She worked for Keyser Decorating. She enjoyed bowling and playing Bunco, and was a member of a book club. She is survived by her husband of 46 years, William L. "Bill" Ambrose; a daughter, Debra L. Ambrose of Swanton; two sisters, Betty Ann Often of Belair, and Rita Mayles of Piedmont, WV; two brothers, John Kirkwood of Lonaconing, and Robert E. "Teddy" Kirkwood of LaVale Summit; and 2 grandchildren. Interment was at Restlawn Memorial Gardens by Markwood Funeral Home.

She was born August 19, 1925 in Beaver Creek, MD to Clarence W. and Agnes Virginia Taylor Suman. She had worked at Teen World Clothing Store in Hagerstown, and attended Virginia Avenue Baptist Church. Survivors include her husband of 64 years, Oscar R. Andrews; two daughters, Jo Ann Derryberry of Ridgeley, WV, and Tammy S. Lynch (friend David Baker) of Hagerstown; a son, Larry R. Andrews (Lois) of Williamsport; a brother, William A. Suman (Carolyn) of Williamsport; 3 grandchildren; 4 great-grandchildren; and 3 step great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents; a brother, Clarence W. Suman, Jr.; and a son-in-law, Bill Derryberry. Services were held at Rest Haven Funeral Chapel. Interment was at Rest Haven Cemetery.

FALLSTON, MARYLAND: Margaret R. Baliko, 93, died November 9, 2006. She was born March 7, 1913 to the late Charles Gutlobe and Rose Anna Green Windisch. She is survived by two sons, Alexander Carl Baliko III of Edgewood, and Charles F. Baliko of Fallston; a sister, Viola Karmann of Overlea; 6 grandchildren; and 9 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Alexander Carl Baliko, Jr.; and a son, Carl Alexander Baliko. Interment was at Parkwood Cemetery and Mausoleum by McComas Funeral Home.

BANG, Dr. Frederik B.
BALTIMORE, MARYLAND: Dr. Frederik Barry Bang, 64, died October 3, 1981. He was the son of A.F. and Carol Klee Bang, and the grandson of Danish veterinary researcher Bernhard L.F. Bang, who engaged in pivotal research on bovine brucellosis (Bang's disease). Dr. Frederik Bang held a M.D. degree from Johns Hopkins University Medical School. He helped pioneer electron microscopy on viruses, and introduced groundbreaking applications of marine biology to medical research. He served as an officer in the U.S. Army Medical Corps, and directed research on malaria and other tropical diseases in the South Pacific. He was the longtime chair of the Johns Hopkins Department of Pathobiology, serving on the faculty for over 30 years. He was a Fulbright Scholar, a Guggenheim Fellow and a National Research Council Fellow in pathology at the Vanderbilt University Medical School. He was a member of numerous organizations, including the American Institute of Biological Sciences, the American Society of Experimental Pathology, the International Epidemiological Association, the American Association for the Advancement of Science, and the American Society of Clinical Investigation. He was a supporter of the Marine Biological Laboratory at Woods Hole, MA. Survivors include his wife, Betsy Garrett Bang; a son, Axel F. Bang; and two daughters, Molly G. Bang and Caroline Bang. The Frederick Bang Award was established at Johns Hopkins University in his memory.

SILVER SPRING, MARYLAND: Jean C. Belding, 87, died August 13, 2005. She was a secretary. She was born October 18, 1917 to the late Chester Lawrence and Gladys Cecelia Belding. CHESAPEAKE CITY, MARYLAND: George Bennett, 59, died January 5, 1920. He was born in Chesapeake City, and was the son of George W. Bennett. He was a director of the Chesapeake City National Bank, and was active with the development of the Chesapeake and Delaware Canal. He had formerly worked in coal and lumber. He was survived by a sister, Mrs. George S. Woolley. Services were held at his sister's residence. Interment was at the Wilmington and Brandywine Cemetery.

