Map of Austin Poetry #175

Hello, Poets,

What an incredible week to return to Austin! I hit the
door at 7 p.m., shed grungy road attire, showered and
quick changed, to make it to Zach Scott Theater for
Austin's first High School Slam finals. Congrats to
Harmeny, Eliana, Jason and Panika, with Amy as
alternate. They made the team that will represent
Austin in April at the National High School Poetry
Slam in Ann Arbor, Michigan. They are accepting
donations for the trip. Anyone wanting to spring for
these up and coming stars, contact Rich Perin at
evangelatinist@yahoo.com.

While I'm on the subject of fundraisers, AIPF's annual
fundraiser is this Sunday, March 19. See the listing
in Austin Poets Guide, Section 1.

Matthew Jon Conley, Ernie Cline and Sara Sutterfield
Winn took home the scratch Wednesday night at the
Austin slam's new bigger better screaming success
location, The Mercury, above Jazz on 6th Street. Has
it been said lately that Mike Henry rocks?
Visiting poets Regie Gibson and MC Jabber made guest
appearances all over Central Texas last week,
conjuring their words into fire, poetry's natural
element. Regie, the 1998 National Poetry Slam
individual champ, featured at the High School slam,
San Antonio's Puro slam, and the Austin slam. MC
Jabber featured just about everywhere else. Both
assure me they will return. I'm counting on it.

Poets and musicians turned out Saturday night for the
Amnesty International/Carritas benefit at Gaby & Mo's.
Money was donated, petitions were signed, letters were
written, voices were raised against human rights
violations. My kinda folks!
