Beowulf Questions

1.) Shild is a danish king who had arrived in denmark as a child alone in a ship loaded with treasures (11). Shild was a very powerful and influential man. In text it says "He ruled Lands on all sides: wherever the sea Would take them his soldiers sailed, returned with tribute and obedience." (11)
2.) Shild's funeral was a huge ordeal, because he was such a great leader for the Danes. They laid his body by the mast on a boat. Then they surrounded his body with precious jewels, gold, helmets, shields, etc. The boat was then set afloat to drift out towards the endless sea. (12). The rituals of this funeral indicate that the Danes had a lot of respect and courtesy for their leaders. Their leaders were very important to them.
3.) Shild - Beowulf - Healfdane(Hergar, Hrothgar, Halgo, Yrs ) Hrothgar was a great swordsman.
4.) The beginning of the section talks about the monster. This gruesome detail contrasts to the poet's songs about beautiful things. ".....These beautiful plains marked off by the ocean...."(13). To portray the feeling of the mean in Hrothgar's hall compared to the monster outside the hall.
5.) Grendel's existence is explained as " concieved by a pair of those monster's born of Cain, murderous creatures banished, By God, punished forever for the crime of Abel's death (13-14)."
6.) Grendel goes to Herot during the night to kill and feed off of the drunken men (14). the attacks last for 12 winters. The result is people are being eaten and killed; 30 men at a time the first day (14).
7.) Hrothgar is on the "good side" because his thron is protected by god. Grendel dares not challenge God for he could not know the love of God (15).
8.) He comes off very arrogant and pompous. He names all the wonderful things he's conquered and done. He seems very sure of himself and the fact that he can defeat and conquer anything and or anyone (14).
9.) Beowulf will use no weapons, only his bare hands (18)
10.) He is proud because he knows he can kill Grendel, howerver only with the help of God.
11.) The battle was over, Beowulf had been granted new glory (21). Out of the marsh from the foot of misty Hills and bogs, bearing God's hatred, Grendel came, hoping to kill.....(19).
12.) And over and over they swore that nowhere On earth or under the spreading sky Or between the seas, neither south nor north, Was there a warrior worthier to rule over men (22).
