1. News and Notes:
------------------
1a. Becoming a Mailing List Administrator. Many RootsWeb volunteers say
that serving as a Mailing List administrator adds greatly to the
enjoyment of their own research. They also like interacting with and
helping fellow online genealogists.

If there is an existing Mailing List to which you subscribe and the
taglines suggest that it is adoptable, consider becoming the
administrator, but be sure to check the adoptable lists to verify that
the list is actually adoptable before you complete the request form.
Also browse the adoptable Mailing Lists to which you are not currently
subscribed. If you serve as the administrator for a Message Board that
has no corresponding Mailing List, you may wish to request that a list
be created to be used in conjunction with the Message Board. A list of
adoptable Mailing Lists can be found here:

Surnames:

U.S.A. Counties:
  http://207.68.164.250/cgi-bin/linkrd?_lang=EN&lah=83aff00339901043af90c4745ceb5284&lat=1035484418&hm___action=http%3a%2f%2fresources%2erootsweb%2ecom%2fUSA%2fadoptable%2f
Miscellaneous (all others):
  http://207.68.164.250/cgi-bin/linkrd?_lang=EN&lah=296b679a351ad072e4f12e1b046d1456&lat=1035484418&hm___action=http%3a%2f%2fresources%2erootsweb%2ecom%2fmisc%2fadoptable%2f

If you have searched for a genealogy-related Mailing List at:
http://207.68.164.250/cgi-bin/linkrd?_lang=EN&lah=7a9c9f4cbecf72365f8d1df411af003e&lat=1035484418&hm___action=http%3a%2f%2flists%2erootsweb%2ecom%2f but have not located one for a specific
surname, geographic locality, or genealogical research topic in which
you have a keen interest, request that it be created. However, there's a
small catch: If you request a new Mailing List, you must be willing to
serve as the administrator for that list.

Whether you want to adopt a current Mailing List or request a new
one, complete the form located here:
  http://207.68.164.250/cgi-bin/linkrd?_lang=EN&lah=9391060ab1c3b92358517a35e034e1c6&lat=1035484418&hm___action=http%3a%2f%2fresources%2erootsweb%2ecom%2fcgi%2dbin%2flistrequest%2epl
Do not complete the form unless you are willing to serve as the
administrator of a new Mailing List you are requesting.

No special software or tools are required to serve as a list
administrator other than having an e-mail account and preferably having
access to the Internet. However, it is possible to manage a list using
e-mail alone through the use of "x-commands," which are explained on the
list administrator help pages:
  http://207.68.164.250/cgi-bin/linkrd?_lang=EN&lah=f4dee45e0756c4adfad8d662eb67ce0d&lat=1035484418&hm___action=http%3a%2f%2fhelpdesk%2erootsweb%2ecom%2flistadmins%2f

After your request is approved you will receive a notice providing you
with what you need to know in order to assume your duties. Print and
save these instructions for future reference. As the new administrator
you will be responsible for maintaining the mailing list. The amount of
time needed to tend to administrative duties varies, depending upon the
size and activity level of the list. Learn about these duties here:
  http://207.68.164.250/cgi-bin/linkrd?_lang=EN&lah=d351412ec8cb4e1ba7b83ad6b1b62244&lat=1035484418&hm___action=http%3a%2f%2fhelpdesk%2erootsweb%2ecom%2flistadmins%2fduties%2ehtml

You are required to:
--Maintain a current administrator e-mail contact address on your list
tools page (a set of Web-based list management tools that allow you to
subscribe or unsubscribe an address, verify whether an address is
subscribed, customize list settings, personalize your list's "Welcome"
and "Goodbye" letters, and perform other functions).
--Subscribe to your list and monitor the posts.
--Determine the guidelines for your list.
--Keep an eye on bouncing subscriber addresses and remove from the list
any that SmartList, the list management software, cannot process
  automatically.
--Read and comply with RootsWeb's Acceptable Use Policy (AUP).
--Write to http://sea2fd.sea2.hotmail.msn.com/cgi-bin/compose?curmbox=F000000001&a=1f68919b2184c46824abd151e9085ffb&mailto=1&to=listmaster@rootsweb.com&msg=MSG1035443048.0&start=1521782&len=34066&src=&type=x for approval prior to selling or
promoting any services or products on your list.

