At eleven years of age, Daniel Koulack bought a banjo with money saved up from his paper route. A year later, he made his professional debut on the main stage at the world-renowned Winnipeg Folk Festival. And he didn't stop there...

Since 1984, Daniel has played guitar and mandolin with Canada's Klezmer ambassadors, Finjan. They have recorded four albums, two of which have garnered Juno nominations. Finjan has delighted audiences across North America and in Europe with their craft and dedication.

It is as a composer that Daniel comes into his own. Both his recordings were nominated as Best Roots and Traditional at the Junos and, since 1990, he has toured Canada with the Knappen Street All-Star Band, playing their "good-time music" for both jazz and folk audiences. He has also created music for theatre and dance and is known as a producer and arranger with a keen ear and a love of beautiful music.

In 1997, Daniel co-founded From Both Ends of the Earth with Marilyn Lerner and Sasha Boychouk, presenting modern interpretations of traditional Jewish and Ukrainian music. Festival patrons across the country have been thrilled by their unique approach to these timeless melodies.

Not one to rest on his laurels, Daniel took up the string bass and audiences from coast to coast have enjoyed his swinging contribution to the Hot Club stylings of Swing Soniq and the groove-oriented jazz of Ken Gold's Special Grind.
