Feng Shui is based on the principle of a subtle electromagnetic force called chi energy. It flows around the human body and throughout the universe, carried by wind, water, light, sound and the sun's energy. The Chinese characters for Feng Shui mean "wind" and " water" reflecting the way chi energy moves. The chi energy that you are exposed to influences your thoughts, emotions and health.
The aim of Feng Shui is to help you make simple, positive changes to the arrangement and décor of your home or workplace. This, in turn, helps to alter the flow of chi energy in such a way as to promote your health, wealth and happiness.
I AM FEELING TIRED AND SLUGGISH. CAN FENG SHUI HELP?
Change the atmosphere in your home. Decorate with bright colours, particularly reds, yellows and oranges. Keep surfaces clear and living spaces free from clutter. Hanging more mirrors and keeping plants with pointed leaves will also encourage a faster flow of chi energy making your home feel more active. Try playing rhythmic music on your sound system. The vibrations it emits will stimulate your senses and make you feel more dynamic.
Certain foods will also increase your energy level. Complex carbohydrates, such as rice, as well as root vegetables, beans, nuts, seeds and fish will release energy slowly but enduringly which is why they are good for beating lethargy, as opposed to the "quick hit" sugary foods.
Physical exercise is a great way to boost vitality, if you can only find the energy to get going ! You may feel motivated if you display pictures around your home of yourself or other people playing sports. Another way to maintain your enthusiasm is to keep a timetable of your exercise routine or a record of your physical performance in a prominent place where you will regularly catch sight of it.
The material and color of the clothes you wear during exercise will influence your personal chi energy. To ensure your body and chi energy breathe properly, make sure your garments are of pure cotton. Synthetic fibres can upset your flow of chi energy. To help keep your energy levels high, choose an active, stimulating colour. White, red, yellow, fiery purple and orange will all have an invigorating influence on your chi energy.
A spacious atmosphere is not only healthier, it can also help to inspire you to keep fit. A home that is overfurnished with soft chairs, cushions, carpets, and curtains will produce an atmosphere that encourages you to feel unmotivated. Keeping your home reasonably empty, and growing as many live indoor plants as practical will create a lively, fresh ambience.
To feel more motivated and competitive, paint your walls white and leave them uncluttered. Walls that are beige, brown, pink, dark maroon or grey will be less stimulating, particularly if they are used to display paintings and pictures. If your home has small rooms with low ceilings, you will find it a greater challenge to turn it into an energetic and stimulating environment than if it has large, tall rooms. In these small rooms, up-lights will create the impression that the ceilings are higher.
To align yourself with a more energizing type of energy, try sleeping with the top of your head pointing eastward. If you are a light sleeper, opt for the south east as the other directions can be too stimulating for deep sleep.
MY ASTHMA HAS BECOME WORSE. CAN FENG SHUI HELP ?
According to Feng Shui philosophy, heavy, stagnant or sticky chi energy encourages asthma. Therefore, if you are an asthma sufferer, the ideal atmosphere to have in your home is one where the air is clean, fresh and free from dust, and there is no dampness or mildew.
Dust is most likely to collect in rugs, carpets, curtains and soft furnishings, so if possible, opt for wooden floors and blinds instead. If you cannot do this, make sure you wash and air fabrics and covers frequently. Plants absorb moisture and help to keep the air clean, so keep plenty in the home, particularly in the kitchen and bathroom where dampness and mildew can build up. Growing plants in your bedroom will also radiate good chi energy while you sleep.
The west and north-west are the directions associated with your lungs, so try to ensure that these areas of your home in particular are clean, tidy and dust-free. To prevent chi from stagnating in these areas, avoid having rubbish, rotting foods or wilting flowers there. If you move again in the future, avoid homes where the kitchen, bathroom and utility rooms are in the west and north-west, and make sure that each room has a window.
The health of your skin will also subtly affect your lungs, so always wear clothes made from pure cotton or other natural fabrics. Synthetic materials attract a charge of static electricity that can irritate your skin. Scrubbing your body with a hot, damp cotton hand towel every day will also help to refresh and invigorate your skin. Loufas are great! You should also include leafy green vegetables in your diet as they can increase the chi energy of your lungs. I HAVE BEEN CATCHING A LOT OF COLDS. CAN FENG SHUI HELP? According to Eastern medicine, the occasional cold is seen as a useful way to exorcise your immune system, clear out toxins and force you to have a rest. If this happens too often, however, this is a sign that you are becoming too run down and weak. Being surrounded by a cold and damp environment increases the risk of catching a cold. Make sure there is no dampness in your house. Quickly wipe up any spillage in the kitchen and bathroom, don't leave water in the sinks, fix any leaking taps, close the toilet seat. Objects that have mildew growing on them, such as shower curtains, should be thrown away and replaced. To create an atmosphere of general dryness and warmth, light candles or a natural fire, or turn on the central heating. Whenever there is a dry sunny day, hang your bedding outside to air it and allow it to soak up the sun's warming rays. To make sure there is space for energy and air to circulate easily, open the windows every day and try to keep your home relatively free from clutter. Live plants are useful for absorbing moisture, so keep plenty of these in your home, especially in the kitchen and bathroom. They will also keep the air clean, fresh and healthy. Don't waste money on artificial plants. Strong, bright colours will also help to create a more warming atmosphere in your home. Yellow or orange walls will make a room feel warmer, but you can also place yellow, orange or red decorative objects around the house to achieve this brightening effect. Make sure you eat warming soups, stews or casseroles that contain grains and root vegetables. You should also reduce the amount of sugary foods you eat. Exercise, and body scrubs will also help.
