John and Mag ? Shrable

John Shrable was born c1846 in Rutherford County, North Carolina, to Thomas Jefferson and Saletha Moore Shrable. He was their first child and was followed by sisters - Malinda, Sarah and Leaner.

John's parents moved from Rutherford County, North Carolina to Alabama between the 1850 census and Leaner's birth c1851. Here John's mother died and the family pressed on to Fulton County, Arkansas, where John soon received a new step-mother, Ruth Ann McCarty Barker, c1852 and several new step siblings including a step-brother who was his same age (James Barker) and one who was three years older (George Barker). He also was blessed with 2 more brothers and 2 more sisters by his father and Ruth.

After his appearance with his blended family on the 1860 census of Bennett Bayou Township, Fulton County, Arkansas, when he was 14, I have no further record for him until his appearance on the 1880 census.

He most likely served in the civil war as the following is listed in 'Index to Arkansas Confederate Soldiers' {Vol III P-Z) which is compiled service records held at NARA:

I have not yet attempted to order these records, however, I have no knowledge of any other Schroeble/Scrabel/Schrabel family in Arkansas.

John was married to Margaret J 'Mag' ?, although I do not know where or when.

John and Mag had the following children:

They appeared as follows on the 1880 census of Springfield, Greene Co, Missouri (Dist 46):

This family was living on Pacific Street in 'North Springfield', however, the next page said 'Campbell Township' and had a family which was a continuation of one from page 46. They were enumerated #154/186. Neighbors were #149 Michael Kelly; #150 John Nelson; #151 J F Miller; #152 J F Waits; #153 J J Clayman; #155/187 D Murphy; #155/188 J Donnally, Tim Tracey, Mike McKimmon, J B Sheldon, Michael O Connor, Daniel Sullivan, and George Burns; #156 J M Puller; #157 Madison Howell; #158 Benjamin Puller.

Since John moved to Springfield sometime before 1870, he is not generally known to the Shrable's who still live in Fulton County. At the time that he wrote his will in 1917, he lived at 1503 Sherman Street, Springfield, Missouri.

I did, however, find a copy of his will in the Fulton County, Arkansas, probate records indicating that he still had some connection to the family left in Fulton County.

Several more typed documents were included in this estate proceeding; the testimony of L B Comstock; the testimony of Elmer G Wadlow and W E Freeman that they recognized the signature of J A Moon, decd, etc.

Why were only some of John's children in his will? Had Mary, George and Susanah died before he wrote his will?Or, did he feel that they did not need anything from him at his death?
