Protective Eye
(talisman)

< Previous----Next>

Turned on its side, the figure in this piece forms the pupil and iris of a "protective eye." The widely spread superstition of the "evil eye" concerns a envious eye which sometimes deliberately casts a spell on another and other times unintentionally wills harm through jealousy. The "protective eye,” often nicknamed the evil eye for the eye which it references, deflects the ill will of the evil wisher. Sometimes the protective eye shatters, indicating that it has absorbed and neutralized the harmful gaze which caused it to break. Made from glazed red earthenware clay, the back of this limited edition piece displays the artist's signature stamp and the LQP chop mark, 1 1/2" high.
