At our recent Deer Creek picnic , we made basket carriers for Sprite bottles or a water bottle-really cute. We used a rope handle, but the sample had a leather handle. The leather was very nice and I'd like to do that, but the sample had a nail or something metal through the two rims and the leather to make it stromger, I am sure. Has any one used a brad or nail through rims? What do you suggest.? I'm trying to drink more water and this carrier was so cute. Thanks for any ideas. @ @ @ @ @ @ @ @ @ @ @ @ @ @ @ @ @ @ @ @ @ @ @ @ @ @ @ @ Subject: Weaver's Words Date: Sat, 14 Jun 1997 10:16:21 -0500 From: mlower@mail.isbe.accessus.net To: davidc@iei.net Marie, I really like Weaver's Stain which is an aerosol. If you buy a box (6 cans), it runs about $6 a can. I usually use the walnut finish and can spray several baskets from one can. Of course it depends on the size of the baskets. It has a nice sheen to it. It is made by The Weavery, but they only sell it in bulk. I believe minimum order is 6 boxes. But I know Restoration Products (800-562-5291) sells it in smaller quantities and there are probably other suppliers who also carry it. Glemby" To: davidc@iei.net Hello dear friends. Looking at my garden and wondering about natural stains. I always put a clear plate beneath the vases that I have my iris in, due to the purple drips from the flower. Does anyone know how to make a stain from iris?? It's such a vibrant purple. Thank you to Lynne Pawley for the url for Willowes web site. They showed a lovely apple bucket with a wooden base, saying it was a good beginner's project for those who have never used wooden bases before (me). Do they sell the bases? Have to admit it was another sleepless night and looking through their supply list at 3am, am not too sharp. Happy weaving and continued thank you's to you David, from Jayna in central Massachusetts. @ @ @ @ @ @ @ @ @ @ @ @ @ @ @ @ @ @ @ @ @ @ @ @ @ @ @ @ Subject: Re: "Weaver's Words" Date: Sat, 14 Jun 1997 22:31:27 -0400 From: Marie Jordan To: davidc@iei.net References: 1 David, I want to subscribe to this list, and hope this note is what I need to do. I've looked through a few "back issues" of Weaver's Words and recognized some names from the OLD list! Yahoo! It was wonderful! I've been weaving for almost as many years as I have been a third grade teacher (5 years), although it feels like I've always woven. I went to IBA this year and it was almost overwhelming. Something about "like a kid in a candy store." Lately, I've been teaching my teacher friends to weave seats on footstools. They have all been surprised how beautiful they turn out. I'm very pleased to have received your e-mail. It feels like getting back together with old friends. Weave On! I, like many of weavers, was a member of the Basket List. I've missed all of the tips and chatter of Shirley's list. My name is Monica Baker and have been weaving for close to 7 years. I don't get to weave as much as I'd like but hope to change that soon. I live in Okemos, Michigan (near Lansing) and haved worked for MSU for 17 years as a Computer Operator. Have been married for 13 years and have a 12yr old son. I have a question for all of you: do you know how to make the wood bases for baskets? My husband is in the construction business and I was hoping I could get him to make bases for me. How far apart are the holes drilled, how thick should they be, etc? Any help would be appreciated. I best close for now and get back to work. :-) Monica Baker Okemos, Michigan 21329mb@msu.edu Fan of 1997 Detroit Red Wing Stanley Cup Champions!! @ @ @ @ @ @ @ @ @ @ @ @ @ @ @ @ @ @ @ @ @ @ @ @ @ @ @ @ Subject: Subscribe & Intro Date: Sun, 15 Jun 1997 12:15:08 -0400 (EDT) From: LMHOVER@aol.com To: davidc@iei.net Hello, everyone. I'd like to introduce myself, my name is Linda Hovermale, I live in Ft. Washington, MD, and belong to the High Country Basketry Guild (HCBG) in Northern VA. Hi, Ann and Billie! Its taken me a little while, but I've finally found where everyone has been "hanging out". I've been making baskets for about 10 years now, it seemed like a fun thing to do at the time but quickly became an obsession, but its still fun. Haven't been doing much weaving lately because of work, although I was lucky enough to take the Langston's Nancy's Southwest class through our guild in May. What a terrific basket! Well, I've been busy this morning printing out some past digests to find out what everyone has been taking about and now need to find time to read them all. That will have to come later though, its time to be off to work. Looking forward to the next issue. Thanks David. I am from northeast corner of Il. and I am getting ready for my first big craft show. Our guild is participating and we all are suppose to have 50 baskets ready for the 4th of July. I don't think I'm going to make it. I make splint baskets and a couple Nantuckets. I really like this educational forum and appreciate your time. Saw a cute tie on. Just take a cute button (the kind with two holes in the middle) and thread some raffia through the holes and then tie it in the middle of a raffia bow and tie it on to the handle of your basket. Looked real cute and was something even I could do. (The Indiana list seems to be at a very low ebb after its recent crash, though it started very well, hope this one keeps going - basket lists seem to have bad luck) Here's a recent message that I sent out to the other basket list, hoping it serves as an Intro. I've been making willow baskets for about 4 years now, slowly at first, but making a real effort in the last year or so. I sympathize with those of you taking willow courses - took me quite a while to get decent shapes, willow definitely needs a firm hand. I just did my first selling! (I have a full time job, so I don't really have enough time to make AND sell baskets. Unfortunately the washhouse/basketstore had reached the stage where it was dangerous to open the door, you could disappear in a rain of baskets. Baskets must be one of the few things where the finished article takes up so much more space than the raw materials. The willow comes in bolts about 3 foot round and different lengths eg 3ft - 8ft). The craft fair: It was a bank holiday - so it was a 3 day affair, put on at a local folk music festival. 35 UKP for a stall in a marquee (tent). A couple of friends are trying to make a serious go of craft fairs this summer, so they hired a stall.... but three days and all that money was a bit steep, so they sublet some stall to me. (I paid a 1/3 fee, and got to stand around looking dumb for about 1 and 1/2 days. (They sell hand dyed floaty cotton scarves - for a few pounds a piece so no real conflict between us.) I'd got all my baskets together (16 including a couple of iffy ones to put at the back). (I also put out about 6 pairs of handspun MKnit socks to gauge interest (yes - I've been knitting socks too!). Day 1 - (I wasn't there) sales - 4 scarves , 0 baskets (aargh!) Day 2 - morning (me on duty) - 0 scarves , 1 BIG basket :-) DAY 2 - pm (other 2 ladies)- 5 scarves , 2 baskets (One BIG, one small) & 1 pair socks DAY 3 - me and another - 12 scarves, 0 baskets and & 4 pairs socks At this point, I'd got about 50 pounds over the stall fee, and decided that was at least not a disaster, but not to give up the day job. (the other stalls were v. quiet too - not just us). Next weekend, I'll be trying again (one day only this time). I've already managed to 'restock' ie I've made 3 more baskets. The ones that my friends all wanted to buy (I put them off till after the craft fair) were the small round shoppers - so I'd made lots of these. At the fair though, the ones I sold were big oval shoppers (the top priced ones). I've now decided that predicting what people want is tricky, and I've given up. I've restocked with a few smaller round/no handle baskets - for fruit bowls/flower arrangers, and see what happens next. Agricultural shows are probably going to be better for these large items, but the satll fees are MUCH higher - and this is supposed to be my hobby!
