More than 500 military members and their families converged on Pope Park to mark the official start of the second summer of Air Mobility Command’s summer promotion program, “Around the World in 90 Days,” or “ATWIND” for short.
The kick-off event included a gift bag for the first 100 members arriving at the picnic. The bag held a black Pope ATWIND T-shirt, an ATWIND game piece, an ATWIND flyer, a Sprint brochure and two pieces of gum.
All attendees received an ATWIND game piece, posters explaining the game’s rules and prizes available, as well as a generic introductory game piece number that all ATWIND players may register: 021-178-9014.
To encourage people to participate, Crown Ford displayed a 2000 Ford Windstar, representing the first place prize at destination five - Scott AFB, Ill.
An additional incentive to play ATWIND is a $50,000 cash prize. The 12 participating AMC bases will be competing for one of three Year of the Family 2000 cash awards, according to the ATWIND Web site. The top three bases will be judged on the total miles accumulated by their eligible members. The total miles is based on a handicap to accommodate smaller bases. The three bases that log the most miles will receive $12,500, $25,000 and $50,000, respectively, for their services squadrons and local quality of life issues. In addition to free watermelon, soda and chips, picnickers had the opportunity to sign a petition to keep the base commissary open.
“[The kick-off] was great,” said Tech. Sgt. Mark Key, 43rd Supply Squadron dormitory manager, who was sunbathing with his wife, Evelyn. “The new park is handy and our two kids are having a blast. This gives us time to kick back and relax.”
