I did, It's my 45th B.D. !!!!!!! A while back someone was looking for leather straps for a basket pattern, was it here on W.W. ? My husband is a leather crafter, mostly custom work. He buys a hide and cut his own straps. Hides come in all different weights and thickness. If you are still looking for this, you can email us and let us know what you need, we'll try and help. But never too busy to read WW. Those little dots that come out of the black walnut dip. I use a nail brush to go over the basket. It brushes in those dots or makes them dissolve and it also works the dip through those stubborn spots that don't want to take the dip the first time. I just give each basket the once over and it seems to work for me. Thank you for the reminder of the vinegar. I had put it in my first batch and forgot to put it in the others which has resulted in a lovely aroma. Diana: Send pictures of your antler basket when you're done. Kat and I are excited for you... who said jealous? Since I have more stuff on my list I need to get to it... Happy February! We finally have a sunny day in Okinawa. Always looking forward to receiving a new mailing. Joy, I just found out that my site's address was changed (the provider didn't bother to tell me) to: www.aeroinc.net/users/nantucket They are supposed to be changing it back to the original address so that I don't have to re-submit it to all of the search engines and other web pages where it is listed. They did tell me that changing it back wasn't a "high priority" item for them, so they weren't sure when they would get to it. AGGHHH! So for now first try the address above and if that doesn't work, hopefully the old one will: www.aeroinc.net/~users/nantucket The only difference in the two addresses is the mark before users. Thanks for trying it. Judith, The idea using a hemostat sounds great. I have a good friend who is a doctor, so I'm going to check with him about getting one. Nancy, One thing I don't miss out on with teaching in the high school is those crazy valentine, Halloween, etc. parties that we had with teaching in the grade school. The purple heart wood sounds beautiful. When you finish the picnic basket, you need to send a picture. I usually use cane for my staves also, except for large sizes such as a 16" oval. Then I use 3/8" flat oval for added strength in the staves. A weaver on Nantucket Island recommended I do that. I am trying to finish up a Nantucket purse that was ordered. With no school on Monday, my goal is to finish up the purse and have it ready to ship. Purses are my least favorite Nantucket basket to make. I am never satisfied with how the lid fits or looks and end up taking it out and redoing it several times. Do any of you have that problem? Date: Sun, 15 Feb 1998 16:09:44 -0500 From: Ernest C and Julie C Kleinlein To: David Collins References: 1 Joy: Talking about brain cells and high on stain, everyone really should be careful with any of the stains, natural or oil based. A friend of mine was telling me, that a girl at basket class passed out and stopped breathing at class one day, while staining her basket. It was black walnut stain, made with boiling water. She got some on her hands, it penetrated her skin and she had allergic reaction to it. So we all should be careful, with what ever we use. I am real funny about putting food in my stained baskets too. I leave them natural, just to be on the safe side. We get more that enough chemicals in our bodies, from places that we don't know. Well happy basket weaving! Can you tell us more about the Quinalt tribe & the respected position of the basketmaker? Perhaps we can go live there? Nancy: Didn't mean to be obnoxious about traditional Nantuckets vs. contemporary. The purple heart wood must be just beautiful.........I'm curious if you have cut custom bases from it for your Nantuckets?.........or lids? Also, sounds like your picnic basket project will be WONDERFUL when it is done! I forgot to answer earlier: I had suggested 1800's printed material for copyright free graphics & there was a question about where to find it, or which resource....I would try any antiques dealer in your area who carries old magazines, books or advertising papers. There's no specific publication I can think of; you just have to poke around. Sometimes you can find these at flea markets or auctions at a cheap price, or as part of a box lot. Donna: congratulations on your new arrival & all the exciting things happening there. Looking forward to seeing your new offerings & hope you got that uninterrupted time to weave that you so wanted! Creating studio time is paramount to our health & well-being. Often, we don't realize it till we've been away awhile. Dede: I wish I had seen the Antiques Roadshow you mentioned! Can you tell us how mini that Mini Egg Basket was? And how old? I've seen minis listed in antique collectors catalogs/books, but usually at several hundred dollars. I am lucky enough to have a wonderful ash & sweetgrass thimble cover passed down in the family. The tribes in this area used to make them in the Victorian era, together with embroidery sizzor covers & needle cases for the sewing box of the lady of the house. Brenda: who made that huge basket in the picture you posted? It was great. Still working on the new basket pattern Twisted Sister!..........more later............. So now I talked my husband into helping me send in a photo of the wax linen egg baskets that I make. Bert, I hope you get a chance to look at the photo. Your interest in my pattern caused several WW friends to order patterns and kits from me. So thank you. I also hope that those of you who are trying my pattern or kit will let me know how they made out. I think my class at the Port City Basket Weave-In was a success. Once we got past the God's Eye everyone seemed to relax and enjoy the different color combinations of each basket. Many bought extra kits which is a good sign. In June I'll be teaching the same basket in Kentucky's Bluegrass Area Basketweavers Seminar and then in South Carolina's Down Home Basket Gathering. Hope to meet some of you there. My name is Diana Selvey. I'm from Albany, Indiana (near Muncie) and belong to the Buck Creek Basket Guild in Yorktown. I've been weaving for about eleven years. I'm taking my first Nantucket class at Restoration Products next month. Willowe's Basketry and Restoration Products are both less than an hour away. How lucky can a weaver get? I have a question about tea staining. In the back of the now defunct Simply Baskets magazine were staining tips. The recipe called for baking soda and tea bags. There was a note that said NOT to use the tea stain on oak handles, that a chemical reaction causes the handles to turn a dark green that cannot be removed. Have any of you that use tea stain had this experience? David, thanks for the list and your links.
