ammonia. I love the color, but wonder if there is anything I can add to my stain to give it just a little luster. Does anyone know? 2) I am interested in learning to do some twill patterns but have trouble following complicated directions (I am a visual learner, for sure...) Is there a particular author who has very simply written directions for twilling? I have done simple 1-2-3 twill patterns, but want to advance. Any suggestions? I know that we have had a lot of banter about not ans. questions but I must say that I am really sorry to not have replied to all who did ans. my question. I decided to teach my granddaughter a very small button basket without the handle. I let her pick out the colors that she wanted and had her start from the laying out of the base right on up to the lashing of the rim. I was not looking forward to the project but as I had stated before I did not want to discourage her and so I resigned myself to devoting my afternoon to just teaching her. For an eight-year-old she did excellent. Her colors were wonderful and she did a nice neat job. We have it on our front counter with keys inside and I have showed it to my weaving friends and even they were impressed. Thank you all for you contributions and advise. My one problem has been that the "Weavers Words were appearing so fast and furious I was not able to give them all the time and attention that I would of like to have had. I don't have much time to spend on the computer and it took me a couple of weeks to get through them. I must admit it was also due to having a house full of people and my daughters wedding in the planning. But that is all done with and I at last have cought up and I am even able to take the time to start looking at all of the photo's that David has posted so wonderfully for us. And now I am also looking forward to being able to join into the next swap when ever that may be as I had no time what's so ever for the last one. Oh and yes, one question? Where is ebay? I missed that part of the posting. And yes this is being posted from what some people think of as Sunny Hawaii. But today is a cold one. I actually have to wear a jacket. Moey, 12-year-old female calico -- her name is short for "my little fool (in french)". My first basket: A small melon basket that hangs in my kitchen window and holds a plant. It is very crude but I still love it and it reminds me of how much progress I've made. Easy question: I ordered books from Amazon.com. How do I know if David got his percentage? I was disturbed to learn about Dolores' unethical experience with a teacher from Texas and while many know who she is referring to, most WW readers will not. My good friend and fellow teacher, Jean Cadmus May lives in Texas and she is NOT that person. Jean will be teaching next week at the NC convention, so be sure you look for her and listen for her wonderful laugh. Because of the conflict of convention schedules this year, many of us are disappointed that we will not be able to attend both. I will miss seeing my North Carolina friends and colleagues and they too will miss coming to Indiana. As I mentioned, Jean May will be teaching in North Carolina as well as Eileen Laporte and Patti Hawkins but I will be selling their patterns and kits in my vending room at Indiana. Jean has sent many kits of her popular classes and a nice selection of patterns. Eileen's patterns are extensive and you will need at least one of each (remember, we can't have too many!). Patti's Twill Baby kits are HOT and adorable and with only a limited number available, come by early ---- Room 153. It is going to be a wild, weaving 5 days in these two states and what fun we all will have. So whether you are in Indiana or North Carolina remember to thank the volunteers who made it possible, keep a smile on your face and be happy! (P)- Storm Damage As some of you may recall, my building here in Zumbro Falls, Minnesota sustained a great deal of damage in the wind storm last June, while my hubby was away on a six month construction job down south. After he got home in October, we contacted contractors to do the job and since they were are busy with other storm damage, we were put far down on the list. Well, we can finally see the end of the tunnel and the work is nearly done, insurance adjuster should be over on Monday to check it all out and then we will get the remainder of the hold back money to settle. Thank goodness, what a disruption to my wicker repair business and our personal lives! (P)- Family dog. Two years ago, hubby came home with the most darling chocolate lab female pup and I had a fit that he would go out and buy another dog (we have had several dogs in the past), and want to keep her upstairs here in our tiny apartment! Well, she has matured and I have mellowed to her being around and she has the run of my shop during the day, if hubby doesn't take her with him, and she spends the night in the apartment rather than in the cold, hard doghouse in the kennel :) It's cold up her in Minnesota at night still. The only thing that I don't like is that she is beginning to shed and still goes outside to "potty" twice a night. It's just like getting up with a baby all over again! (B) Baskets. I have just discovered the most wonderful website, and not to outdo or rock the boat as far as David's picture postings, but I have posted several of my baskets, bassinets, wicker rockers, wicker doll and baby buggies, seat weaving restoration, family pets and the storm damage pictures to this site. I have about 10 albums now, on the various subjects and would invite you all to check them out to get an idea of the kind of work I do and antler baskets I make. The site is called PhotoPoint at: http://www.photopoint.com. My individual albums can be directly accessed by going to: http://albums.photopoint.com/j/AlbumIndex?u=16796&a=80069 then when you get there, you can go to the other albums by just getting the pull down list and clicking on the one that interests you. (B) Basket Workshops and Seminars: A few days ago, I sent information on three workshops that I will be teaching at for David to post to the events calendar. Information is listed under "Weekly Net Picks" at http://basketry.miningco.com/ (B) WW Basket Pictures- Kathy Ervin I absolutely loved your baskets with the cedar and various other natural materials, they are really wonderful. Kathryn Gromm isn't cultured basket willow great for weaving? It is so forgiving, smooth and