Making a Plaid (Gingham) Pattern
I was asked by a friend of mine how I made my Plaid pattern so I decided to make this tutorial showing how. I'm sure there are similar tutorials on the internet, but this is how I do it.
Step 1: Open a new image 40 x 40 as shown.

Step 2: Flood fill the image with the background color of your choice. I used white here as shown.

Step 3: Choose the other 2 colors you wish to use. One color should be darker than the other. Here I have chosen 2 shades of green.

Step 4: DOUBLE-CLICK on the selection tool  in the tool bar. and a Select Area box will open. Set the settings as shown.

Click ok.

Step 5: Flood fill the selected area with the darker color as shown.

Step 6: DOUBLE-CLICK on the selection tool in the tool bar again, and set the settings as shown.
Click ok.

Step 7: Flood fill the selected area with the lighter color as shown.

Step 8: Step 6: DOUBLE-CLICK on the selection tool in the tool bar again, and set the settings as shown.

Click ok

Step 9: Flood fill the selected area with the lighter color as shown.

Step 10: Deselect the image (Image>Select None).
At this time, you can save it as a psp, gif, or jpg file. You may resize the image to make the pattern smaller if you wish. Now all you do is use this pattern to flood fill larger images. Try using a variety of colors for different effects. You can add lines etc. as I have done in the samples below.

If you have any questions about the instructions, Please let me know and I will try to answer them.
