Date: Fri, 30 Jan 1998 18:55:15 +0000 From: webfoot1@together.net To: "davidc@iei.net" David and all you weavers! I disagree with Christine Wekwert's idea of using a glass juice bottle for an alcohol torch! I'm sure the juice bottle is not PYREX and could very easily crack from the heat transmitted from the metal cover. If this happens, the alcohol spills and ignites very rapidly! To me, this is far too dangerous! You can buy an alcohol torch from a scientific company that is designed for this use! Just think what a blaze from a juice jar of alcohol would do!!!!! Talk to your local pharmacist and he may be able to locate one for you! Personally, my wife and I use small scissors to cut off the hairs. There are many very good scissors available through companies that handle flytying materials for fisherman. Also, there are good surgical scissors available, however, they are more expensive. I would be glad to email anyone addresses for flytying companies. Bert Comstock OSHA (Occupational Safety and Health Agency) might be very interested in the story, but I don't know if they pay. When I was working for the Lab., OSHA came around and inspected everything! You can't believe how thorough they were! However, it is for your own good!!! They were especially concerned because of the radiation. There should be a listing in the telephone book under U.S. Gov't. Sorry I got carried away, but I was involved in safety issues at work! I decided with all the people I am meeting online that I should have my own screen name. Thanks. It has been a while since I wrote in but wanted to say hi to everyone. To Sandi Howard, I am in Moline, IL. Not sure how far that is from DeKalb but at least it is in the same state! As far as singing the hairs on baskets I don't do it either. Always afraid I will catch the whole thing on fire no matter how wet it is. But then I also don't stain my baskets as I prefer the natural color of the reed, maybe that will change someday who knows. I love getting WW and find the conversation interesting and informative. I think Billie Dorris is the Queen of Helpful Hints...she always comes up with the neatest ideas... I was interested in the discussion of singeing baskets. I have always singed, probably because I'm too impatient to work with the manicure scissors. I have a few tips about it though. I have tried all types of mechanisms (Propane burners, etc) and find the best to be the barbecue lighters that are readily available at grocery and discount stores. They also have re-fillable ones that use butane fuel. They have an adjustable flame so it doesn't get out of control. As we all know, flames burn "up", so I keep the flame ABOVE the basket. This might sound odd, but the bottom of the flame right where it is coming out of the lighter is all you need. You do not need the top of the flame, because that is where the carbon is produced. Always move the basket so the flame is on top of the part you are singeing. If you turn the basket sideways you will get carbon marks - which are easily removed with an eraser, but make more work. If you hold the basket above the flame you will catch the basket on fire. I have never had a problem using this method. I use Weavers Stain and try to singe before I spray (always outside) but sometimes I forget. I have found that after the stain has dried a few days, the flammable fumes have evaporated and it can be singed. I hope this helps someone, if it isn't too confusing. I love the weather reports and feel really bad for you all in the Northeast. I have a daughter in Rochester NH who just missed the worst of the ice storm. I did live in snow for a long time and don't really miss it. Although its been so wet down here that we are growing gills so we can breathe underwater. So Long from Wet Louisiana. The classes I got at the NCBA are: Rosie Kiley, Shaker Style Pin Cushion Box. Amy DeSmet, Woodbase Gathering Basket Martha Wetherbee, Lonely Kitten Heart Many of us from the east TN area tried to sign up for Bonus Classes, but they were already gone. We all have one free day, out of the four days of classes. So we can always buy or take kits with us and to together in our rooms and weave, or sight see! It should be great fun! Anyone that subscribes to Weavers Words, should put A WW on their name tag, that way we can meet each other! We had a bad snow storm here in east TN, anywhere from 15 inches to 3 feet of snow. We had no electric for 4 days. I now know how all the ice storm folks were and still are feeling! We were very lucky to get our power back in 4 days, when many of you were out and still our out! East TN, or any place down south just get paralyzed by bad weather, because we do not have the equipment to maintain the roads, and really don't want to pay the additional taxes needed to buy the equipment, for a few days out of the year. Joan B: We live near Gatlinburg, It is a great place to visit. Their are many crafters in the area. But I am un-sure of classes offered. When are you coming through TN? You should be able to get great room rates this time of year. We take classes here in Greeneville, from many local girls. There is a shop called Basket and Things, that on Feb. 6th, 7th, and 8th - Jody Schester(Un-sure of spelling) is coming to teach 3 classes, S.W. Jug, Trinket Basket, and Gourd Purse. First I want to thank all of you for your wishes on my kitchen fire. It is hard to say that fire is good but I must admit that it woke this family up. We bought fire extinguishers for each level of the house and put more smoke alarms that have the lights so you can see. Amazing how quick that smoke turns the house black. Our kitchen will be done this weekend. We had to repaint and redo some woodwork but all is