Wooden Folklore Angel In Country Canadian gardens folklore can often be seen, especially in Tilly. Many of the craftsmen make these out of old wood, pieces of wood and anything that can be found. This angel is a replica of this craft. In my PSP painting I used old square nails, two spindles for arms and a few pieces of shaped wood to create this. Hope you enjoy this tutorial. The Finished Portrait By The Tilly Garden
This Tutorial Teaches: This tutorial teaches some vector shaping and how to make and paint wood. It also teaches the freehand tool.
Materials Required: This tutorial only requires your PSP program and of course, your time. This tutorial can be done with either level 6 or 7. I choose to work with PSP6 because I find it a challenge converting tutorials from level 7 to 6. Lets Begin: Open your psp program. Open a new image transparent background 250W x 300L. Add a new layer. Using your preset shapes, ellipse, filled, solid colour, and setting your stroke colour which is your foreground colour to white, draw a circle starting at 120 pixels across and 80 pixels going down, ending at 152, 111. **Note, for those of you who have PSP7, set your pattern before creating your vector shapes throughout this tutorial.** Now click on your layer palette, then right click on this layer and change it to a rastor layer.
Using your selection tool, rectangle, feather 0, antialiased checked, draw a square around the circle. Then click inside the circle.
Go to your scuplture effect. Choose 13, which is a dark rough wood. Using the following settings, apply. Now this wood is way too dark for our image so we are going to lighten it. Go to colours, brightness and contrast. Set brightness at 38, contrast at 21. Apply twice. Now go to colour, colourize set hue to 19 and contrast to 75. Apply.
Set your foreground or stroke colour to #F3ecdf. Which is a cream colour. Select your paint brush tool, change the settings to solid colour, pen brush, size 44, hardness 50, opacity 100, step 25 and density 100 then click on the second tab and change the pattern to a woodgrain. Preferably one that has lines going up and down. Make several strokes on the circle. Your graphic should look similar to this.
Add a new layer. Go to cutout. Change the shadow colour to #685C4A. Using opacity 70, blur 28.5, vert and horizontal -6, and fill interior unselected, apply a cutout.
Add a new layer. Change your stroke or foreground colour to white. Using the paintbrush size 16, add a highlight to the left top portion. Then gaussian blur this at 2.00.
Add another new layer and using a pink, add some blush for the cheeks using the same effect as the highlight, the gaussian blur this. Select none.
Now using your selection tool without changing the settings, draw a narrow rectangle for the nose, add a new layer. Go to your cutout, change the following blur down to 4, and the vert and horizontal to -2, without changing any of the other settings, apply. Select none. Merge visable then change this layer name to head.
Now for the hair, change your stroke or foreground colour to #808080. Using your preset shape, changing the ellipse to rectangle, and using vector and antialised draw a rectangle starting at 112,30 ending at 119, 59. Holding your control button down, click on the left bottom node and move it in slightly. Right click on your layer palette on this layer and change it to a rastor layer. Then using your deformations tool, make it a little bit narrower and slightly shorter. Then take your draw tool, straight line, size 3, stroked, antialised checked, create as vector unchecked, draw a line at the top making it even on both sides of the grey vector line you just created. If it isn't even, take your eraser tool, making certain pattern is set to none, delete what little is larger on either side.
Using your selection tool draw a square around it, then click on the nail selecting it. Go to image, effects, inner bevel and apply the presetting soft edge. Change your stroke colour to black, using your airbrush tool, with these settings, shape round, size 35, hardness 10, opacity 36, step 7, density 12, spray a little of the black on the nail. Then go to chrome and apply. Select none. Move your head layer on your layer palette, above the nail. Center the nail with your mover tool lining it with the nose. Go to your layer palette and duplicate. Then rotate only this layer 20 degrees to the right and move it as following..
Now duplicate this layer and rotate it 20 degrees to the right and then move it spacing it equally from the second nail. Turn off the head layer, then layer 2, which should be the first nail. Merge the other two nails, then duplicate this layer and then mirror it. Then move it matching it to the original two. Then once your satisfied, merge all of it visable. The head is pretty much complete. Remember to save your psp graphic often.
Now for the body...
Go to your preset shape tool and select the triangle. Change your stroke colour to white. Using triangle, filled, antialised and vector checked, draw a triangle starting at 80, 108 and drawing out to 173, 260. Move your triangle over until the top tip is lined with the nose. Go to your vector edit selection tool and click on node edit. Click on the node at the top tip right click and change it to symmetric. Then move the arms of the arrow out making the tip rounded. Then holding the control key add a node in the center of the bottom line. Change it to symmetric. Then move the arms of the arrow out rounding the bottom. Move the other two side nodes out slightly. You may need to round out the bottom again moving the new nodes arms again. You should have something similar to the following.
