1. News and Notes:
------------------
1a. Using WorldConnect Effectively. First-time visitors to RootsWeb
http://207.68.164.250/cgi-bin/linkrd?_lang=EN&lah=1ad3e000c46733cbef12b72649cc906b&lat=1036072947&hm___action=http%3a%2f%2fwww%2erootsweb%2ecom%2f usually begin a search by typing their
ancestor's surname (last name) or surname and given (first) name into
the search box (metasearch) on the Home Page and proceed from there to
check the various databases found in those search results.

This is an excellent way to begin. However, it should be only the
beginning -- not the end -- of searching at RootsWeb. Another treasure
chest to investigate is what is now the combined RootsWeb WorldConnect/
Ancestry World Tree. It currently totals more than 232 million names.

The main WorldConnect page http://207.68.164.250/cgi-bin/linkrd?_lang=EN&lah=6c570f095428642fff43a33db773dc37&lat=1036072947&hm___action=http%3a%2f%2fworldconnect%2erootsweb%2ecom%2f has a
simple search box for easy access to its Global Search. Type in a name
and click for a "one-step" easy search option that is much like the
metasearch box on the main RootsWeb page, but with the added capability
that supports International characters (umlauts, diacritical marks,
etc.). Use the more advanced search options by clicking on SEARCH ALL
DATABASES or by going directly to the WorldConnect Global Search at:
  http://207.68.164.250/cgi-bin/linkrd?_lang=EN&lah=3798445d9f51a09eb8b06034eb3c6cbc&lat=1036072947&hm___action=http%3a%2f%2fworldconnect%2erootsweb%2ecom%2fcgi%2dbin%2figm%2ecgi

You can search all the databases in WorldConnect using only a surname or
even part of a surname, or search on a field other than the surname
field -- perhaps a "date only" or a "place only" search. Search on any
one field or more than one field. Of course, the fewer fields searched,
the greater number of matches. Searching many fields at once yields
fewer and more specific matches.

For surnames searches, there is a drop-down menu offering the option for
an exact spelling of the name, or a Soundex, or a Metaphone search.
WorldConnect's Global Search allows trailing wildcard matches with a
minimum of three letters followed by an asterisk.

Understanding Soundex, Metaphone, Fuzzy, Special, and Specific Searches:

--SOUNDEX. This produces a four-character code beginning with the first
letter of a surname followed by three numbers assigned according to the
Soundex Coding Guide. Soundex keeps together names with the
same and similar sounds, regardless of spelling. For a detailed
explanation of Soundex, see RootsWeb's Guide To Tracing Family Trees:
  http://207.68.164.250/cgi-bin/linkrd?_lang=EN&lah=62a3c63177e76430c1b47dfed06bf0ef&lat=1036072947&hm___action=http%3a%2f%2frwguide%2erootsweb%2ecom%2flesson9%2ehtm

--METAPHONE. This is an algorithm to code English words phonetically by
reducing them to 16 consonant sounds. It is similar in concept and
purpose to Soundex, but more comprehensive in its approach.

--FUZZY SEARCHES. These are available also. "Fuzzy" in geek-speak means
"not exact." A fuzzy search will find variant spellings by applying the
rules of Soundex (usually reserved for surname searches) to all
WorldConnect fields -- excluding birth and death years.

--SPECIAL SEARCHES. If you are searching for a Native American name,
slave name, royal or nobility names, or other instances where only a
given (first) name is used, you can do such a search in WorldConnect.
Likely you will want to narrow down any "given name only" searches by
including additional known information in your search terms.

--SPECIFIC DATABASES. You can limit your advanced search to a specific
database by starting within it and clicking on the ADVANCED SEARCH link.
Or, if you know the user code for a particular database you wish to
search, enter the user code into the JUMP TO box on the main
WorldConnect page. A user code is a unique file name, such as jcrane4 --
selected by the submitter. It can be comprised of a combination of
numbers, letters, dashes, and/or underscores. To find the user code look
in the search results under the right-hand column, which is labeled
DATABASE. you also will find user codes at the end of the URL (Web
address) of the file (db=user_code). Obtain the user codes for your own
WorldConnect files from Password Central:
http://207.68.164.250/cgi-bin/linkrd?_lang=EN&lah=b09c2fefbd87ae3ae6a5d9b79086ba86&lat=1036072947&hm___action=http%3a%2f%2fpasswordcentral%2erootsweb%2ecom%2f

Refine a search that yields too many results by including more
information -- add a given name, or place of birth and/or death (using
town, county, state, and/or country as your search term). Birth and
death place searches support recognition of two-letter U.S. state
abbreviations and the state's full name -- KS or Kansas. Birth year and
death year are searchable with a drop-down menu with the selections of
exact, plus or minus 1, 2, 5, 10 or 20 years. This gives a range to the
searches of a maximum of 40 years -- 20 years in either direction from
the year you are using as your starting point. Also, you may use a
wildcard with an exact date search. For example, put 187* in the birth
year field to search all years from 1870 through 1879.

