Appearance: Night Death is a massive, fierce-looking warrior as big as a bear. His skin is deeply tanned and covered in course, black hair. He is extremely muscular and wears a bushy, black beard on his scarred face. In battle, the warrior wears bronze plate mail taken from the corpse of an enemy Dekan. His helmet resembles the head of a bear. His preferred weapons, a great spear and a long bow, are both enchanted by raptor magic.
Personality: Night Death is a driven man with a single goal--the conquest of the plains. He wishes to be the greatest warrior king in the world, sitting in a throne made of the crushed skulls of his enemies. He is extremely vengeful and cynical, taking offense to the slightest perceived insult and always expecting the worst in any person. Despite this, he has a strange preoccupation with the supernatural. He's superstitious and believes strongly in fortune-telling. While he openly criticizes the use of magic, he also has no objection to secretly employing it to his own benefit. He does not acknowledge the hypocrisy of this belief.
History:
Later on, Night Death received a new concubine, a young
girl named Moon Eyes. Frightened, she made up a lie that she had
soothsaying abilities, but only if her virginity remained intact.
Intrigued, Night Death believed her. He protectively kept her with him
everywhere he went, even into battle, to ask her advice on any situation before
him. By sheer luck, Moon Eyes continued to be right in her predictions,
and so Night Death kept her around, untouched, and would let no other man touch
her, either.
Campaign Events: Night Death led the Nightmare Legion, Bloodrain
Legion, and Tempest Legion into battle against the small village of Oath.
This was the first step in his plan for conquering the plains. Once Oath
was defeated, he would turn it into a base of operations and send his armies out
from there to Syna, Sennetta, and Narin. Unfortunately, his plans were
ultimately foiled by Desiree and her companions, who arrived in time to defend
the town.
Outraged,
Night Death called a retreat and had his men regroup at a camp near the Nameless
Swamp. While coming up with a new strategy, Desiree and her companions
sneaked into his camp, disguised as tribals. Desiree stole his plans in
hopes of presenting them as proof that the Black Cloud was in cahoots with the
Raptor Empire. The party was discovered and forced to flee, but Night
Death pursued with his best men. A fight broke out, and all of Night
Death's men were slaughtered. Realizing he was in a bad spot, he
challenged Desiree to a one-on-one duel. Desiree agreed, but allowed Rhian
to fight as her champion. The paladin was no match for Night Death,
however. Just before Night Death could strike the killing blow, Desiree
unleashed a lightning bolt that smote the barbarian warrior.
DM's Commentary: Originally, I was going to name the character
Death Night as sort of a pun. But I later changed it when I started to
worry it would be too difficult to take him seriously if I kept the pun
name. (A Death Knight is an undead warrior in the Monster Manual, you
see.)
