The Stage of My Life

At night I lie, I lie and wait
for sleep to overcome my empty ways,
my desperate and empty life.
All day I play an empty part.
My character is happy,
bright and smart.
I paint a mask over my empty face,
one that glows and smiles before it fades.
All anyone knows is my part,
for I play it with exquisite skill.
No one sees my empty face,
just the mask I wear at will.
After the day is through
I remove my mask, the play for the day is done
The real and empty me is released,
my vulnerability is revealed.
That night I'll lie and wait
for the next day to approach.
I hope that by a twist of fate,
tomorrow will be better than the day before