Christening dates and/or places will be used automatically if birth
dates and/or places are missing; burial dates and/or places are
substituted in the absence of death dates and/or places. Another option
for searches is on the names of the father, mother, and/or spouse.

You can eliminate matches that contain no data in the birth, death, and/
or marriage place fields when doing a search. Check the boxes marked
"omit blanks." You can check off the boxes for "Has Descendants," "Has
Notes," and/or "Has Sources" to limit searches to individuals with these
fields of information included. But, remember that the more you narrow
the search by adding criteria to match, the greater the chance that you
might exclude a record of interest because it's not an exact match.

It is possible to exclude specific databases from your search (yours or
anyone else's) by entering the user code(s) of the database(s) to be
excluded in the SKIP DATABASE box. Exclude multiple databases by
skipping a single space (no commas or other punctuation) between each
user code.

Use the UPDATED WITHIN drop-down menu to limit your search to databases
that have been uploaded or updated since you last performed a search
(the FOREVER selection is used to search all databases). Check back
often as new databases are added all the time, and old records are
updated daily. Caution: If you are using SKIP DATABASE to skip someone
else's database you might miss updates to their file.

Answers to your brick-wall problems, clues to family mysteries, and
valuable information about your ancestors may be waiting for you at
WorldConnect. All you have to do is find it.

1b. Quick Tips from Readers: Calculating Dates
  Thanks to: Julie Dalton   http://sea2fd.sea2.hotmail.msn.com/cgi-bin/compose?curmbox=F000000001&a=9fdf5efb0543ac308acdaeeae819ed4f&mailto=1&to=jdalton@thedaltongang.com&msg=MSG1036045474.136&start=1446553&len=34657&src=&type=x

Dates were driving me crazy until I found this really cool shareware
program called Date Calculator. Need to figure the date of birth for the
ancestor who died in 1853 at age 33y 4m 21d? What about the age of your
ancestor during the census year? Not only does it add and subtract
dates, but it gives you the day of the week -- really helpful for the
newspaper obits that say she died on Tuesday and was buried on
Wednesday. It calculates dates in Julian, Hebrew, and French Republic as
well as the modern standard, Gregorian calendar. It's available for PC
(Windows) and Macintosh computers.

Posting, Patience, and Perseverance
  By Sharyn Hay   http://sea2fd.sea2.hotmail.msn.com/cgi-bin/compose?curmbox=F000000001&a=9fdf5efb0543ac308acdaeeae819ed4f&mailto=1&to=storkrn@msn.com&msg=MSG1036045474.136&start=1446553&len=34657&src=&type=x

I totally agree that we need to have patience and keep posting until we
get results. The key word here is *relevant*. As a volunteer mailing
list and message board administrator, I would like to offer two tips to
keep your posts relevant and get results.

First, read the message board rules found by clicking a tab at the
bottom of each page. They tell you that there must be a mention of the
surname or locality which is the topic of the board. I have 14 Quebec
boards and often see posts saying "Seeking Jean Dou born somewhere in
Canada," on all of the boards. Those posts belong on the Canada-general
board and not the Quebec boards. If you think Jean was born in Quebec,
say so, and give every detail you know about Jean and the time period
when he may have been in Quebec.

There are dozens of Quebec boards, but a quick search of each will show
if others are asking about your surname in that area. Start with those
boards where the surname occurs, then wait a month or two and try the
other area boards.

Second, do not post identical messages on many different boards. Change
them to fit the board. If Jean DOU married Jeanne ROUX, put him first in
the subject line and put emphasis on him on the DOU board, stating
everything you know about him, especially dates. Reverse that for the
RIOUX board for Jeanne. Remember that the search engine will turn up
every reference to the surname and people do not want to scroll through
25 identical messages about Jean and Jeanne.

Watch the boards where you posted. If the board is small and your
message is on the first two screens, just wait. But if the board is
large and your post is many screens from the beginning, try posting
again with slightly different information.

A Ghostly Encounter
About seven years ago, I was doing some genealogy research on my
2g-grandmother, Mary Conroy. There was a woman I met on the Internet
looking for the same family. When I told her about Mary Conroy, she e-
mailed me asking for info about her. I knew Mary's years of birth and
death, but I didn't have the exact dates in my notes, so I decided to
jump in my car and drive to the cemetery where she was buried.

This was in Wisconsin and it was the first week of December. It began to
snow lightly. The sun had just gone down, and the sky had turned a deep
shade of blue, but it was still bright enough to see. I left my car
running and the headlights on. Mary's gravestone was near the side of
the road, so I didn't have to walk very far. I remember walking in front
of the car and kneeling at her gravestone, taking out my pen and paper
and I began writing.

