Spent years in solid state physics, medical physics(I managed to get some baskets from the Marshall Islands when I was there) and high energy physics. Now I carve decoys, make some baskets and help my wife, who is a basket instructor. We have obtained some black ash logs that I am going to pound out shortly for baskets. We both enjoy going to the basket conventions and take coursed. I prefer to make baskets on molds because they tend to be symmetric. Looking forward to your future lists. I'll try to make this short (though usually I'm not!) because I should be down cutting kits for this weeks class. However, when I saw a REAL LIVE DIGEST with no error messages, attachments, and lots of chit-chat, I nearly fainted, so naturally all other responsibilities went out the window. Well my name is Karen Johnson (business name The Eager Weaver) and I live in Brookline, NH with my husband Phil, our children, Andrew 6, Cameron 4, and Audrey 2. Andrew hates when my time is taken away from him when I do baskets until of course I make him one (of his choosing) or I tell him that, that is where Christmas money comes from! I have been weaving for almost 4 years and have been teaching for one year. It all started with teaching a class for Women's Fellowship at Church, that turned into 3! (All the same basket and our church only has 100 official members!) Then came the phone calls and the begging, "please can we do more". (Linda - see what might happen - if you want more details on how it evolved - please e-mail me directly.) With support, encouragement (it was really Phil's idea that I pursue this) that The Eager Weaver was born. I have been having a lot of fun (a lot of work), and have made lots of new friends. I only teach once a week, sometimes twice, but unfortunately students don't always know how much goes into the prep and dying! It is nice to see some former Basket List members, Linda Marshall (how'd you get that 1st message in). Grace and Forrest - you guys are too funny!!!! Billie Dorris - how's the weather in VA? Lori Hopkins - I really want to come to your campground - i.e. the e-mail a couple of days ago! Thank you David for this undertaking. I hope that we all realize how much work Shirley did and what David is doing to keep us together in the format to which we have become accustomed. So many hellos to old friends and many hellos to the new friends we will make!!! Oh yeah (I promise this is the last thing!) is anyone going to Stowe Basketry Festival next week? I am going, Wednesday and Thursday I'm taking Nantucket's, Friday a tote class with Flo Hoppe, and Saturday a knotting class using waxed linen. Stowe next week our new list - all is well with the world! :) Karen Johnson Brookline, NH @ @ @ @ @ @ @ @ @ @ @ @ @ @ @ @ @ @ @ @ @ @ @ @ @ @ @ @ Subject:Re: "Weavers Words" Date:Mon, 05 May 1997 21:43:38 -0400 From:"Carty's" To:davidc@iei.net, coltsfan@usa.net References:1 Thankyou David, I was suffering from Basket List withdraw. Hi my name is Mary Carty, some of you may remember me from the late basket list. I live in the South Jersey pines. I have been weaving for over 12 years. I teach both baskets and Mt. Dulcimer in my shop in Mt. Laurel NJ. My son(Steven) and I run the shop during the week and my husband helps out on the weekends. I am also Delaware (Lenape), my family has lived in this area since the 1600's. I do traditional Native American Baskets . I drive my family crazy with some of my ideas. I like doing antler baskets, because no two look alike. We have a website if any of you would like to see some pictures of my work. I will be giving a class on antler basket in Kentucky this summer. The school is located in Bardstown. There will also be classes in Dulcimer going on during the week. Anyone wanting info can e-mail me. Please excuse my e-mail address, my husband is a master fitness trainer with the NJ National Guard, it is his nickname (drpain@net-gate.com) . Hope we can get some good discussions going again. Thanks Kathy Johnson for the tip about the new list. If anyone is interested we are have a live chat on Sat nights at 9PM. Everyone is welcome to join. It is located at www.craftmall.com hope to see some of you there. It is neat to have a live chat with basket makers of all over the world. My favorite is round reed, but I enjoy other types as well. I have been weaving for 4 years, and have been teaching for the last year. Teaching beginners is especially fun. Ridgeway" Organization:none To:davidc@iei.net Hello to David and Weavers, I recognize many of your names from the Basket Digest, and I'm happy to be back with a friendly, i.e. chatty, list. I've been weaving about 12 years or so. It's hard to keep track after a while. At present we are adding on to the house so that my reed and other projects can be consolidated from the attic, shed, living room, dining room, etc. Right now even the van is storage! I like working with round reed (a la Flo Hoppe), but there isn't much of a market here for it. I also enjoy Nantuckets and rib work. I'm sick of stair step baskets but have orders for two. They are almost guaranteed to sell quickly, so are good "rent money." To:davidc@iei.net Hello to David and all basketmaking friends! Many of us from Shirley's old basket list have been in withdrawal and are very grateful to you David for giving this a try. Thank you! David asked that we introduce ourselves, so here goes: My name is Kathi Calvert and I live in Tinton Falls, New Jersey, not exactly basketmaker's heaven. Not much interest around here in baskets. I'm hoping to change that over the course of time. I have been making baskets for about 4-5 years, first starting from a kit I purchased from an ad in a magazine. From there, I searched to find suppliers and have been teaching (trying) myself from books and patterns. I am a member of NCBA and made it to the convention last year and am hoping to go