I have just returned from my father-in-laws funeral and thought I would relax with a bit of mail. I am not up to much chatter but would like to take the time to respond to Esther. I love getting basket magazines in the mail. Matter of fact I thrive on it. I was very disappointed that SIMPLY BASKETS is not longer in publication. It was an excellent magazine and yes I did receive a refund for my remaining issues. I too Paid for a subscription to INTERWOVEN NEWS again a wonderful magazine. They however did not cash my check and that has been since June. At this time I hope they don't because I finally balanced it out of my checkbook. Another magazine to try would be THE BASKET TREE. They are always on time. However the publication is not as nice, but they are on time and I enjoy basket literature. Address is 6 Timberland ALISO VIEJO, CA 92656. I don't remember the cost. Thanks to everyone who sent me info on the "Chicken Coop" basket. One of our customers (I belong with the Country Seat) asked about the pattern - one of her customers asked her to make it. We're still not sure if this pattern is what the woman wanted or not. Does this pattern use a "D" handle or a notched handle and build the lid around it (like a feather basket)? She only gave the woman a vague description. We don't know if she actually saw this pattern or saw an antique basket. - Joy and Linda- The "Hen" basket isn't the right one unfortunately - that would be too easy! - Karen in Ohio - I was going to comment on the Longaberger basket comments - then burst out laughing when you mentioned "Longanecker". Because my last name is Longenecker! I'm constantly asked "Oh, these are the famous baskets from OH?", "Oh, Longenecker baskets, you do all those home shows?", "Oh, (as they look right at my name tag) Longaberger baskets, my friends collect these". This is the most frustrating part of doing shows for me. It's hard enough to face the fact that there are people who would rather buy #95 in a series of 100, than buy #1 of 1 because it's an ORIGINAL, without having to have my work compared to factory made baskets. I weave at all my shows, to demonstrate and for something to do. I'm always amazed at the amount of people who will still ask me in disbelief "Did you make all of these baskets?" or "Who makes these baskets?" - Chris from NorEsta- Phyllis from Interwoven News has moved, she was also ill. The combination has pushed back the magazine considerably. We have heard from her, she is settled in and hopes to have a new issue out soon. The latest issue of Basket Bits #27 is out and filled with articles of antler baskets and an antler "Hen basket". Simply Baskets is refunding money, we have received our refund. I'm sure it will just take Cathy a little bit of time to make it to everyone on her list. I really enjoyed reading all the comments and enjoyed it as much as I enjoyed going to the North Carolina basket convention last March. It is great to see I am not the only basket case out there. I made my first great sale to a Shaker furniture shop in Evanston IL. last spring after retiring as an Occupational Health Nurse. My goal was to sell one basket at their lovely shop. They ordered 30 of my baskets so I have reached my goal in life and now should be able to sit back and relax, but instead I find myself weaving three to four baskets almost every day. I am getting ready for my first big show in Gainesville Fla. for Christmas. Hardest part is knowing how to price baskets and how many to make. Must go get busy . Thanks again. Check this out. I have a class scheduled and a lady who signed up for it called and asked if I could make it a special class for moms & daughters. Well, OK, so far. I told her that I would take a couple of kids if they were really interested, etc. Then she says that it would be two people for the price of one - the moms would only 'help' the daughters make the basket. Excuse me? If I have to deal with questions, demonstrate how to do something, etc., the person is a student, too, and should pay for class. Has anyone else had this sort of thing happen and how did you handle it? I just canceled the class - nobody else was signed up for it yet & I just wasn't going to do it the way this lady wanted. How do you handle requests for classes for children? I find that the person usually wants a large group, a small basket, & a cheaper price than I usually charge "because it's just kids". I don't usually like to teach children - neither of us has patience for the other, so I just say that's why I won't do the class. I have been sooooooooo busy with shows I have been literally weaving 14 hours a day. Since the first weekend in Sept. I have done 8 shows and been gone to NE and MI's convention for a week each. I have been weaving a little for a friend who had neck surgery and had several shows she was unable to weave for and I also am the resident basketmaker at the museum in the town where I live. I only have to keep this pace up for another 3 weeks and then I will go back to a semi normal life again. If I end up in the home weaving underwater before the 3 weeks are up, I'll insist on taking my computer with me so I can keep up with what is going on in the basket world. TeeHee The show I am doing on the 15th of Nov. is opening day of gun deer season here in MI. All the men go north and all the women go shopping. It is usually a very successful craft show date. It's snowed all night and is supposed to snow again today so I hope the road crew guys didn't all go deer hunting as we women who stay home need them cleared. Andrea, the basket shop you are looking for is Restoration Products. They are a very nice family business and I am sure you will be happy with their prices and selection. They have a web site, however I don't know the address, but I am sure if you go into basketry and type in Restoration Products that you can find them. Thanks Nancy for the plug on the Honey Pot. I have a bear eating honey painted on the lid of mine. I have seen several times bears dripping with honey at craft shows and thought how cute they would look next to that basket. I myself haven't made the basket in years, but after I get through with this hectic schedule I might just make a new one. Your wooden bee and beehive sounds really cute, and I too am big