As I was kneeling there, heard someone walking on the pavement behind
me. I thought nothing of it because people walk through that cemetery
all the time. I was still facing the gravestone when I heard the
footsteps getting closer and closer to the point that the person
was standing right behind me. I stood up and turned around to say hello
to the person, and THERE WAS NO ONE THERE!

I wasn't dreaming, was totally awake, but there was no one around. I
looked around and inside my car (worried that someone might have been
trying to take the car), but there was no one. I yelled out, "Hello,
anybody there?". There was silence. I said to myself, "I'm getting out
of here" and I jumped in my car and drove home really fast.

I got on the computer and e-mailed the woman, telling her everything
that had happened. She told me that it was ironic that I should mention
something like this happening, because every time she sat down to do
genealogy work, she felt as if someone were standing behind her and
watching her.

I have only been back to the cemetery three or four times since then,
but never again by myself.

Specificity, Please
Last week's RWR had an article on researchers who feel "invisible" The
reason, in some cases, is that the original request is far too vague.
Speaking as someone who is building up a database on the surname ARNOT
and variants, I have several thousands of individuals included, so that
in self-defence am unlikely to reply about a "John ARNOT" in the absence
of any date or context. Similarly a reply that is out of sync with an
original posting is not going to attract my attention, instead it
suggests (however erroneously) that the person replying cannot be
bothered to do anything themselves. The Web should assist our searches,
not substitute for them.

So could someone point out gently that it is necessary to be specific,
and give a little idea of the sources that have been accessed already;
if the enquirer is still floundering a year later then try again as like
it or not an old query may not come to attention again even though I may
have extra information.
  --Gillian M. Arnot Smith   http://sea2fd.sea2.hotmail.msn.com/cgi-bin/compose?curmbox=F000000001&a=9fdf5efb0543ac308acdaeeae819ed4f&mailto=1&to=gillian@arnotsmith.id.au&msg=MSG1036045474.136&start=1446553&len=34657&src=&type=x

Posting Perfect Family Trees
I totally agree with Alan White (last week's RWR) regarding the posting
of inaccurate information on the Web in the form of a family tree.
However,  if somebody had not posted their information on the Web, I
would not be on the trail of my grandfather's ancestors, and I would not
have found the umpteen cousins that I would not have otherwise have
known about.

I have copied a lot of information from the Web, a lot of it from
relatives so distant I don't know why I have included them, and have
noticed a lot of inconsistencies, but I take all the information with a
grain of salt and if in doubt will research the Web and compare
information on other websites (surprising how many results you get with
a simple name search), and make a note as to where I got the information
that I am using. If something else's seems reasonable, I will make a
note of it.

I am researching a situation where my grandfather's father was involved
with three women (two sisters) and had upwards of 23 children with them
all.  Try tracing all of them with or without a paper trail, which I
also take with a grain of salt, due to the varying methods of spelling
Stewart.

Posting incorrect information is not right but as long as the researcher
understands that undocumented information, even on a website like
RootsWeb, should be taken with a grain of salt, and if possible traced
back to original paper trail.
  --Betsy Stewart   http://sea2fd.sea2.hotmail.msn.com/cgi-bin/compose?curmbox=F000000001&a=9fdf5efb0543ac308acdaeeae819ed4f&mailto=1&to=bstewart8@cogeco.ca&msg=MSG1036045474.136&start=1446553&len=34657&src=&type=x

Peering into the Past
I would like to disagree with Alan White who recently wrote about not
posting errors. The problem isn't that there are errors in research, the
problem is most people are not posting their sources. If I copy someone
else's research, I note it as such and usually that it is unchecked. To
me it is my best lead. When I check it, then I add the other sources or
heave it if it is wrong. If it is wrong then I often notify the
incorrect source. Often others check it before I get around to it,
saving me time.

The past can be mighty murky and the more eyes we have looking, the
better we see into it.

8. RootsWeb's November Volunteer Spotlight. Since the end of Volunteer
Appreciation Month in April, RootsWeb.com has continued to show its
gratitude to volunteers by completing a new spotlight each month. We
realize that the individuals who were mentioned by name are only a
fraction of those who continue to donate their time and talents to
RootsWeb. So appreciating our volunteers has not come to end. Each month
we plan to spotlight another volunteer who has given so much to the
genealogy community.

For the month of November, RootsWeb will spotlight Dalice Fadden, who
continually makes a tremendous impact on those using the Message Boards
to locate their Pennsylvanian relatives. Visit our Volunteer Spotlight
Page Friday (November 1) to learn more about Dalice.

I have to travel, quite frequently, to Rochester, New York and never
tire of chuckling when I go through a small town, I think it is
Henrietta, and see the sign on a funeral home there.

Believe it or not, the sign says, "Amigone Funeral Parlor." I have to
wonder how many bodies raise up and say, "Amigone yet?"
