Benjamin Britten: Midsummers Night, Overture B

So I sow dragon teeth
in the nostrils of power,
gain from its cold breath
my winter buds,
where in later heat,

love bursts into flowers,
desire bursts into stars,
wishes burst into sunlight,
loves burst into lives.

What he really wanted to do was fly. And the white magic helped by the angels let him grow wings in an instant, and he did so often, growing different wings for different days and different winds. But then there grew in him the wish to fly not only on earth but in space, among stars.


Finally, one day, with the magic that was real magic, he made his mind become like a star, and he traveled the universe with brilliance. But he found he had an enemy, as great as his feat of magic, which is the way of all magic. Just as in the Beginning, when a devil was made with every division of people into sexes, so also a devil is made with every act of magic and of good, no matter how good. So that even things that seem good always have a bad side to them somewhere. So devils will always be here. It's just the way the universe is.