next year, also a member of BNJ, but have not been very active with them so far. BNJ's annual meeting is always on my daughter's birthday, so I have not been able to attend them. But, I keep my membership hoping at some point it will click. I'm trying to get info on joining the Northeast Guild-if anyone knows who to contact let me know. I also love to do folkart painting and incorporate that with my basketmaking to do some local shows from time to time. I'm presently working hard on putting together a basketry supply business and catalog. This has cut into my weaving time, but is exciting. If anyone would like more info on that, e-mail me privately. I am truly grateful to have met so many wonderful basket friends through the internet. Since there's not much happening around here with baskets, it has really expanded my world to be able to communicate with "our kind of people". I love all kinds of baskets, but favor more traditional types, especially nice, old, beat up ones. Although I haven't attempted to make them yet, just looking at pictures of Shakers and Nantuckets gets my heart pounding. this time of year, it seems like there are so many baskets to make for gifts. I'm planning to make a wood bottom basket for my little one's teacher for an end of the year gift from the class, since I'm the class parent. I was thinking about taking a photo of the class and decoupaging it to the inside bottom. Has anyone ever done this? I've never done any decoupaging , so I'm not sure about it, but thought it would be a good idea for her to remember the class by. Any suggestions are welcomed. I'll sign off now as my little one is home sick from school today and needing my attention. Looks like I won't get to make that basket I had planned today. Looking forward to lots of fun reading from Weavers Words. Thanks again David. I have been weaving baskets for about a dozen years and have made this my full time job for the past nine years. I teach 3 classes a week in my home workshop and hold down the fort while my husband of 15 years travels the world for his job. This gives me a lot of time to weave and raise our Labrador Retrievers, of which we have four. I enjoy weaving baskets of all kinds and will be attending the Stowe Basketry Festival for my 4th year, in about a week, where I always pick up something new. This year I am attempting willow and birch bark...can't wait! Thank you , David, for starting this List. I am a former subscriber to the Basket List and really missed it when it was over. Johnson" To:"David Collins" Hi Everyone, I was just thinking today about what I will plan to offer for the my fall session. I only teach once a week and plan ahead so that I can print out a schedule complete with pictures, because descriptions sometimes just don't cut it! Well I thought a good question to begin our new list with is: (multi-part) 1. What baskets have been successful in fall schedules with Christmas and gift-giving in mind? (teachers) 2. What baskets would you like to see during the fall schedule with Christmas and gift-giving in mind? (students) Last year I had good success with New England Totes, Shaker Wall baskets, and double wine with or without the swing handle. Right now I am suffering from a severe case of basket withdrawal. Because I am a full time social worker and go to grad school part time (Master's in mental health counseling--leads to all sorts of comments about the relationship between this and making baskets) I have had a very busy four months and not even been able to make a basket since Christmas. School finished last night (until fall), work has settled down and there is a whole lot of new reed in the basement and several new patterns on the shelf. I intend to do nothing for the next few weeks but make baskets and cure myself of this severe case of withdrawal. I teach a 2 or3 classes a year and sell baskets through a couple of stores and at a couple of art and craft shows but really on a fairly small scale. I also do occasional demonstrations at a local pioneer village. I also repair antique baskets. I repaired a basket last year that someone found in the attic of the house they had just moved into. It had been initialed and the date included. The basket was over 200 years old. It really needed very little to repair and it was kind of a neat feeling repairing something that age . This also goes to show why we should sign and date our baskets. I am also married and the mother of a 13 year old. I've said enough. I need to go make baskets. bye Wanda Haydt @ @ @ @ @ @ @ @ @ @ @ @ @ @ @ @ @ @ @ @ @ @ @ @ @ @ @ @ Subject:Subscribe Date:Tue, 6 May 1997 19:52:01 -0700 From:"M. I got hooked on it when I took a class offered through a 4-H program, and then went on to take classes from a nice person named Twig Mathers. She has been the backbone to my basketmaking. She freely shares her wisdom and her knowledge with me and to her I am eternally grateful. I like David's mom have turned my dining room into a weavers paradise, (including raking the rug!!). I am a mother of four children and just recently quit my job to become a full time basketmaker, and I am soooooo happy!! I never realized just how many people were involved with basketmaking until I got on the internet. It's amazing. My husband is a very supportive soul and overlooks the large quantity of reed in my bedroom, (maybe he'll finally get that storage system under way if he trips over it enough)!! I am extremely excited to join your weavers words. It sounds so friendly compared to the experience I had with other lists. I hope to meet a lot of new people and look forward to reading and responding here. Last Christmas I ended up with so many basket orders to fill that every time someone called me and asked what I was doing I said weaving...madly, so I am known as The Mad Weaver. I hope everyone enjoys their weaving and corresponding as much as I.
