*In
1999 a group of women golfers decided that Cochise County and Sierra Vista golf
courses needed to be recognized by women all over the region and state... The
Southeastern Arizona Women's Amateur Championship was begun and the two courses
selected to test the skills of golfers were the Mountain View Golf Course on
Fort Huachuca and the Pueblo del Sol Country Club. 
* Mountain View is one of the oldest established courses in Cochise County. With
moguls guarding the greens there is no reason to have very many sand traps.
Players agree that the undulating bent greens prove to be a challenge. Pueblo
del Sol Country Club is one of the state's more difficult courses for women. The
fast bent greens and tight lie bent fairways can test the skills of every
player. It was felt that if one could conquer these two courses back to back she
deserved the title of Southeastern Arizona Women's Amateur Champion. *In 2002 the tournament was not held due to a death in the family of the president, Bron Buddle Cote. In the fall of that year, Ms. Cote turned the organization over to the remaining members of the original group and the present Southeastern Arizona Women's Amateur Association was formed. Players from as far a Georgia and South Carolina have participated in the event each year.
*Since
SAWAA's purpose is to promote Women's amateur golf, in 2003 it adopted the
Arizona Junior Girls Americas Cup Team. In 2004 the Board decided to help
improve the skills of Juniors and opened the first day of the tournament to
Juniors. Juniors have a separate gross competition and also a team net
competition with an adult as a partner. It is hoped that these efforts will
result in helping to produce the best amateur golfers in the state of Arizona.
SAWAA expects this tournament to grow and become a vital golfing event in the
state and southwest.
