44.Rusted cranks and motions of the almost completely disintegrated YP 'preserved' (ha!) at the Mysore Rail Museum. This picture was
shot in 2001. I'd already posted enough pics of this unfortunate beast in my Mysore museum
website, which is why I did not post this picture before. At any rate, the bright and
fuzzy patch in the foreground hurts the eye and is a big distraction: another reason for
rejection. |
|
45.One of my rare hauls is this
picture of an ASEA-built WAG/6A being unloaded
from a ship at the Netaji Subhash Docks in Calcutta. This picture appeared in the Indian Railways magazine in 1988. |
|
46.For nearly two decades I have
held on to this picture wondering what to do with it. This is a WAM/4 electric hauling a Rajdhani Express somewhere on the IR. This picture appeared on the cover of the Indian Railways
Yearbook in 1987. Sorry about the distracting white patch: the IR somehow seems to
specialize in printing pictures in odd angles and shapes in all of its publications. |
|
47.A WCG/2 speeds through a fog bank as she passes Shivajinagar station with
the Pragati Express to Bombay. Two reasons for
rejection of this picture: I've put up far too many shots of trains from this same spot.
Any any rate, I was a little pissed off, as looking at the fog, I'd hoped to capture the
locomotive cutting through the fog with a bright headlight beam. No such luck.
Incidentally, I am standing at a level crossing, so there is no fog at this particular
fog. Behind me is an even thicker blanket of fog. This picture was shot in Nov. 1997. |
48.Another one of my early
pirating efforts! No, actually, I was only trying to polish my photography technique. This
is a picture of a WP leaving Bhopal in 1984 with
a Delhi bound express. This picture was shot
from a book with my Olympus compact, allowing for parallax error. No, don't compliment me
for the photograph: its not mine. Whooops! I think I have posted this before,on my WP
Glory site. |
|
49.A WDM/2 runs into Pune with a heavy freight comprising of BCX box cars. This is shot in 1982 at the Mundhwa level crossing at Pune:
I used to work in a company nearabouts, and one of the bonuses was a 1 km stretch of
approach road right next to the rail line. This picture was made with a borrowed 110
format Fujica camera, and I'd rejected this earlier due to a burred print on account of
the 110 film format. I couldn't believe that Minolta actually made an SLR with
interchangeable lenses that used to take 110 film! |
|
50.The assistant driver is amused at the sight of me shooting his train. Same location, same train as above. Too bad about the 110
film and the graininess of the print. |
|
51.A lone WG steam shunts at Daund in 1992.My brother and I journeyed all the way to Daund merely to capture the ZE
ng steamers of the Daund-Baramati line, and were rather pissed off when the train came in
diesel worked. In disgust we downed a quick lunch at Daund and awaited the departure of
our train back to Pune, when lo behold! this beauty hissed past. A totally unexpected
bonus, as the steam shed at Daund was supposed to have closed five years ago! Needless to
mention I went quite overboard, and took at least eleven shots, plus filmed the sweet
music of steam in action. |
|
|
52.Its a rare occasion that you
can actually shoot the driver at work while you travel by that train. The driver of NDM/1 # 505 keeps a sharp lookout on the track
ahead as he advances his train uphill from Neral
to Matheran. This picture was shot in 1992 by my brother, with his trusty Canon AE1 SLR. |
|
53.An awful photograph, but of
some value to me as I've lost the original print and negative: this is a photocopy. I thought I'd captured an elusive WAG/2 at last when my
brother shot for me this picture of the beast at Bhusaval in 1981.The jay-walkers walked into the camera's range just as the
trigger was being pressed. I rejected this picture outright due to the jay walkers fouling
the locomotive's facade. The picture is originally blurred due to the 110 format, and
worse still due to this being a photocopy. I cannot remember how I came to photocopy it:
prophecy, perhaps!! |
|
54.I know, you have seen this
one before on my diesel fiesta site. This is a
YDM/4 hauled Vaigai Express as it crosses the Cauvery River just before entering
Tiruchhirapalli. This picture is made from atop
the Rock Fort. I have posted this again as the image has been duly sharpened: the one on
my other site is rather blurred. This picture is a gift from my friend. (Photo courtesy: R.Sridhar). |
|
55.A WAP/4 about to leave Madras Central in July 2000 with the Lalbaug
Express to Bangalore. I have posted a similar
shot on my millenium site, but rejected this one, although this is a clearer view, because
the engine's class WAP/4 has been hidden by a shadow on the buffer beam, due to which she
could have well been mistaken for an identical looking WAP/1. |
56.Set amongst a foreground of assorted railroad scrap is this view of Khar
Road satellite shed, with a side view of a dual
current WCAM/1 electric. This picture was made in 1982 with a zoom-less plastic lens
camera. I somehow missed out this picture altogether. |
|
57.A WCG/2 rests easy at Lonavla.
