We have noticed some conversation regarding 'torching stained baskets'. We are not sure what type of stain you are using or the exact technique. We are the makers of "Weaver's Stain" and your SAFETY is our main concern. Under NO circumstances do we recommend that you torch a stained basket, especially if it is still wet/damp. If you use the torch technique, we recommend that you do this BEFORE you use any type of stain, not just our product. ALL stains are highly flammable while wet. Also stain soaked rags and brushes are also highly flammable. Our product is totally non-toxic once it is completely dry (usually 24 hrs), however, we have never tested flammability once dry. Which we will do shortly due to this new interest. When you torch your UNSTAINED basket, be sure that you are dipping or spraying it with WATER. Keep your basket WET during the process. If you accidentally get too close and singe your basket you can always sand it with a sanding disk, etc... Let basket cool down, dry and THEN stain your basket. We never recommend a procedure unless we ourselves have tested it and know it is safe. We also advise that you need to beware of stain products that have, what we call a paint base/acrylic base. You can identify some of these products by a chemical that they use called "toluene". These products are not only highly flammable but are known to the state of California to cause cancer and birth defects or other reproductive harm. So PLEASE be careful. We have done extensive research and testing to make sure our product is environmentally safe and weaver friendly. Should you have any questions regarding any type of stain that you use, please don't hesitate to email us or call. If we don't know the answer we will try to find out for you. Melissa at East Troy Basketry is very knowledgeable. We recommend if you want to use her technique, ask her for specifics. 1. Type of stain used. 2. Make sure basket has dried completely. 3. Ask her if she dips her basket in water before torching. 4. Etc........... One mistake or missing step could be disastrous. My husband and I both weave, and have always been curious about the torching technique. But never gutsy enough to try it (well Mark did try it once on a dry unstained basket, but we won't go there for now). To Melissa: please give us specifics, we would like to try this ourselves. Happy Weaving (and torching)!!!!! Two quick reminders If doing this at the end of a class -- WATCH out for others around you. I came VERY close to shortening a gal's hair. She had nearly waist length hair and came round a chair and turned her back to me rather quickly for some reason. Startled, I looked up and brought the torch away from the basket (save the basket first you know). Close call. Secondly-- Beware your fingers inside the basket. I have occasionally given them a mild scorch. Also, although I don't normally risk torching the inside of a basket to completely, it is wise to mist both the inside and outside. If you have over-misted a spot on the outside and linger to get the hairs, if the inside is not damp, it also can scorch. Now dye can cover a variety of scorches, so long as the weaver isn't weakened. I've tried it using one of those butane grill lighters. Seems to work well, but it still makes me a little nervous :) Guess I'll get more comfortable with it the more I do it. I find it's easier to clip the thicker longer hairs and let the flame take all the thin wispy ones. I do have another question on the same subject: I've noticed that I get little black 'dots' when some of the thicker hairs burn off. Seems I still need to clip those off when all is said and done. Is there an easier way? Thanks again :) Betsy Clark: I've tried several times to get to your website with no luck at all. I've even tried going the long way by going to the always online homepage and clicking through to your page - I keep getting error messages. I'm very interested in your book and would like to take a peek at your page. Please let me know when the kinks are worked out :) Also, where in Maine are you from? I too am originally from Maine - Kittery. Chris Baker: I checked out your pattern - it looks much better now. I was confused the first time I looked at it as the reed size was listed as 'x' and 'z'. Glad to see that you got the problem fixed. I hope everyone is enjoying a wonderful spring! We've had some gorgeous weather here in Southern New Jersey. A great time for weaving outside :-) Happy weaving Diana {*}-{*}{*}-{*}{*}-{*}{*}-{*}{*}-{*}{*}-{*}{*}-{*}{*}-{*}{*}-{*}{*}-{*} Subject: selling Date: Fri, 17 Apr 1998 07:25:23 -0700 From: "Amanda\"Mandy\"Popelka" Reply-To: To: "Weavers Words" Hi everyone! Hope you are all enjoying spring. I am going to do my first home show in a couple weeks so have been really busy weaving. It is bad when your husband comes home and notices the beds aren't made and the house needs straightened and he can figure out I have been weaving all day. Thank god he is supportive in me doing this. Burning Baskets-I noticed talk on burning baskets and since I am the one who just about burnt my whole kitchen down in doing this thought I would give a little advice. NEVER burn baskets that are already stained. This is the mistake I made and you my as dip your basket in gasoline and then light it. It took 2 seconds for me to have a blaze to the ceiling and curtains on fire. I still burn baskets but make sure they are very very wet and go outside and use my electric start blow torch. Make sure you do it in an area that if it does catch on fire you can throw the basket without catching anything else on fire. I make sure I am in the middle of my lawn now. Patterns-I saw someone ask this once but never heard a response. For all of you who make patterns and sell them. How do you feel about someone buying your patterns and making and selling those baskets? I have moved the patterns & other items to another page to keep my home page from loading too slowly. Just click on the link to go the the page with them. Also, I think all of us with web sites should start a web ring. There are rings for just about everything else. I think basket makers should have one. I have 2 examples of other rings on my page for those of you who don't know how they work. I would be willing to look into it if enough people are interested. I realized that I enjoy this forum and look forward to each new issue, but I also felt guilty since I have not contributed lately. David, a heartful thank you for having a sense of humor - how else could you deal with us on a continuing basis! I really hope it keeps continuing. I had read one note that someone was looking for an inexpensive source for liners, something like that "L" company sells. I would also like to find a source if anyone knows of one, but I am looking for a tall glass-like liner to put in a "quiver" type basket to line it for a small vase. I have been using old Tupperware tumblers, but I am running out of these fast. Also, anyone who is going to the Outer Banks of North Carolina this summer should check out a shop in Kitty Hawk called Crafters Gallery they have a great selection and I thought the prices were more than reasonable. The shop is right on Rt. 158 Bypass at Milepost 4.5 They also have a basketmaker there who had a lot of different uses for her baskets. There is also the Farmer's Daughter farther down Rt. 158 I think it was in Nags Head. They also had neat stuff, but I thought they were more expensive. Pam Woodbury - I was wondering if you had decided what to do with your cypress knee. I have always wanted one because I have seen them painted into Santas in a lot of catalogs and they are very expensive. The painters seem to let the wood determine the shape and expression of the Santa, so they are all different. I would love to know what you come up with. I thought it was so funny that your family thought you had "lost it" when you saved it. My family has given me that look many times. I always tell them they need to see the possibilities! Can anyone explain what a "tapestry" basket is? I have seen the notes going back and forth and my curiosity is killing me. Well, that's all for now from cloudy, cool(?) and generally crummy weather in central Massachusetts, Beverly {*}-{*}{*}-{*}{*}-{*}{*}-{*}{*}-{*}{*}-{*}{*}-{*}{*}-{*}{*}-{*}{*}-{*} Subject: Re: "Weavers Words" V. 1 I. 107 Date: Mon, 20 Apr 1998 18:14:51 EDT From: froggestow@juno.com (Roberta R Comstock) To: davidc@iei.net References: 1 "Weavers Words" Vol. 1 Iss. 107 Lora L Khoury - That's a good tip about binding the ends of your sea grass before dyeing it.