on embellishments. Karen it was so nice seeing you again at convention and I'm really glad to hear your shows were successful. Empty boxes or tubs after a show is always a good feeling. Are you going to Indy this year? Avis I have been working with antlers for a while now and haven't boiled any yet. Most of them I have bought are old like the ones you described and there generally isn't any meat on the antlers. Maybe you were planning on making a basket on the entire rack. If you are the part of the scull and hair left on the antlers would add creativity to the basket. I always cut my rack in two and use the two antlers separately and there is never any meat left on the antlers themselves. I have bought some racks that still actually had the ears on them, but once the antlers were cut off there was nothing left. Also Avis several of us have been chatting on Wed. and Sat. night on Donna Webers chatline the address is http://www.bcwan.net/~cweber/chatroom.htm Pam @ @ @ @ @ @ @ @ @ @ @ @ @ @ @ @ @ @ @ @ @ @ @ @ @ @ @ @ Subject: Re: Fairmont, In. Jayna--good luck with your first craft fair--you*ll do fine. I have 2 small ones left and then I can have a vacation--sitting on the beach with a book!--and congrats, Andrea, on your first sale! I think I was cursed on Donna*s basket chat line this past Wednesday...someone was talking about a man coming to class with his wife as he perhaps didn*t want her out of the house alone--and at my class Wednesday night, half way through the class, a husband showed up with a 2 year old.....he said the little boy wanted to see his momma--he missed her. So I allowed them to stay and the 2 year old chased my child-disliking dogs, got into everything in the basketroom, and of course didn*t listen to his dad tell him to either behave or they would go to the car (if I heard this once, I heard it fifty times...)....and the husband had "read" a catalog from Gratiot Lakes and said "I know all about this weaving stuff now"--and proceeded to tell us....and then told me he wanted his wife to take a class, preferably the next one, in "uneven rim"--that*s what she needs to know...(he means wall building).. so now I have to print up a blurb stating (what I thought everyone understood), "NO KIDS".... I truly do need a vacation.... I do so enjoy the Wednesday and Saturday chats on Donna*s page.....there is even an 18 year old weaver--a neat kid! I got two issues (Winter '96, and Spring '97), and then nothing. I talked to Phyllis Scarbrough (the editor/owner)earlier this year. My partner and I host the annual Mackinac Basket Retreat each year in August. Phyllis wanted to do an article about our retreat for the November '97 issue. She later contacted me and said she didn't have time to do the article because they were moving to Wisconsin about the same time, and she would be busy with the "current" issue. I have tried to contact her via e-mail, snail mail, and phone. No luck. I asked Linda Braun (Baskets Etc) who seems to be in the know, and she had no idea how to contact these people either. My conversations with Phyllis led me to believe they were not a fly-by-night operation, but I am beginning to wonder. If they were having problems getting the magazine out, that is acceptable, but I think it would only be common courtesy to let the subscribers know. She has our addresses and knows how to contact us, but we sure don't know how to contact her. I have been weaving for about 17 years, and have tried to subscribe to several basket magazines through the years. I have not had luck with any of them except "Just Patterns". Someday that obscure basketmaker from Canaan, Ct (Ha Ha) will have a name bigger than Longa...//WHO??? :) Congratulations to you also, on your sales. I haven't sold baskets in years at a craft fair. I found them to be a Tremendous amount of work, costly, time consuming and not too productive as the holiday season is when the market is saturated with crafts. Too much to choose from on too many weekends from Nov. thru Dec. It's nearly mind boggling! I give a great deal of credit to those of you who brave the craft fair rounds. " Linda: Since you raise Ostriches, have you ever thought of making an "Ostrich" Hen Basket or an "Ostrich" Egg Basket?!! How about an Appalachian One Egg Basket for Ostriches?!! This could be the start of something BIG!!! :) :) :) Have you ever done that painting/etching work on eggs? I don't know the proper name for it, but first you blow out the interior of the egg (and wash it out?) then either paint it or etch it with fine drilling tools (Dremel?) You'd certainly have a larger medium to work with than usual. Maybe you could trade Ostrich eggs with someone (cleaned out) for basket materials? There is a woman in Norfolk, Ct who does this with eggs. I understand some of her eggs are in the Smithsonian and are in private collections here and in Europe. My interest in early Indiana history and my love of basketweaving have been combined in a most interesting manner. First, know that my experiences with craft fairs have been mediocre. Yes, I made some contacts, but sometimes I barely paid for my booth. In addition, there were hours of tedium while I wished to be weaving (and sometimes wished to use the facilities). This summer I was invited to demonstrate and sell my wares at a pioneer traders' market. My friend, who poses as my weaver's apprentice, and I had two days of beautiful weather, a lovely lean-to under which to work, and wonderful "pioneer" artisans all around. I made the most sales in those two days than ever before, AND I wove and met people who were truly interested in the art and craft of basketweaving. It's working out that we've been invited to be the Village basketweaver and apprentice which means that we will be able to weave in a village cabin along with other costumed villagers. In addition, there is a mercantile onsite which sells the artisans' work. I would never have imagined that I would be involved in such a stimulating project! My point in this long story is to suggest that some weavers may be able to incorporate another interest by pursuing similar situations. Look for local groups interested in re-enactments, visit a rendezvous, call an historical society, or your library to inquire about living history "museums" or parks. Weave on!
