I paint with transparent watercolor because...

Because the way the way the pigment mingles with the paper, water, air, and my particular personality allows me to best capture the moment as I see and feel it.

My interest in painting began as a child, observing the clouds floating over the Willamette Valley and trying to discern what makes clouds look like clouds. My first recognition as an artist began in the 3rd grade, painting Mt. Hood out of my classroom window. After a long hiatus, my actual art "career" began sixteen years ago when I was invited to participate in the Trout Lake Festival of the Arts.

I have participated in the Pacific Northwest Regional Plein Air Show since 2005 and in 2006 began the Columbia Gorge Pleinairists, a group that meets on a weekly basis from May through September to paint in the Columbia River Gorge.

Over the years my art has won many awards, the most honorable would have to include having a painting accepted into the 2010 National Watercolor Exhibit in San Pedro, CA, and receiving an award for "Outstanding Watercolor" in Canvoo's "Bold Brush" painting competition for February of 2010, for which I also made the top 15% in June 2010, November 2010, and June or 2011, all with different paintings.

Transparent Watercolor...

Transparent watercolor is ground up pigment that when mixed with generous amounts of water will appear as a thin transparent wash of color that allows the passing of light through glazes of paint to reflect off the paper’s surface. As additional washes are applied, a visual compound of color develops, as the underlying color(s) interacts and adds to the upper layers. In a transparent watercolor, the only white spaces will be those areas of the paper that remain unpainted. Consequently, white areas in this type of painting must be carefully planned for and protected against unintentional coloring.

Because each pigment, by each manufacturer, has its own characteristics and properties, when pigments are applied, mixed, or layered, the results vary depending on those properties; the sequence in which they are applied; and the amount of water used, or not used. As a result, you could paint your whole life and never fully control it. I believe the unexpected results help mimic the chaos of nature and it’s surprises and create exciting challenges that keep life exciting!