This picture was shot by my friend Venu from his train in 1996, using a zoom-less Nikon
compact. The freight WCG/2s had just begun appearing in this livery that was hitherto
reserved only for WCMs. The WCG/2s used to sport a full navy livery with a yellow ribbon
running all round. |
|
58.A WG steam engine with a short train of flats at Akkalkot on the
Bombay-Madras line. I made this picture in 1986:
my train (Bombay_Madras Mail) was just pulling into Akalkot and I jumped up in glee as I thought my car had
stopped right next to this beauty. Sadly, no. Nonetheless, it did help me get this shot: an angle
I'd not explored before. I used an Agfa 200 mechanical camera: too bad about the lousy
color rendition, which was due to manual processing, about which I'd mentioned earlier. |
|
59.For long my favorite picture of a WCP/2: this appeared in the 'Swagat' inflight magazine of Indian Airlines in
1987, and shows SIR ROGER LUMLEY at the National Rail Museum, New Delhi.. Apart from
complementing the father in my mind about introducing his son to the joys of railfanning,
I also liked the original GIP livery applied to the engine, which is a total contrast to
the playground livery that appears today. |
|
|
60.A WCM/1 prepares to leave Pune (Poona) in 1992 with the Deccan Queen to
Bombay. I had rejected this shot earlier as it
was a far shot: I'd posted a much nearer one on my dc mania site. Nontheless, although not
much of a photograph, it still serves as another document to record the existance of the
magnificent WCM/1s, which are now sadly gone. |
|
61.A lone WDM/2 in typical Gooty light blue/orange livery awaits the call of
duty at Daund in 1996. This picture was shot by
my friend Venu from his train, using a zoom-less Nikon compact. I'd rejected this shot
earlier due to the large, empty foreground which only distracts, more so due to the bright
color. Looking at the picture now, thousands of miles away, here in Dubai, I now actually
like it, for it tells it like it is. |
|
62.This was probably the
clearest picture I'd taken amongst others of a
new WDP/2 diesel unit at Madras Egmore in July 2000. However I'd rejected the picture outright on account of the distracting
billboard (hoarding) in the background: I was so thrilled at being unexpectedly able to
shoot this beast at such close quarters that I missed noticing the 'free 30%' sign in the
background altogether. Another reason for rejection was that the line behind the engine
appears to end abruptly after the engine. It actually curves sharply to the right. |
63.Sent to me by my sister in
Bangalore, this picture shows a very crude
tri-level transportation profile at Calcutta: whoops, Kolkatta. This picture was shot in 1992 at the mega-rail expo at Bangalore. This
exhibition reached Poona two weeks after I returned to Dubai after a two month long
holiday, and then moved to Bangalore a few weeks later. |
|
64.A close up of the CBC coupling.
