Hotmail Free Email Service
There is a major problem with pornographic junk mail on the free email service offered by Hotmail (MSN).
In talking with one woman who has had a Hotmail account for over 5 years, we discovered some unsettling information:
"I have been using Hotmail for five years and there has never been this kind of a proliferation of filth prior. Hotmail used to be owned by a different company, but when MSN took it over, it started to go downhill. Not only are they charging users money for 'larger mailbox space' now, the service has become flooded with a wave of porno junk mail. Sometimes I'll get an email with a really disgusting subject title, anything from derogatory slurs about women to 'rape fantasy' to 'farm animal sex'. Other times, I'll get an email with a subject saying something like 'it was nice chatting with you on Friday' and I'll open it up thinking it might be from a friend and there's a pornographic picture and a link to a pornography site. Something really needs to be done about this serious issue. I am sure that these things can be filtered out by the email service, because I also have an account with Yahoo!, and they've never had any of these problems. It's really sad that Hotmail today is in this kind of a state. What was once a really great service now ruined."
While Hotmail requires parental consent through use of a credit card if a child who is signing up enters their proper year of birth, a question remains. Are the children who are signing up for this email service receiving pornographic junk mail too? Does Hotmail have some way of monitoring or preventing this that they are not utilizing?
An increase in sale of information through 3rd party sites is also a pressing issue. Keep careful track of which sites you buy products from and what information you give them. Also, when a junk mailing list says "Click here to unsubscribe" at the bottom of an email, never click on the link. It is generally a trick by the junk mailers to check to see if your account is still active, after which often you will receive more junk mail. (Often they will sell your email address to other junk mailers, claiming that yours is an "active account").
Apparently, AOL users also has a problem with pornographic junk mail. Another woman told us that she receives up to ten of these emails in her mailbox each day.

Fox and Playboy Produce TV Special
The television station which produces the series "Malcolm in the Middle" about a child in grade school will not be as family-oriented next month, apparently, as it is planning to release a "reality tv" special this May entitled "Girl Next Door: In Search of the Next Playboy Centerfold".
Fox, which once seemed progressive with its release of The Simpsons, has apparently shifted its ideals, and its pocketbook, to other aims.

Dwyco Video Chat & Conferencing System
It has come to our attention that there is a internet video chat and conferencing system called Dwyco (CDC32) (http://www.dwyco.com) which is freely available online that has an "adult" section where people exchange pornographic material.
The major problem with this system is conveyed by our source: "The reason I am so concerned is, that I caught my children playing with this program, and then immediately wiped it from the computer. The only thing that happens when someone tries to access the "adult" area of this program is a box appears, indicating that you should be an adult to enter. A person of any age can access this material. I do not want other parents' children to be subjected to this material."
The fact that children can and do download these kind of systems and engage in exchanges of pornographic video, text, and sound through this service brings to light a question of community responsibility. Is it enough to simply protect our own children from getting ahold of this kind of service? Or is the wrong that this kind of service is readily available without verification of adulthood in the first place? We are inclined to believe the latter.
About Dwyco
From the site: "The Dwyco Video Conferencing System (CDC32) is an advanced program for Windows95/98/NT4/ME/2000/XP that allows you to send and receive video, audio, and chat in real-time across the Internet. It is very flexible, and works equally well as a video chat tool or a video broadcast server. You can use it like an Internet phone, a chat board, a security cam, etc. Or you can use just the audio and chat, or just the video, and so on. It's up to you and your computer's hardware and communication capabilities. "
The site claims that both "G-rated and Adult directory listings" are available through their system, but does not specify as to how children are kept from entering the adult section. Apparently, children are truly not kept from the adult section, and the site does not even address this concern.
Dwyco states in their license agreement, found here,
(http://www.dwyco.com/LICENSE.TXT) that they will assume "NO LIABILITY FOR DAMAGES. In no event shall Aureate Media or its
suppliers be liable for any damages whatsoever (including, without
limitation, damages for loss of business profits, business interruption,
loss of business information, or any other pecuniary loss) arising out
of the use of or inability to use this SOFTWARE PRODUCT, EVEN IF AUREATE
MEDIA HAS BEEN ADVISED OF THE POSSIBILITY OF SUCH DAMAGES."
Nowhere in the Dwyco license or on the Dwyco site is a mention of the issue of children becoming exposed to pornography through their system.
Does the system convey that it is not child-friendly? Much the contrary, as this kid-friendly image is prominantly on the download site:

In Conclusion
At any rate, we feel it necessary for Dwyco to take responsibility in this issue, ensuring that other children do not become exposed to pornography by updating their system to better validate users' adult status (perhaps through credit card registration, etc.). We are against the availability of pornography online period, but this is a particularly heinous case, in that children are being exposed to it.
We recommend that you write to Dwyco, Inc. and make them aware of these concerns:

Complete Site Update
Doing our best to bring you anti-pornography resources, we have recently updated our site to a more user-friendly format. We are adding things all the time, and we hope to soon have weekly news updates to keep you well informed. We are also excited about Creating Social Justice's petitions. CSJ is currently working on petitions to companies that support pornography. We encourage you to join in the fight.
Our new weekly news updates will give you the information you need to be in the know about the situation in our nation with pornography. We hope you will make good use of them. We will try to keep you up to date weekly right here on the main page.
Another very important thing to highlight is our Share Your Story section, where you can share your story with the world and show the world how pornography can hurt people. This is very important as it shows your true testimonial about pornography to those who would say that porn does not hurt people, and shows them how it has hurt you. You can read other people's testimonials in our True Pornography Horror Stories section.
With our new site and our new news section coming up, December's getting pretty exciting. Stay tuned for
our next installment.

Mission Statement
We understand that the political views of each individual group that is against pornography differ, and that the ways in which this subject matter is approached are different for all of these groups.
That is why we have proposed to attempt to direct the subject matter in a way that would be agreeable to each particular grouping. We believe that regardless of individual political viewpoints, this issue is one that is of universal importance.
With this site and group we hope to achieve the goal of unity of action in this case. We believe that if we all work together in this, we will have more presence and make more of an impact over all. We want to have a real presence in the community and enact positive change.
Please join us in our fight to make a difference.
Together we can make the world a safe and beautiful place.
