~Alaska Native Beading~

Welcome to the Alaska Native Beading Site! My name is Coreen R. Noble, Tlingit of the Kiksawdi Tribe. Originally from Wrangells Stikine River. Our family moved to the Village of Kake many years ago. They had family fish camps around Kake. The Village of Kake, known for The Worlds Tallest Totem Pole, built in 1971, all of 132 feet tall. I was there when they cut the tree down, and when they sent the tree to Haines to be carve by the Most well known carvers, and when it returned from Japan's World Fair in 1972. IT had faded in the many colors that it was originally painted, I remember that the Japanese had repainted it, (it looked like a big dragon) They had painted it with their bright colors! So before the totem pole was raised, it had to be repainted again. This is the totem pole story as I remember it. I danced with my grandmother Liz that day, and with my Grandfather Albert Kadake.

I was raised by my Grandmother Lizzie Austin Jackson. She taught me many arts and crafts during my stay at her home. One of which was Beading. When I bead, I often think of her. Her name was Skeetch, and my name is Nautchetch. I was named after my great grandmother. She helped give English names to our People when the missionaries came to the Village's.