Unfortunately, the picture itself came out a tad hocus-focus (bane of autofocus), plus
I've enlarged it manifold, due to which it has distorted a great deal. Sorry about that:
this pic was made in 1995. |
|
65.For long a favorite publicity poster of the Central Railway, this picture
shows a WCM/2 with the prestigious Deccan Queen, just outside the Parsik Tunnel. This picture was displayed for a while in the indoor
galleries of the NRM as well. I've lost the original print along with my scrap book: but
fortunately had photocopied it to put into another scrapbook. This is a scan of that
photocopy. Period: 1981. |
|
66.One of the first electric trams in Calcutta (Kolkatta) (circa 1907) is preserved at the Nehru Science Centre, Bombay. This
picture, taken in 1992 is one of that tram. The Nehru Centre also has a horse drawn tram
preserved alongside, but I have not scanned that image, though I did photograph it. Note
the absence of trolley pole (tram equivalent of pantograph) on this unit. |
|
|
67.A hand-hauled fire trolley at Lonavla station in 1992. These units were fitted with a rudimentary hand pump, and
were British built. Many bore the GIP cast-iron plate. They were used for putting out
minor platform fires. These trolleys were a common sight on several stations on the CR
till the mid 1990s. All of them have now been withdrawn, and two of them have been
preserved at the National Rail Museum, New Delhi. |
|
68. An FMA class 0-6-0 ex Southern Mahratta Railway, preserved at the
Visweswaraya Industrial Museum in Bangalore.
I've received a shot of this engine from my brother in 1987, but this one is shot by me in
1994. An identical engine in maroon livery is perserved at the National Rail Museum in New
Delhi. |
|
69.A 'F' class steam locomotive, ex Barsi Light Railway (Kurduwadi -Latur)
preserved outside the Indian Railways Institute of Civil Engineering at Pune.I'd shot this as a slide in 1997. The line, long diesel
worked, is now being ragauged to bg. (2001). |
|
70.You have seen and enjoyed my
earlier picture of the Vaigai entering
Tiruchirappalli. Here is a more head-on view of
the same train: I'd not included this picture earlier as I felt the side view was more
dramatic and gave a better idea of distance. Well, now here is the other picture: you
judge for yourself which one you prefer. (Picture
couresy: R.Sridhar). |
71.An MLR class steam engine preserved atop the hill at Matheran station. I'd shot this picture in 1992. One more unit is
preserved at the National Rail Museum, Delhi, while yet another unit has been shipped to
the Leighton Buzzard Railway in the UK. |
|
72.A modified second class car of the Nilgiri Mountain Railway. Some of the older wooden-bodied cars have been rebuilt in
this style. This picture was sent to me by my sister in 1992, and was on display at the
mega rail expo in Bangalore. |
|
73.A PL class steam locomotive (ex Parlakhimedi Railway in Orissa), preserved
outside Bangalore City station. This picture was
sent to me by Sundar Krishnamurthy for my collection. The engine appears rather
unexpectedly as you climb up to ground level from the pedestrian subway. Its almost
impossible to photograph the engine from any angle, as there are too many obstructions.
That probably also explains this shot with the light rays et al. To picture it from the
road, you have to take a pretty long detour. I did not attempt to photograph it as I
thought I had this picture already. (Photo
courtesy: Sundar Krishnamurthy). |
|
74.Head-on view of a WCM/3 electric, shunting at Lonavla in 1992. I had not included this picture before as I've alrady
posted two other pictures of this locomotive on two of my other sites. |
|
|
75.A dimunitiveYDM/2 diesel prepares to leave Kumbakonam station in 1997 with the Tiruchhirapalli - Tanjore passenger. Note the
striking resemblance of the engine to a ng ZDM/5 diesel. I have posted several pictures of
this locomotive before, so I'd rejected this picture earlier as this was one too many! |
|
76.A conventional WDM/2 and a Jumbo await the call of duty at Pune (Poona) in
1992. Again, I'd not posted this picture before
as it was one too many. I had gone overboard in 1992: my first trip to India after two
long years of no trains, due to which I had taken too many pictures of each. |
|
77.A diminitive YDM/2 prepares to leave Secunderabad with the local to
Bodhan. This picture was shot by my friend Venu
in 1996. The man in the foreground is his friend, whom he planted as a decoy, in an attempt
to look inobtrusive. He got caught despite this, as he lingered for too long at the spot.
Again, I'd not posted this image earlier as it was one too many. |
