Look for the hot spots on the picture! | Everything we do on this course
can be illustrated by reference to a building, or a vase painting, or a sculpture.
Mythology, theatre, the arts and crafts, sport, family life, daily life at work
and in the home - all of these things were illustrated by artists in one way or
another. The architects and builders raised public buildings like temples
on which sculptors could leave their mark. Temples were built on holy sites called sanctuaries and on this course we go to a number of key sites such as Delphi, Olympia and Athens. |
Olympia | The
top picture shows two different styles or "orders" of architecture: -
doric and ionic. Which is which?.
The bottom picture shows the Sanctuary of Olympia, dedicated to Zeus and his family, and home of the Olympic Games.
