Cleaning an object from a photograph seems to be one of the most tedious parts of object creation, as well as the most important! I mainly use graphics to create objects as I personally lack the creative skills to create from scratch. In this tutorial I will show you some of the tricks I use with Paintshop Pro to make sure that my object is top notch before adding it to the game.
Transparency
I always work on a transparent background. When you copy and paste as a new image, make sure your new background is transparent. If you have a solid color showing up when you paste, I open a NEW image, note the size and select "transparent". I then highlight the new image and paste the copy as a NEW SELECTION.  Always "unselect" once you have the object centered.
You can easily change the transparent background. I will change my background many times as I work around an object to make different areas easier to see. Below is an example of a tree I was making. You can see how changing the transparency colors makes editing a breeze!
Above shows a light transparent Background.
After switching to a darker transparent background you can see the areas of white that need to be edited out.
To change the transparency go to FILE. PREFERENCES, and then
GENERAL PROGRAM PREFERENCES. Click the TRANSPARENCY
tab. A window will open with all of your transparency options. I like to
use a TINY grid size and change the GRID COLORS accordingly.
You can also select a solid background but if I don't see the checkerboard I continually question the transparency. So I leave the
little squares.

Next we will move on to "Anti-Alias".
