It is evident that not only were the Victorian's eclectic in their style of decorating but in their collection of jewelry as well. They enjoyed many kinds of jewelry. One of those among their valued and most cherished pieces of jewelry was the Cameo. They are still cherished today and very valuable. Some cameos were kept as keepsakes and heirlooms. Many varieties of cameos represented political or prominent people.

Greecian characters often made up the the genteel face of a Cameo. One could depict the smooth subtle lines on the creamy face of a greek woman who is looking away, her attention captivated by an unknown. Another might reveal a tender peaceful solitude adorning the face of a man. The fine details and graceful beauty become the important features of a Cameo.

Beautiful golds and rose gold, sardonyx, and bezel make up common features in Cameos. Some more ornate pieces may have small pearls or other kinds of jewels in the framing of the Cameo. Lava pins were another exceptional wonder and admired by many Victorians. These cameos often portrayed prominent people: artists, political and philisophical figures.

In the softness of a Cameo is a warm memory. Maybe it is an heirloom handed down from a grandmother or mother. The thoughts and memories it provokes are good ones of times gone by. It's a piece of jewelry worn near the heart and it's cherished just the same. And with each cameo is a lifetime of memories, some of which time will never reveal.

By the same token cameos can tell a fountain of stories; stories of each Lady adorned with such a graceful piece of jewelry. Many Ladies were not permitted to wear so much jewelry during the daylight hours due to proper etiquette during that period. But they almost always was permitted to wear cameos and other delicate jewelry like brooches upon the collar of their dresses, no matter the time of day.