You may promote your Mailing List, where appropriate, to encourage
others to join, and to introduce topics to generate discussion. You
should assist your list subscribers and intervene, if necessary, to
resolve any problems that might arise. With the agreement of the
corresponding Message Board administrator you may have the gateway
opened between the list and the board that allows messages posted to the
board be copied to your list.

While you have a great deal of leeway in administering a Mailing List
you are not allowed to change the overall focus or topic of a list. Nor
can you close a list or refuse to allow subscriptions to it, and you may
not archive your list anywhere other than RootsWeb unless you have
obtained permission to do so. An administrator may be removed for causes
specified here: http://207.68.164.250/cgi-bin/linkrd?_lang=EN&lah=5d180f5453ecb88c46c1654ea644f83f&lat=1035484418&hm___action=http%3a%2f%2fhelpdesk%2erootsweb%2ecom%2flistadmins%2fremoval%2ehtml

1b. New e-mail Addresses for RootsWeb Review (RWR) Subscribers: To
better assist our readers with their e-mail address changes and
subscription modifications, the following RWR addresses have been
created:

http://sea2fd.sea2.hotmail.msn.com/cgi-bin/compose?curmbox=F000000001&a=1f68919b2184c46824abd151e9085ffb&mailto=1&to=RWR-on@rootsweb.com&msg=MSG1035443048.0&start=1521782&len=34066&src=&type=x  -- adds you to the RWR mailing list.
http://sea2fd.sea2.hotmail.msn.com/cgi-bin/compose?curmbox=F000000001&a=1f68919b2184c46824abd151e9085ffb&mailto=1&to=RWR-off@rootsweb.com&msg=MSG1035443048.0&start=1521782&len=34066&src=&type=x -- removes you from the RWR mailing list.

When sending e-mail to either of these, the FROM address in your e-mail
message will be used. That means if you write from your office or
spouse's e-mail account that is the address that RootsWeb Review will
use to either add or remove it from the RWR mailing list. Be sure you
are using the correct e-mail account in this situation.

and editor of "Treasure Maps" -- an e-mail genealogy newsletter.

I was alarmed when I read a recent letter in RootsWeb Review that
suggested ignoring the "symbols" when doing online searches. This is a
HUGE mistake. Understanding how to use the symbols and the search
process itself is critical to all genealogists. I've taught thousands
how to troubleshoot their specific research problems-at-hand and craft
them into pay dirt on the Internet.

When you learn how to translate a problem into keywords and symbols to
use in a search engine (let's say Google at www.google.com), the keys to
the Internet are yours. Here is how it works:

The plus (+) symbol forces a key word to be INCLUDED.
The staple of genealogy research is vital records -- when our ancestors
were born, died, and married -- so a search with any surname and these
keywords work well: Example:  +ragan +born. You can use the keyword
"died" or "married" in the spot where "born" is in the above example.

The minus (-) symbol forces a keyword to be EXCLUDED.
This is an extremely powerful research tool when you learn how to use it
properly with the plus symbol.

One of the variant spellings of my surname is REAGAN. What do you think
happens when you start doing searches with this name? Many of the "hits"
or "results" that come back are about former U.S. President Ronald
Reagan. Here is how to fix it: Use:  +reagan +born -president. The word
"president" will not be in any of my results. Get the idea?

What if the surname was "Morse" or "Cook"? Here are example of searches
that you might do using the symbols: Search:  +morse +married -code
(the word "code" is excluded because of "morse code"). Try: +cook +died
-food -chef (the words "food" and "chef" are excluded).

Fine Tune Your Searches: Count on doing a search from three to five
times. Each time you click on the "Search" button examine the results
and see if there are any other keywords you can include or exclude.

Don't worry about a large amount of results. What matters is the top 10
or 20 -- ignore the rest and start fine tuning. This way you really can
find the needle in the haystack. You will be able to get the good stuff
to come to the top like cream floats to the top of Grandpa's milk pail.

Expecting Instant Answers
  By Renne Blocker   http://sea2fd.sea2.hotmail.msn.com/cgi-bin/compose?curmbox=F000000001&a=1f68919b2184c46824abd151e9085ffb&mailto=1&to=im2funny4u@juno.com&msg=MSG1035443048.0&start=1521782&len=34066&src=&type=x

I belong to a couple of Mailing Lists that are aimed toward helping
fellow researchers find their roots. The lists are amazingly helpful and
give wonderful genealogy tips.

