Tips for Decorating Victorian

**The Victorians believed they were living in an era of change and progress. Like their fashions their furnishings and decorations were new and forever changing. Your house can have the flavor and feel of a victorian home and at a budget that is right and comfortable for you.

**Now it's okay to collect different styles of period furniture but most Victorians tried to stick to one type of wood. Of course I go with what I can get *wink*.

**If your seating is uncomfortable simply choose a sofa or chair that is overstuffed...choose one with a period-style fabric and fringe. Decorate with pillows with a similar theme. I took my velveteen couch and covered it with a cream colored slip cover. The covering has fringe at the bottom and goes nicely with my floral curtains. I bought a few lovely pale smokey blue pillows with a floral pattern for the couch. It looks much better I say now.

**If you can't afford to buy a roomful of wallpapers that go with the date of your furnishings then just paint your walls a solid color and then run a deep wallpaper frieze along the top.

**Want to create the effect of wainscoting at an efficient cost. Put a wooden chair rail around the room about 3 foot from the baseboard. then cover the are below it with striped wallpaper.

**You could hang lace curtains from a plain wood rod and linen shades decorated in stencils.

**Do you have a table that's not being used for anything. Place it near a window which holds beautiful curtains. Place a nice piece of fabric over the table, covering any flaws the table may have. You can place numerable things on the table to give it character. You could place a smoked glass lamp, a row of antique books, a tin tray with beautiful seashells and coral, ornamental boxes, candy dishes and small nick nacks, and an interesting vase. These kinds of tables can be attention getters and draw attention to an area in the room where you want it to be drawn.

**Place a large family album with vintage photos, postcards or tradecards.

**Don't be afraid to cover tables with lace skirts or table cloths.

**Place an interesting painting on an easel in a corner somewhere.

**Get some great framed reprints of Queen Victoria. Having the look of royalty in your home will truly give your home the English Victorian touch.

**You can add trimmings of braid, cord, fringe and tassles to curtains, couches, chairs and pillows that you already have. Wal-Mart and Jo ann Fabrics sell those items.

**Try something wild and colorful! Hang some colorful beads in a doorway or place peacock feathers in a large vase. Place a color fan behind a mirror.

**Try to get all your paintings in a heavy gilded frame. This gives your reprints a more authentic look.

**Mass your pictures together on walls.

Well that's all the hints I could give for now. I will come in here periodically and give some news, hints or stories or anything I may find that may be interesting or may be of some use to you in your decorating. Have a great Victorian Day!~~~Lana
