BANG, Dr. Frederik B.
BALTIMORE, MARYLAND: Dr. Frederik Barry Bang, 64, died October 3, 1981. He was the son of A.F. and Carol Klee Bang, and the grandson of Danish veterinary researcher Bernhard L.F. Bang, who engaged in pivotal research on bovine brucellosis (Bang's disease). Dr. Frederik Bang held a M.D. degree from Johns Hopkins University Medical School. He helped pioneer electron microscopy on viruses, and introduced groundbreaking applications of marine biology to medical research. He served as an officer in the U.S. Army Medical Corps, and directed research on malaria and other tropical diseases in the South Pacific. He was the longtime chair of the Johns Hopkins Department of Pathobiology, serving on the faculty for over 30 years. He was a Fulbright Scholar, a Guggenheim Fellow and a National Research Council Fellow in pathology at the Vanderbilt University Medical School. He was a member of numerous organizations, including the American Institute of Biological Sciences, the American Society of Experimental Pathology, the International Epidemiological Association, the American Association for the Advancement of Science, and the American Society of Clinical Investigation. He was a supporter of the Marine Biological Laboratory at Woods Hole, MA. Survivors include his wife, Betsy Garrett Bang; a son, Axel F. Bang; and two daughters, Molly G. Bang and Caroline Bang. The Frederick Bang Award was established at Johns Hopkins University in his memory.

PIKESVILLE, MARYLAND: Father Bernard Harding, 76, O.SS.T., died December 13, 1997 after surgery at Northwest Hospital Center in Randallstown. He was a Washington, DC native. He studied at Holy Name College and the Catholic University of America. He was a member of the Order of the Most Holy Trinity (Trinitarians) for 57 years, having entered the order at age 19. He had been a priest for 50 years. He was a longtime former pastor at St. Lawrence Catholic Church in Jessup, and had led the Trinitarian Order in the U.S. from 1971 to 1974. He served as both minister provincial and vicar provincial in his order. He was a former associate pastor of St. Ann Catholic Church in Bristol, PA, and St. James Catholic Church in Trenton, NJ. He was active in prison ministries in Jessup and Marion, IL, serving as a Catholic prison chaplain. Survivors include two brothers, Joseph Harding of Olney, and Halite Harding of Gettysburg, PA; and the Trinitarian religious community. Services were held at Holy Trinity Monastery.

He was a graduate of the University of Montana, and was a food inspector for the U.S. Army in Hawaii. He was a former president of the U.S. Beet Sugar Association, and was a longtime activist in the sugar industry. He served as chairman of the American Sugar Alliance in 1992, president of the New York Sugar Club in 1995, and was the 2001 Dyer Memorial Award recipient for Sugar Man of the Year. He was politically active, and represented the beet sugar industry at Congress and in international trade issues on behalf of the Beet Sugar Association. He was appointed to the federal Agricultural Technical Advisory Committee. In earlier years, he was chief of staff to Rep. Mark Andrews (R-ND), and helped organize several successful Congressional campaigns. He helped found a nonprofit corporation that operated a halfway house for recovering mental patients. He attended St. Luke's Episcopal Church in Bethesda, and enjoyed crossword puzzles and golf. He is survived by his wife, Myrna Olsen; three children, Matthew Olsen of Rockville, Susan Olsen of Los Angeles, and Jennifer Olsen of San Francisco; two sisters; 5 grandchildren; and other relatives and friends. She was a founding member of Clifton Park Baptist Church, where she served as a Sunday School teacher and a church secretary. Later, she joined Luther Rice Memorial Baptist Church. She circled the Washington Beltway the first day it opened. She is survived by her husband of 63 years, Carey C. BETHESDA, MARYLAND: Edna Schwartz VanGrack, 82, died November 18, 2007 at her residence. She was born November 19, 1924 in Philadelphia. She was a retired furrier and a lay rabbi. Prior to entering the fur industry, she worked in sales. She was a receptionist at Gartenhaus Furs, and began training in the fur trade from the ground up. She later worked for I. Magnin and Saks Fifth Avenue, returned to Gartenhaus Furs, and then to Saks Jandel. She served as acting lay rabbi from 1984 to 1992 at the Washington Hebrew Congregation. She was a docent at the Smithsonian's National Museum of Natural History, and gave many tours of the museum. She was a volunteer with the Jewish Community Center of Greater Washington, the Jewish Social Service Agency, Ohr Kodesh Congregation in Chevy Chase, and the gift shop at the Hebrew Home of Greater Washington. She served as an election judge in Montgomery County for 20 years, taught English to non-native speakers, and was a former White House volunteer answering Jacqueline Kennedy's mail following the JFK assassination. She is survived by her children and their spouses, Steven and Susan VanGrack; Linda and Harry Snyder; and Jeffrey and Nancy VanGrack; and 8 grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, Irving VanGrack. Services were held at the Washington Hebrew Congregation. Interment was at King David Memorial Garden.
