The art work, to be installed on a triangle of land bounded by Woodward, Hunter and Haynes, will be done by noted New York artist Alice Aycock. She won out against such formidable competitors as fellow sculptors Keith Sonnier, Richard Artschwager and Judy Pfaff. Represented in museums throughout the world, Aycock is known in this area for her major piece on the University of Michigan's North Campus and a group of outdoor works she did for Cranbrook in 1978. As yet there are no drawings and no models of "the world-class piece of art that would signify a world-class city," in the words of Maureen VanDine, chairwoman of the Gateway committee of the Cultural Council of Birmingham Bloomfield. " Meanwhile, the Gateway folks will be out raising money for the sculpture, which they hope will be installed by the summer of 1997.
Iberia Tile of Miami generously donated the tiles for the mural. In addition, they will create projects to raise funds for educational purposes. A major membership drive was initiated in the Fall of 1997 with a kick-off tour of public and corporate art collections in the New York area. The large (7 feet high and 28 feet long) openwork metal sculpture combines lines, curves and shapes of monumental-sized human faces to form a graceful composition in black silhouette. It signifies the reality of America as a unique place on earth where virtually every known ethnic group on the planet is represented and where all cultures and traditions deserve to be known and respected.