feels good to the touch. I have gathered my own river willow and made several baskets from it and have also repaired many antique willow doll buggies and antique willow furniture that was made from cultured willow. I much prefer the cultured (grown especially for baskets and furniture) willow to the river willow because it is easier to work with. We don't have any cultured willow patches around here, so I send of to The Caning Shop, H.H. Perkins, and Bonnie Gale for mine. Joanna Schanz's willow books are wonderful and so descriptive and informative! Nancy Hedberg you do wonderful Nantucket's and I admire all the beautiful basket pictures you just added to WW. How long have you been at this? Well, I guess I have gone on long enough, that's what happens when you lurk for a while, all the stuff just ends up spewing out in one great big, long letter! Sorry, will try to write less, but more often. Love reading all the WW but am having a hard time keeping up with all the other distractions in my life! Love you all, take care. ~~The Wicker Woman/Cathryn Peters/MN~~ Where the sun is coming out and warming things up. http://albums.photopoint.com/j/AlbumIndex?u=16796&a=72541 %%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%% Subject: General post and IBA Convention Date: Sat, 20 Mar 1999 12:38:41 -0500 From: martyhln@juno.com To: davidc@iei.net Hi David and World Basketmakers...I hope you all are having great weather here we have sunshine, hurrah! Well I am counting down the days until I leave for Indy, I can't wait. I hope to meet some of you there. Look for the red ribbon, which I will have on my name tag... David I will keep an eye on your mom, and try to get her in as much trouble as I can...Norma we will have fun...Pat Steinmetz, do you need help to coax David out. I think that is a great idea. Come on David we can try to get you in trouble too, it would be fun, And after convention we are probably, going to keep you busy and out of trouble anyway. So come on David join the fun We love you, and need to see your smiling face I just had a great idea if he doesn't come to convention we can take the convention to him. How about it Pat?...Dolores, it is terrible, that you and other people got took. That is why we all need to remember to pay by credit card on things not taken in hand, or at least by check, then we have proof that we did pay for the things not received. You can not publish names because of possible reactions, but it would be mighty tempting to me...On Nantucket's, the protective coat mentioned in John McGuire's book Nantucket Tradition is the best I have seen, it works well for me, anyone interested in Nantucket's, no doubt has this book, or should buy it. Martha Lawrence's, book on Nantucket's is excellent also. If you are Interested they are both great and they have different ways to explain things, between the two you should have a good source of information. I am recommending both for your personal library. This is a great group, I love your opinion's they are all great. The long post are great. If this only covered basket stuff, how boring would it be? For those who don't like the personal stuff, go to the end of David's page and use his browser to just get the basket stuff. But you will miss a lot of the fun stuff that goes on around here. Like all the talk about Kudzu, Snow Shoes, and lots of other stuff that I get a kick out of. What is basket stuff to one is garbage to others, I like it all. Thanks to all of you for your words, and opinions. Some of you just make my day. I have liked getting a Weavers Words just about daily, good job everyone keep it up...Lois you should have the basket to contain seagrass done by now, I hope you liked doing it. Until next time Peace and love to all. Have some fun go weave a basket, it clears your mind. Warmest Regards... It's yet another wonderful feature that David has provided for us! Joy - You were fortunate when you Dad burned whatever that poison thing was that it didn't get into your lungs. I shudder to think of it. Poison ivy, poison oak and poison sumac should Never be burned! (Breathing the smoke could be fatal.) YellowSnap@aol.com - I think you can make a wash of acrylic paint thinned with water. It can add some color to a basket without covering the reed entirely. I try to avoid the painted look you'd get if you just use the paint straight without thinning it. Carolyn Willoughby - I think your flower girl will probably love whatever basket you weave , especially if she gets to keep it after the wedding. My first thought is something wide and shallow with a handle that will go over her arm. Sue Ann - I'm really enjoying the willow discussions. I'm trying to decide where in my yard I can plant my starts that they won't be in danger of getting mowed. I think some of the new flower bed on the west end of the house is going to become willow bed. Pat - Why not get your mother to subscribe to Weavers Words? We'd love to hear from her. I thought it grew on the Georgia coast and the northeast coast of Florida (near Jacksonville) as well. Pam on the panhandle of Florida %%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%% Subject: Basket stuff Date: Sun, 21 Mar 1999 08:32:21 -0800 From: "Kati" To: Denise in Tulsa, OK - Weaver's Stain also comes in clear. Ask your supplier. I use it all the time because I love to weave in COLOR and the others just mess up the effect. My mom uses some kind of cheap (less than $2.00) that she buys at Wal-Mart to spray on seashells. It works very well and I've been thinking about trying it on a basket I could live without. The finish is beautiful on the shells and lasts a long time (over 4 years). She gets in the same area that you buy spray paint. I'll keep you informed. Carolyn- We got an adult cat two years ago and our vet told me that he would never declaw an adult cat. he said I could have it done, but he didn't do it because of the discomfort for the cat. We didn't and have been very happy. Maybe you will find a good home. And for Pat-please ask your grandmother to contact me-I would love to correspond with her. E-mail @ Katie@carolina.net Everyone else - Have fun at the NCBA convention! I'll be thinking about you all! See ya' Kati in NC where it is SPRING! My tulips are ready to burst!! %%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%% If for any you would ever like to cancel your subscription, simply send me a message with "unsubscribe" as your subject.
