"Weavers Words" Vol. 1 Iss. 17 Compiled By David Collins Owned By Weavers Everywhere Date Sent: June 09, 1997 Subscribers: 181 @ @ @ @ @ @ @ @ @ @ @ @ @ @ @ @ @ @ @ @ @ @ @ @ @ @ @ @ Hi Friends, If you sent me something to be included in this issue and it doesn't appear, I apologize. I lost some mail over the weekend. If you resend your message and it will be in the next issue. If you know of someone who subscribed after June 1st, they probably need to resubscribe. My address book file got corrupted and I had to backup from my tape backup. Sorry :-(. I'm learning from my mistakes. Since I have had some subscribers inquire, here's a little bit of information about myself. I am a 26 year old guy from Indianapolis, IN. I have a degree in Mechanical Engineering from IUPUI (Indiana Univ.-Purdue Univ. at Indianapolis). Even though my degree reads Purdue University, I am an avid IU fan. My hobbies include watching anything sports related, computers, and pyrography (woodburning). I have a pyrography site at http://www.iei.net/~davidc/ if anyone would like to see some of my work. I also make webpages for a local company called ComputerTutor. My mom, Norma, has been weaving for about three years and the house hasn't looked the same since that infamous day. We are constantly having to rake the carpet. Oh well, she enjoys it and that is all that is important. Many of you have requested back issues. So I thought I would post all back issues at http://www.iei.net/~davidc/basketry.html . This will save you time. Simply click on the issue('s) that you need and then print. If you don't have internet access, no problem, I will still mail back issues as well as new issues. If you know of someone who has signed up for Weaver's Words and hasn't received an issue it's due to a miscommunication with their email address. I have had a few issues returned to sender. OOPS!!! Have them resend it and check their capitalization (ie davidc@iei.net isn't the same as DavidC@iei.net). Graduation is finished and now I*m concentrating on moving. If I just tell myself "one step at a time" I know I can get through this. Pam Woodbury--thanks for the tip on the tulip handle--I*ll put weaving one of those on the back burner for now. I*d like to hear more about that huge basket you saw at the antique festival--the body carrier. How old do you think it was? Was it mostly round reed or did it have any flat reed? I did find a neat purse pattern but just got the lid yesterday so I won*t be weaving it for a few weeks. It was from Willowe*s. They have a neat site with pattern pictures. If anyone can*t find it, I*ll look up the address and pass it on. I*m most impressed with their patterns and wooden parts. Lisha--what a scary story re: the woman who tripped over a tent stake and is suing! I agree with Pam....we need to discuss this and the solutions/alternatives immediately. My buying the $89 birdhouse seems pale by comparison. On the old "List", someone said they put their "non-sellers" in a large basket and put a sign saying "your choice $10" and they sold great. I tried that at the last fair and it did indeed work! I put mostly small gift type baskets in a potato basket (on an 18" hoop I wove years ago), placed the sign on the rim with clothespins, and voila! They sold rapidly! Whoever gave that tip, thanks a bunch! I belonged to Shirley's basket list and enjoy reading this one. I have a story to tell you about a lost and found and lost and found again purchase at IBA this year. I came to the IBA early Friday so that I would have time to shop before my first class. I couldn't get into my room before shopping or class, so I lugged my purchases from vendor to vendor, then to class. Unbeknownst to me, I lost two small bags. Sunday morning early I received a phone call from one of the attendees (I didn't catch her name....it was around 7:00 AM!) who told me she had them and would leave them at the registration desk: I assumed on her way to class. She had to use my charge slip from Royalwood to find my name and then my room registration to find me. When I checked, there was no bag left at the spot where the registration desk had been and I had to leave Indianapolis for home, Either I had misunderstood the woman on the phone or someone had picked up the bag before I got there. It was disappointing to have lost them again! On June 2, I found a message from Kathy Halter at Royalwood on my answering machine. The Hyatt had sent her my two little bags because of the charge slip! Kathy then looked up my name which was in their computer and made the call. She kindly sent my basket weaving treasures, which just proves again what nice people there are associated with basket weaving!! @ @ @ @ @ @ @ @ @ @ @ @ @ @ @ @ @ @ @ @ @ @ @ @ @ @ @ @ From: "Susan H. MacIntire" Subject: Using kitchen stuff for patterns & tools To: davidc@iei.net Hi all, It's overcast today. We're having "Shoreham Festival" -concerts, games on the common, a barbecue and a town wide garage sale. As a library trustee, I'm running the used book sale in front of the library. Sure hope it doesn't rain. I was going to bring a basket along to work on when things get slow, but think I will bring my spinning wheel, as it may attract more folks over to the books. (It's a large great [walking] wheel and can be seen from a distance better than a basket in progress on my lap.) In regard to the birch containers I make: I cut a piece of 1/2" thick pine into a shape for the base. For example, tracing a soup can on to a piece of wood makes a great size for a pencil holder. Then I cut a piece of birch bark big enough to go around the wood base and about 5 or 6 inches tall. I put the wood base up about 1/2" from the bottom of the bark piece, wrap the bark around the wood and tack it in place with small nails. Next I lace the overlap up the sides with cane, by making holes with my awl. Sometimes I make x's up the side, sometimes v's or other designs. That holds the container nicely together. To trim it I make awl holes about every 3/8" around the top and down 1/4" from the edge. I lace a border of pine needles or sweet grass along the top. To finish it, I make matching holes with my awl about 3/8 of an inch up from the bottom of the birch. That way I have enough room to lace it under the wood base. Then I put a matching border of pine needles around the bottom and lace it on. Ovals make nice containers too. Sometimes I cut a 5 x 7" oval base, only use a 3" high strip of birch bark to go around it and then also make a handle out of birch to go over the top. If you cut a piece 1" wide you can attach it with an x of cane on each side and trim the edges with matching sweetgrass or pine needles. Put a few dried flowers or bittersweet in them in the fall and they sell like hotcakes. It really doesn't take too long to make one either! Jack, you mentioned steaming the oak after you soaked it. What works better - I haven't cracked a handle since I started doing it - is nuking the handle for 20 or 25 seconds on high in the microwave. It comes out warm to the touch and bends beautifully. I have the biggest microwave I could find. I can nuke all but the really big handles in it. I use my microwave more for craft stuff than food. Yesterday I painted some bats of carded white wool with food coloring & vinegar & wrapped them in plastic wrap. Then I steamed them for 15 minutes in the microwave, and voila - rainbow dyed bats. Great for spinning before a crowd and will end up being crazy colored socks to stuff in my granddaughters' Christmas stockings. The other kitchen item I use for basketry is a hand crank pasta machine. It cuts split black/brown ash beautifully. The angel hair or vermicelli cutters work good for miniature baskets. I also have an assortment of larger size cutters. You just feed the splint in dry and nice even strips come out the other end. Well, I'd better get up to the library. The sale starts at 10:00 a.m. Have a good weekend, Sue in Shoreham, VT @ @ @ @ @ @ @ @ @ @ @ @ @ @ @ @ @ @ @ @ @ @ @ @ @ @ @ @ From: "Joy Moody" Subject: rolling cart To: Hi everyone. Have found time to weave in my new "studio" i.e. the garage. At least I can hear the birds, goldfinches and cardinals and purple house finches. They lift my spirits. I also like Celtic and Kind-of folksy Dulcimer music. In Issue 15 of Weavers Words "Berg" asked about what to use for peach. I have gotten good results with "Basketry Dye - Apricot #73394" This used to be J.A.D.V.I.C.K. apricot. It comes in a small plastic round pot with a snap on lid. I know Restoration Products carries this and can be accessed on their web page. So much good information provided by so many knowledgeable, generous friends, thanks to your dedication and generous sharing of your time, knowledge, and resources. Am looking for basketweavers and basketweaving instructor(s) in the vicinity of Jonesboro (southside of Atlanta), GA, for a dear friend who's just learned the joy and satisfaction of weaving. She's been trying in vain to locate teaching/weaving persons in her area. There must be some who just haven't "surfaced" yet. Can you help? ... Any of you out there, I would so much appreciate your emailing me your snailmail address (and phone number, if you don't mind), so that I may have my friend contact you. She's a fun person; we've been good friends since 3rd grade (and our 60th! high school reunion is coming up next year.) ...Look forward to your response. Thanks.
