What is the senior project?

The senior project program is a career focus performance assessment and requirement for all 12th graders with these four components:

· A research paper on a career of the student's choice

· A portfolio

· A product related to the paper

· A presentation to a panel comprised of community members and school staff

This program is implemented in John A. Holmes High School English classes. Faculty and community members advise and direct students, and students are assessed on each component using a common rubric. The program is demanding because of the commitment and rigor that is required of students to satisfactorily complete a long-term assignment.

Why do the senior project?

There are a variety of benefits for students, faculties, and communities when senior project is implemented in high schools.

· This initiative encourages collaboration and cohesiveness within high shool faculties and provides a forum for students to present their best work.

· As a result of our students participating in Senior Project, many educators have raised their expectations and standards.

· By analyzing senior projects, educators have revised their school programs to more adequately prepare students for the future using JobReady Grade Level Benchmarks.

· Some of the educators associated with senior project have become professionally revitalized-motivated to make sweeping changes within their schools or to speak at conferences about their experiences.

· Students participating in senior project have acquired new skills, greater self-confidence, and more focused career plans. Some students have been offered scholarships or jobs.

· Unmotivated students have become high achievers during the process.

· Community members have rallied around the senior project concept, volunteering their time and support, and publicizing the program to a wider audience.

SENIOR PROJECT JOB SHADOW EVALUATION FORM

John A. Holmes High School

600 Woodard Street

Edenton, NC 27932

To our Resource Volunteer:

Thank you for granting one of our students a job shadow experience. The time, place, and approximate length of the experience should have been arranged with you prior to today.

Our senior project requires all students to continue their traditional research of a career choice by actually interviewing and job shadowing an adult expert in the field. Since knowledge gained from each of these experiences becomes a primary source in their research projects, the students will request your permission to use their notes in their projects. Please let us know if you do not feel comfortable giving the student this permission.

We would also find it very helpful if you could spend a few minutes after the job shadow experience today, to respond to the questions below. You may either give this completed evaluation to the student or send it to me at the school address. Your evaluation will become an important part of the student's grade.

Thank you again for taking time to share your expertise with our students. School and community working together benefits everyone.

SENIOR PROJECT PARENT CONSENT FORM

JOHN A. HOLMES HIGH SCHOOL

EDENTON, NC 27932

I am aware that my son/daughter must successfully complete the Senior Project as a part of the requirements for English IV or Advanced Placement English.

I understand that there are four parts of the project: a research paper, a physical product that is connected to the research paper in some way, a portfolio, and an eight-minute oral presentation of the paper and the project to a panel of five adults from the school and community.

I have read my child's Senior Project proposal as outlined in the Letter of Intent. I realize that the fifteen hours necessary to complete the physical product will be fulfilled after school hours and under the supervision of one or more adult mentors chosen by my child.

I indemnify and hold harmless John A. Holmes High School and its employees for any accident or injury that may result from participation in Senior Project.