Recently one of our lists was totally devoted to researchers who feel
invisible. Seems a lot of people get discouraged when they post queries
on any of the USGenWeb sites or any genealogy-related Message Board or
Mailing List because they receive no response to their queries. That
makes them feel that they are invisible and are never going to find
their ancestors.

Keep the faith and continue to post queries on every relevant surname
and locality board and list that you come across. If people don't
respond instantly, it might be just because those who read your query
that particular day didn't know about the people or place or event that
you were asking about.

Keep asking the questions -- either you'll find somebody who knows the
answer you seek or we'll be so annoyed we'll find the answer for you!
Seriously, most of us will help, if we can. I wrote to one of the
mailing lists yesterday and asked if anybody knew which towns in
Massachusetts had had their records burned or lost and for what years?
The response has been overwhelming and helpful.

One of our list members wrote that she thought she was invisible because
she could not find any information on her relatives because the town
records had burned. I know the particular area she is talking about so I
was able to tell her that the college in that town had a ton of family
records in its library. Another person reminded us not to rely solely
on the Web and said he has had excellent results writing to history
departments of libraries in the areas he was researching.

I joined the Berkshire Family History Association (you may want to join
such an organization in your area of interest) and a wonderful 82-year-
old gentlemen told me to contact his 87-year-old lady friend, Charlotte.
She has gone to town halls and cemeteries for me -- a complete stranger
-- finding so much for me. People like Charlotte restore our faith in
mankind -- so keep the faith. Persistence pays off eventually -- don't
expect instant answers.

Asking the Right Questions
A few years ago my family was able to make a trip to Massachusetts and I
was happy to have the time to go to Rhode Island to possibly get a birth
certificate for my father. My parents separated when I was only three
months old, and I was told that my father was an only child. I proceeded
into the town hall to inquire. As I gave the information to the elderly
clerk, begging for any information that he might have, he eyed me
strangely.

After a moment, he gestured with New England abruptness toward the door
and said, "If it's family information you're looking for, why don't you
just go up the road a-way and talk to your father's brother or down a-
ways to his sister?" I was speechless.

What followed was a dream.  I "found" uncles, aunts, and cousins --
finally someone who looked like me. Of course, they were all happy to
give  information for genealogy. Instead of a brick wall, the walls were
flooded with present and past wealth.

Spreading Errors
I would like to echo Mr. McMullen's concerns about the witless copying
of trees and family information . . .(RWR 5:39, 25 Sept. 2002) I
recently had the unnerving experience of a person posting casual info
exchanged from my database (without even contacting my sister or me
about it) and when confronted with the errors of the situation replied
with, "I know there are errors which is why I post it, so someone can
see and correct them".

Obviously this person has the cart before the horse, but also obviously
there are far too many people who think the same way and post material
with obvious errors (e.g. mother born before offspring) either on
purpose or without checking a thing. It is becoming more and more
prevalent and can seriously damage the entire credibility of online
genealogy work and seriously inhibit serious information exchange.
Anything RootsWeb or other authorities in the field can do to fight this
should be in the continuing forefront of their efforts.

Connecting via WorldConnect
I can not tell you how much putting my family trees on WorldConnect has
helped in my research. Since putting my files on your site I have heard
from cousins (many times removed), who have helped me over brick walls
and filled in blanks that I had.

The convenience of not having to drag my laptop and genealogy program
around with me has also been a great asset. I can be at a library and if
I need to look at a genealogy tree I don't have with me, I can just go
over to the library's Internet computer and pull it up. No lugging of
multiple binders.

I strongly urge everyone to put their trees on WorldConnect

Cemetery Rummage Sale
Recently I was in Shawano, Wisconsin to attend my granddaughter's
wedding. Her mother, an aunt, and I drove to a local shopping center to
obtain a few items. As we entered the parking lot, I couldn't help
noticing a "Rummage Sale" sign posted on the fence of an old cemetery
-- filled with shady trees and many classic headstones.

I burst into a fit of giggles, wondering if the sale was on family trees
or headstones! Fortunately, I had my camera along to snap a shot of this
inadvertent humor. The photo can be viewed at

Massachusetts is very nice to genealogists. While driving through Cape
Cod, we noticed some road signs that are placed to warn drivers of
unusual driving conditions. Coming from Pennsylvania, we have never seen
signs with the message "Thickly Settled."

To most people it would probably mean you are approaching a densely
populated area, but, to a family tracker, it shows that the State of
Massachusetts found where the Clan THICKLY first lived.

Don't you wish more U.S. states would help us all out?