LIBERTYTOWN, MARYLAND: Violet Arbutus "Bootie" Bittinger, 70, died December 20, 2009. She was born January 13, 1939 to the late Henry Harold and Mary Elizabeth Muir Lease. She helped her husband with chores on a nearby dairy farm, and enjoyed camping. She is survived by her husband of 53 years, Clark Bittinger; five children, Elaine Venable of Colorado, Janie Hampton of Arizona, Cindy Evely of Libertytown, Jenny Mae White of Mount Airy, and Vernon Bittinger of Cumberland; 11 grandchildren; 2 great-grandchildren; and six siblings. She was preceded in death by two brothers. Interment was at Resthaven Memorial Gardens in Frederick under the direction of Keeney and Basford Funeral Home.

ELKRIDGE, MARYLAND: Gordon Arnold Chamberlain, 91, died August 13, 2006. He was born June 10, 1915. He retired from the Army after 24 years of service, and was a decorated veteran of World War II. Following his retirement from the military, he worked for 17 years at the National Security Agency. He was a member of the Elks, and enjoyed traveling, reading, and collecting coins. He is survived by his wife of 64 years, Patricia J. Chamberlain; his children, Barbara K. Miller of Milton, VT, Michael L. Chamberlain of Topeka, KS, Joseph G. Chamberlain of Union, SC, David P. Chamberlain of Severn, Thomas J. Chamberlain of Elkridge, Christopher Chamberlain of Jonesville, SC, Terrance P. Chamberlain of Crofton, Timothy A. Chamberlain of Blackstock, SC, and Patricia A. Killinger of Wilsonville, OR; 30 grandchildren; 4 great-grandchildren; and 2 great-great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his siblings, Esther Bellows, Ethel Cuteria, and Leroy Chamberlain. Services were held at Our Lady of the Fields Catholic Church. Burial was at the church cemetery by Hardesty Funeral Home.

BEL AIR, MARYLAND: Charles H. Feveryear, 84, died April 20, 2009. He was born June 17, 1924 to the late Charles and Stella Shearer Feveryear. He was a retired experimental equipment tester at Aberdeen Proving Ground with 30 years of service, and was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II. He attended Bel Air Church of the Nazarene. He is survived by his wife of 56 years, Lorna F. Bloom Feveryear; a daughter, Sheila J. Romagano of Delta; three sons, Galen T. Feveryear (Penny) of Narvon, PA, and Gary W. Feveryear (Dawn) and C. Glenn Feveryear (Rita), all of Delta, PA; 9 grandchildren; and a great-grandson. Services were held at Bel Air Church of the Nazarene, and also at Greenville Church of the Brethren. COLORA, MARYLAND: William Barner "Bill" Flick, 83, died January 7, 2010. He was born November 7, 1926 to William and Anna Sheffler Flick. He was a carrier for the U.S. Postal Service for over 30 years, and was a World War II veteran. He was a 32nd degree Mason, and attended Mount Pleasant United Methodist Church. He served on the board at Ray of Hope Mission and volunteered with Meals On Wheels for 25 years. Survivors include his wife of 32 years, Jane Mitchell Flick; five sons, Wiliam Flick (Marie) of Drexel Hill, PA, John Flick (Linda) of Glen Mills, PA, James Flick (Maureen) of Drexel Hill, PA, Thomas Flick (Marieann) of Media, PA, and Robert Flick (Donna) of Upper Darby, PA; two stepchildren, Michael Mitchell (Susan) of Potomac, and Lucinda Schreck (Gerald) of West Chester, PA; a brother Charles Flick, of Drexel Hill, PA; 22 grandchildren; and 2 great-grandchildren. RIVA, MARYLAND: Isaac Frishman, 92, died March 17, 2008. He was born in Pinsk, Poland on March 3, 1916. He was a college student for over five years. He immigrated to Israel in 1932, and fought in the Israeli War for Independence in 1948. He relocated to the U.S. in 1956. He worked as a builder for commercial development. He was an active member of Kneseth Israel Congregation. Survivors include a son, Gideon Frishman; two daughters, Margalit Guttman and Yona Kelly of Riva; 6 grandchildren; and 6 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wife, Ida Frishman. Interment was at Kneseth Israel Cemetery under the direction of Hardesty Funeral Home.

