Odysseus under the ram, on a black figure Attic oenochoe in Athens museum

Here, Polyphemus sits wide awake at the mouth of the cave, his hand raised to feels the ram's back. Only the head and shoulders of the ram appear coming out of the cave, represented by a shapeless piece of rock. The bearded head of Odysseus can be seen under the ram.

The mouth of the cave is suggested by the shapeless rock to the left and also above the head of the Cyclops. Shrubs grow from the side of this rock and spread over the background of the picture.