Right click on layer one and change it to a rastor layer and name it body. Using your selection tool and drawing a square around and clicking on the image select the body. Now we are going to do the same to the body as the head. Using sculpture, pattern 13 apply. Then go to brightness contrast and apply twice. Go to colour, colourize it and apply. Your stroke colour should be white. Using your paint tool again, paper texture, woodgrain, and using size 65, add a new layer and paint the white grain. Now using your eraser size 25, hardness 100, opacity 100, step 16 and density 100, erase little areas, only a few randomly making some of the background show through. Add a new layer and apply the cutout using opacity of 70, blur of 28.5, vert and horizontal -6. Then apply a second layer and cutout changing the vert and horizontal to 4.
Now using the paint brush size 20, paper texture none, add a highlight around the top and to the left slightly. As following..
Then go to image blur, gaussian blur of 3.45. Then reduce the opacity on the layer palette to 72. Turn off the head layer and merge the rest visable rename it body. Take the retouch tool and soften the bottom slightly. Then go to the layer palette and move the head layer above the body layer.
Now for the wings..
Go to your preset shapes tool change the setting to ellipse, all other settings remain the same, making sure your stroke colour is white draw an ellipse starting at 21,123 ending at 105, 169. Go to your layer palette and change the layer to rastor. Using your selection tool rectangle, same settings, draw a rectangle and select the wing. Image effect, sculpture same as the other body pieces, brightness contrast, apply twice. Colour, colourize same setting. Go to your paint brush, same settings, except change paper texture to a woodgrain that goes horizontal. Paint lines leaving a few spots empty. Select none. Take your freehand tool, set to freehand feather = 1, antialised checked. Draw on the left end of the wing a cutout similar to the following.
Then hit your delete key once your satisfied. You may have to try this a few times until your happy. It doesn't have to be perfect. Thats the nice part about coutry graphics. Select none. Then add a drop shadow using colour #675C4B. Opacity 100, blur 0, vert and horizontal -2.
Now duplicate this layer and mirror it. Align it even with the first wing. In your layer palette, right click on your wings and name them left wing and right wing. Move the body layer above these two layers.
Now for the arms...
Take your preset shapes tool change the shape to rectangle, all other settings the same. Draw a rectangle, starting at 80, 117 and ending at 95, 224. Convert this layer to rastor. Then change your preset shape to ellipse and draw an oval starting at 99, 125 and ending at 75, 153. Convert this layer to rastor. Duplicate this layer. Move the ovals to places equally spaced on the rectangle. The following is what you should have.
Now turn off the head, background and wings layers. Then merge these other layers together and name it arm.
Draw a rectangle using your selection tool, then click in the center selecting the arm. Now we are going to apply the same settings as all the other body pieces. Image effects sculpture, same settings apply. Brightness contrast apply twice. Colour, coulorize apply. Then paint brush and stroke on white leaving a few spaces darker.
New rastor layer, then cutout effect, opacity 70, blur, vert and horizontal 4. Select none. Now your other body pieces should still be invisable or turned off. Merge visable.
Turn on all the layers. Make sure your arm is the top layer. Add a drop shadow to the arm. Change the colour in your drop shadow to black. Turn the opacity to 48, blur 4.9, vert and horizontal to 2. Apply.
Image rotate this 20 degrees to the right. Move the arm in place similar to the following. Then using the deformation tool make it slightly shorter and narrower.
Duplicate this layer, rename the layers right and left arm accordingly.
Now for the accents...
Click on the head layer, using the freehand selection tool, feather 0 antialised checked draw around a nail. Preferable one on the left side of the angels head. Then edit copy this. Select none. Then edit paste as a new layer. Then move it to the top of the left arm. Move this layer below the arm layer and call it leftnail. Duplicate and mirror this layer and position it opposite the first nail and over the right arm.
Now for the sign..
Go to your preset shapes tool, rectangle, draw a rectangle the width of her dress and no more than half an inch long. Move the layer to the top. Now holding the shift key move the top right node to the right slightly angling the side, then move the bottom left node to the left, angling this side. Convert it to rastor and apply the same as the other pieces. Effects sculpture, brightness and contrast twice, colour colourize. Then paint on the white. Add a new layer, Image effect cutout, change the colour of your cutout to white, apply. Select none, then add a drop shadow. Colour black, opacity 100, blur 0, vert 1, horizontal 2. Go to the top layer, add a new rastor layer.
Change your stroke or foreground colour to black. Now using your draw tool, freehand, size 1, stroked, solid line, draw a line similar to the following over the end of the arm and onto the sign.
Then using your eraser tool, size 5, no pattern, erase just a small amount on the side of the arm and on the side of the sign of the wire. Now duplicate this layer and position over the right arm. Move it over if you have to.
Then add a saying to your sign using your text tool. I chose black and created my saying as a vector. Then I duplicated my saying once I had deformed it to the size I wanted.
Now using your freehand tool add some eyelids. Then decorate it to your liking. I added a staron one and a heart on the other. Once you have it to the way you like it, merge all the layers visable. Change your foreground or stroke colour to a dark brown, I used #6A5B3A. Then select all, then select float. Using your airbrush tool, size 35, hardness 10, opacity 36, step 7, density 12, add some dirt lightly and randomly. I got the idea for the dirt from Gina, another good Canadian friend who has some excellent Country tutorials, check her site too!
Now save as a tube..or add a country background!