GREENSBORO, MARYLAND: Antoni "Tony" Gajda, 88, died November 10, 2001. He was born May 13, 1913 in Poland. He was a self-employed farmer. He was a 1930s veteran the Polish Army. Following World War II, he worked in Frankford, Germany for the U.S. Army, and came to the U.S. in 1951. He is survived by his friends, Glenn and Betty Spiering. Burial was at Greensboro Cemetery.

GALLAGHER, Edward S.
ANNAPOLIS, MARYLAND: Edward S. Gallagher, 93, died August 8, 2006. He was born January 21, 1913 to the late Ernest A. and Ethel Gallagher. He was a 1935 graduate of Lehigh University in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania, where he was a member of Alpha Sigma Phi fraternity. He retired from General Electric after over 30 years of service, and was the owner of E.S. Gallagher and Associates, a manufacturer's sales representative. He enjoyed military history, sailing, model railroading, and collecting toy soldiers. He was a supporter and former scoutmaster of the Boy Scouts of America. He is survived by three sons, Jeffrey Gallagher of Silver Spring, Edward Gallagher of Coshocton, OH, and William Gallagher of Annapolis; and 6 grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wife of 62 years, Germaine M. Gallagher. Arrangements were handled by Hardesty Funeral Home.

HARDING, Rev. Bernard
PIKESVILLE, MARYLAND: Father Bernard Harding, 76, O.SS.T., died December 13, 1997 after surgery at Northwest Hospital Center in Randallstown. He was a Washington, DC native. He studied at Holy Name College and the Catholic University of America. He was a member of the Order of the Most Holy Trinity (Trinitarians) for 57 years, having entered the order at age 19. He had been a priest for 50 years. He was a longtime former pastor at St. Lawrence Catholic Church in Jessup, and had led the Trinitarian Order in the U.S. from 1971 to 1974. He served as both minister provincial and vicar provincial in his order. He was a former associate pastor of St. Ann Catholic Church in Bristol, PA, and St. James Catholic Church in Trenton, NJ. He was active in prison ministries in Jessup and Marion, IL, serving as a Catholic prison chaplain. Survivors include two brothers, Joseph Harding of Olney, and Halite Harding of Gettysburg, PA; and the Trinitarian religious community. Services were held at Holy Trinity Monastery.

GLEN BURNIE, MARYLAND: Albert William Herb, Jr., 60, died November 22, 2005 at his residence. He was born August 30, 1945 in Pensacola, FL. He was a graduate of Calvert Hall College, and had also attended the University of Maryland. He was a firefighter in Baltimore from 1969 to 2004, and also port chief engineer of Fireboat #1. He was a U.S. Army veteran, and served with the Army Reserves until 1997. He was a chief warrant officer and a member of the 949th Transportation Company. He was a member of the American Legion, the Model A Restorers Club, the Greater Baltimore Model A Club of America and the Moose Lodge, and was past president of the SSS Club. He is survived by his wife, Bunny Miller Herb; two daughters, Dawn Burdeaux and Victoria Wilson of Glen Burnie; two sons, Randall Burdeaux and Richard Wilson of Glen Burnie; his mother, Jeanne Herb of Glen Burnie; two sisters, Joyce Smoot and Madonna Copper of Pasadena; two brothers, Douglas Herb, Sr. of Pasadena and Patrick Herb, Sr. of Glen Burnie; and 7 grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his father, Albert Herb, Sr. Services were held at St. Jane Frances de Chantal Catholic Church. Interment was at Glen Haven Memorial Park by Gonce Funeral Service.

