Hurricane Information

 
Hurricane Safety Rules
  Hurricane: A hurricane is a circular storm with winds of 74 mph or higher. One unique characteristic of a hurricane is a relatively calm center called the "eye." These storms build up power and momentum over water, but quickly diminish over land. Hurricanes are most common during the August-September time frame, but June through November is considered the Atlantic hurricane season.

  1. Buy or store drinking water in clean containers (i.e., jugs, bottles).
  2. Ensure you have enough non-perishable food for a minimum of one week.
  3. Prepare a disaster supply kit to include the following items: flashlight with extra batteries, battery- operated portable radio with extra batteries first aid kit, and essential medicines.
  4. Keep your automobile fueled.
  5. Board up or tape windows larger than 3ft. by 3ft. If taping, use duct tape and mark an "X" configuration only on the inside of the window. Remember all tape will need to be removed after the hurricane passes. Damage to small windows is mainly from wind driven debris. Large windows may be broken by wind pressure.
  6. Secure or place indoors, all loose objects located outside. This includes garbage cans, lawn furniture, garden tools, signs and other movable objects that might be blown or washed away.
  7. Remain indoors away from windows, skylights and glass doors during the hurricane unless absolutely necessary.
  8. If advised to evacuate area, follow directions to local authorities.
  9. Leave beaches and low-lying areas that may be swept by high tides. Leave early, don't run the risk of being marooned.
  10. Be aware of damaged utilities (leaking gas lines, exposed electrical lines, etc.) know the location of power cut off switches. Report damage to the Civil Engineer Damage Control Center at 394-4182or 2758.
