Home Plate The Marlins reshaped their team when they shipped slugging outfielder
Preston Wilson to Colorado for Juan prior to the 2003 season. Juan was
installed as the team's leadoff hitter and with his league-leading 65
steals, he helped Florida to a National League-best 150 steals. He batted
.305, scored 100 runs and generally caused havoc whenever he came to the
plate. He continued his strong play in the postseason, scoring 12 runs in
17 games while posting a .378 on-base percentage. A 13th-round pick by the
Rockies in 1998, Juan was a three-time minor league all-star. He made his
major league debut in 2000 and the following season he tied for the league
lead in steals (46) and finished second in both hits (202) and triples
(9). Juan uses his speed to full advantage on defense, too. He covers a
lot of ground in the outfield. Last season he had six assists, including
five double plays, an outstanding total for a center fielder. |