HAGERSTOWN, MARYLAND: Reta Virginia Hiett, 90, died January 3, 2010. She was born December 11, 1919 to the late Elbert Conard and Edith Hendricks Conard. She held a degree in home economics from Madison University. She was a dietician at South Baltimore General Hospital, and also taught home economics at Williamsport High School. She was a member of the Maryland State Teachers' Association, the Order of the Eastern Star, and the Daughters of the American Revolution. She attended Hagerstown Presbyterian Church, where she served as a deacon, and was a volunteer at the Washington County Food Bank. She is survived by her husband of 66 years, Kenneth Pershing Hiett; a daughter, Susan Joy Siskind of West Chester, PA; a son, Jan Kenneth Hiett of Hagerstown; a sister, Ruth Conard of Timonium; and 7 grandchildren. She was preceded in death by six siblings. Interment was at Rest Haven Cemetery by Douglas A. Fiery Funeral Home.

ROCKVILLE, MARYLAND: Van Roger Olsen died December 24, 2008. He was born in May 25, 1933 in Sanish, ND, and was raised in Sidney, MT. He was a graduate of the University of Montana, and was a food inspector for the U.S. Army in Hawaii. He was a former president of the U.S. Beet Sugar Association, and was a longtime activist in the sugar industry. He served as chairman of the American Sugar Alliance in 1992, president of the New York Sugar Club in 1995, and was the 2001 Dyer Memorial Award recipient for Sugar Man of the Year. He was politically active, and represented the beet sugar industry at Congress and in international trade issues on behalf of the Beet Sugar Association. He was appointed to the federal Agricultural Technical Advisory Committee. In earlier years, he was chief of staff to Rep. Mark Andrews (R-ND), and helped organize several successful Congressional campaigns. He helped found a nonprofit corporation that operated a halfway house for recovering mental patients. He attended St. Luke's Episcopal Church in Bethesda, and enjoyed crossword puzzles and golf. He is survived by his wife, Myrna Olsen; three children, Matthew Olsen of Rockville, Susan Olsen of Los Angeles, and Jennifer Olsen of San Francisco; two sisters; 5 grandchildren; and other relatives and friends. He was the brother of Bette and Shirley. Services were held at St. Luke Episcopal Church.

ANNAPOLIS, MARYLAND: Roland B. Tayman, 89, died January 3, 2009. He was born April 16, 1919. He was a plumber for over 60 years. He was a decorated U.S. Army veteran of World War II. She was a founding member of Clifton Park Baptist Church, where she served as a Sunday School teacher and a church secretary. Later, she joined Luther Rice Memorial Baptist Church. She circled the Washington Beltway the first day it opened. She is survived by her husband of 63 years, Carey C. Tison; a daughter, Caroline Tison of Silver Spring; two sons and daughters-in-law, Donald and Annette Tison of Fairfax Station, VA, and Dale and Meg Tison of Gaithersburg; a sister-in-law, Catherine Bell of Orangeburg, SC; 4 grandchildren; her nieces and nephews; and several cousins. Services were held at Luther Rice Memorial Baptist Church. Interment was at Arlington National Cemetery.

VanGRACK, Edna
BETHESDA, MARYLAND: Edna Schwartz VanGrack, 82, died November 18, 2007 at her residence. She was born November 19, 1924 in Philadelphia. She was a retired furrier and a lay rabbi. Prior to entering the fur industry, she worked in sales. She was a receptionist at Gartenhaus Furs, and began training in the fur trade from the ground up. She later worked for I. Magnin and Saks Fifth Avenue, returned to Gartenhaus Furs, and then to Saks Jandel. She served as acting lay rabbi from 1984 to 1992 at the Washington Hebrew Congregation. She was a docent at the Smithsonian's National Museum of Natural History, and gave many tours of the museum. She was a volunteer with the Jewish Community Center of Greater Washington, the Jewish Social Service Agency, Ohr Kodesh Congregation in Chevy Chase, and the gift shop at the Hebrew Home of Greater Washington. She served as an election judge in Montgomery County for 20 years, taught English to non-native speakers, and was a former White House volunteer answering Jacqueline Kennedy's mail following the JFK assassination. She is survived by her children and their spouses, Steven and Susan VanGrack; Linda and Harry Snyder; and Jeffrey and Nancy VanGrack; and 8 grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, Irving VanGrack. Services were held at the Washington Hebrew Congregation. Interment was at King David Memorial Garden.
