I have been a Bookbinder for over 35 years working on all types of printed books, both antiquarian and modern. My work involves a wide range from simple thesis binding for students, through to fine leather bindings for presentation and competition. I use a
variety of fine leathers, decorative papers from all over the world and a wide range of book cloth.
Bookbinding as a craft has it's origins in the ancient world where various techniques were used for the covering of documents on
papyrus and parchment.
Most of the tools and techniques now used date back some six
hundred years and predate the invention of printing and the
widespread use of paper.
Early books were bound in a variety of materials but leather
became predominant, in earlier times over wooden boards and later with various kinds of paste board and cardboard.
The majority of modern books are mass produced in cloth
bindings or in paperback. Leather is still used on some fine
bindings and the design of such bindings has undergone a
renaissance during the present century with many binders
producing innovative and exciting work.
