Coptic = Egyptian
yes, Coptic & Egyptian mean exactly the same thing ( synonyms) .
the Greeks gave the name : " Aiguptos " to Egypt .
why ? let me tell you.
at a certain time before Alexander the Great, probably the 9th century BC,
when the Greek civilization began to flourish,
Egypt was a great country , much more civilized than the Greeks. at that time
Hut-ka-Ptah, was the name of the famous temple of the god Ptah , at "Memphis" the famous Egyptian city,
(literally the "house of the ka/spirit of Ptah").
This name was borrowed by the Greeks at that time , but they've pronounced it differently, as a matter of fact.
It occurred in Mycenaean Greek as "a-ku-pi-ti-yo", later Classical Greek aiguptos. In Akkadian cuneiform documents it occurred as xi-ku-up-ta-ax (Khi-ku-ptakh) and later it was used instead of, or as the name of " Memphis ".
As most of the times , when you hear the name of big cities or capitals , you immediately
remember the country itself , so the Greeks gave the name of the most important city which was
known by the name of its famous temple now " aiguptos " , to the whole country.
This indicates that the name of the temple was being used for the name of the city
and later for the name of the country.
(The /t/ on the end of Hut fell off in pronunciation, much like the ta-marbutah of Arabic.)
================================================
when the Arabs came to Egypt the heard that name also
Aiguptoc , as the Greek language , at that time , was the international cultural language
& was known allover the Mediterranean countries & the old world, as English now .
the Arabs don't have the suffix : " os " , also they don't have the hard letter : G , as in the word
" Good " in English,
they only have the soft letter : G , the same as soft letter " G ", in English
as in the word : "gentle" , for example.
so the closest pronunciation of the that letter to their tongue is : " K " or " Q " which
corresponds to the letter "Quaf " in Arabic.
so , by omitting the prefix : "Ai "
and the suffix " os " , & pronouncing the hard " G " as " Q ",
it became : qypt , or kypt , which has been further modified to" kopt " (Copte )
by the European tongue ( like : Italian , French , English , etc ........) .
So, Coptic = Egyptian , it's easy you know ? !