well. Sandy...when you get moved down here give a holler. I have been working on my craft room. I am ready to start weaving again and have moved my staining and burning of baskets to the outdoors. I have a question.....I have been asked from my daughters girl scout leader to teach the girls basket weaving for a fiber arts patch. They thought maybe if the girls could make something for mothers day it would be nice. The girls are 12-15 years old and there are 20 of them. I am going to donate all the supplies so I am trying to find a basket that wouldn't have handles and be easy enough for a first try. Any ideas would be appreciated. Just had a mini class in my house for 5 friends to make the wax linen egg basket you asked about. Two never made a basket before and they did great. I use #3 RR to form the handle and ribs. Two yards of thread for each God's Eye. I then weave in many different colors to get a beautiful effect. If you are interested in my pattern e-mail direct. Joy - I'll answer your questions about the exhibit I saw in San Diego when my friend returns the book I purchased "Fiber and Form". The baskets were old- I'm sure some were from the late 1800"s. The tribes were from Alaska all the way down the coast to Southern California. I'll be more specific later. The book is beautiful and it happens to be the one that someone in WW donated for a raffle gift. The temperature would have to be extremely high, for instance 100 degrees or more. The case indicates not to store next to a furnace or in temperatures of 120 degrees. Of course, you wouldn't be standing next to the furnace to stain anyway, right?! I would recommend taking a large appliance box, like a TV box, cut the flaps off, turn it on its side, place it on a workbench (not next to your furnace) and use it as a spray booth. I stain in my garage or down in my basement during the winter months. Once you stain your basket, set it on a plain brown paper bag near the furnace to dry, not on the furnace. We are the makers of Weavers Stain. Should you have any questions or comments, please email us or visit our web-page for staining tips. www.weaversstain.com Thanks, Dollie P.S. Hi David!!! My fingers are itchy though and ready to go! I received a letter from my brother-in-law who is working in Taiwan for the next few years all about the baskets he's seen. He sent me an amazing brochure from a railway station exhibit of truly fantastic baskets and photos from a historical village that represents the different tribes that used to live in the Taiwan area. There were some real relics of baskets! One of the nice things that came out of letter was that since I'm in the family he and his wife are more sensitized to basketry. He waxed poetic about the form and the function aspects of the different baskets he has seen as well as how our 20th century "material" is plastic (ugh!!). Just was nice to know that by just working with the materials I love and making baskets I have in some small way changed the way a person looks at baskets. I think I need to go visit them before their stint in Taiwan is over!! I'm going to be in North Carolina in August this year (probably the Outer Banks area and Asheville) and would love to teach workshops for interested groups (stores, guilds, etc.). I can send a proposal packet if anyone could send me addresses. I also am wondering if there's anything absolutely fantastic I should see???? We've had multiple illnesses in our immediate family. My husband's mother and sister both have terminal cancer and he's been running back and forth to Columbia S.C. to help care for them. Then my mother fell and shattered her shoulder (had it replaced! Isn't modern medicine amazing?) and needed care in Richmond, VA. For a while we were just waving to each other in the driveway. Things are somewhat back to normal here, for now at least. We had a big snow last week. The paper said that everyone served by our power company had lost power. The snow was very wet and there was about 18" of it which is really something for us. (How did you and yours manage, Julie?) There were lots of trees and limbs down. We lost an apple tree in our back yard. Pulled up by the roots and deposited on the roof of my workshop. I couldn't get in the door until part of it was cut away. No damage to the shop or the contents thank goodness. We were out of school all of last week (and again tomorrow). I used the time, along with the time spent with my mother, to finish the 6 nantucket bridesmaid baskets for my step-daughter. They really turned out well, and I'm enjoying looking at them until she comes to claim them. Today I cut staves for a 16" rectangular picnic basket. It'll have a purple-heart base and double swing handles also of purple-heart, and also a rim of the same. I can't wait to get it started tomorrow. It'll probably take me most of Feb. to get it finished. In response to the question about trying to singe the hairs off of a newly woven basket, my dad, who taught me to make Nantuckets, told me to singe it the way I would a chicken. Now, I've never singed a chicken in my life, but for a basket, I use wooden kitchen matches. I'm very careful, and have never had a problem. I singe before putting a finish on. After all that work, I'd hate to have it go up in smoke. Mandy which was worse, the mess in the house, or losing the basket? My husband's comment was, "Is she still making baskets?" I told him he seriously underestimated a basket weaver's commitment to her/his craft! Mindy, I haven't forgotten you're out there. Maybe now that I have those 6 wedding baskets behind me and some time out of school I won't be so driven. I hope your school year is going well. Mine has been a challenge. David, thanks for all you do for us.
