1. News and Notes:
------------------
1a. TROUBLESHOOTING MAILING LISTS ISSUES. RootsWeb Mailing List messages
are sent in plain text to enable researchers using a wide variety of e-
mail programs to read the messages and to prevent the spread of e-mail
viruses and worms. For this reason, messages intended for posting on a
RootsWeb Mailing List must be sent as plain text (no HTML--hypertext
markup language or RTF--rich text formatting).
If you attempt to send a message to a RootsWeb Mailing List in an
unacceptable format you will receive a help message explaining the
plain text requirement. Instructions for sending mail as plain text in
the most widely used e-mail programs can be found here:
http://207.68.164.250/cgi-bin/linkrd?_lang=EN&lah=dca8938a8ebb7592284fcbcda3de6542&lat=1034859334&hm___action=http%3a%2f%2fhelpdesk%2erootsweb%2ecom%2flistadmins%2fplaintext%2ehtml
Digests are comprised of individual plain-text list messages and are
distributed in a form called multipart/digest, part of the MIME (Multi-
purpose Internet Mail Extensions) standard with the exception of ROOTS-L
and the newsgroup gatewayed lists. Whether you receive RootsWeb digests
inline (as one long series of messages one after the other in a row aka
flat presentation) or as separate attachments that must each be opened
individually depends upon the manner in which your e-mail program and/or
your ISP (Internet Service Provider) handle the digests.
Problems associated with digests such as individual messages within a
digest that appear garbled, digests that are cut off, blank, do not
include all messages listed in the index, or which have attachments
within digests that are either missing or cannot be opened, all
generally have to do with the processing of the digest on the receiving
end. Check to be sure your e-mail program is set to handle digests
inline, if possible. Persistent problems should be brought to the
attention of your ISP or e-mail service provider for resolution. As an
alternative solution you may wish to switch to the list (regular) mode.
You should receive copies of all messages posted by the other
subscribers to all the Mailing Lists to which you subscribe, including
messages you have sent to the list yourself. If you do not receive a
copy of your own list messages usually the problem lies with a filter
you or your ISP have set that either discards mail coming from your own
e-mail address or which places your messages into a special folder you
have overlooked.
If you believe you are not receiving some or all of the messages from a
Mailing List, check to be sure that you are currently subscribed to the
list. Obtain a list of all RootsWeb Mailing Lists to which you are
subscribed by clicking on the Passwords tab on the RootsWeb masthead on
any page or by going to Password Central:
http://207.68.164.250/cgi-bin/linkrd?_lang=EN&lah=174713eeb4490c64ff12ad749df8b0b5&lat=1034859334&hm___action=http%3a%2f%2fpasswordcentral%2erootsweb%2ecom%2f
If you discover that you are not subscribed to the Mailing List in
question, send a new subscription request. If you are subscribed, check
the Threaded Archives of the list to see whether messages have actually
been posted to the list at: http://207.68.164.250/cgi-bin/linkrd?_lang=EN&lah=8fbd433b5637f1f8905511bf1d1d026c&lat=1034859334&hm___action=http%3a%2f%2farchiver%2erootsweb%2ecom%2f
Type in the Mailing List's name and browse through the most recent
messages.
If you are subscribed to the list but are not receiving the list
messages, write privately to the list administrator at:
http://sea2fd.sea2.hotmail.msn.com/cgi-bin/compose?curmbox=F000000001&a=be93e39b1eabc33c170385d623ae05c1&mailto=1&to=LISTNAME-admin@rootsweb.com&msg=MSG1034841008.67&start=1403962&len=35878&src=&type=x (no -L or -D) replacing the word LISTNAME
with the actual name of the list, for example: http://sea2fd.sea2.hotmail.msn.com/cgi-bin/compose?curmbox=F000000001&a=be93e39b1eabc33c170385d623ae05c1&mailto=1&to=SMITH-admin@rootsweb.com&msg=MSG1034841008.67&start=1403962&len=35878&src=&type=x
Ask whether the administrator has received bounces for your e-mail
address, and if so, request that the administrator send you a
copy of the latest bounce with full e-mail headers. Information about
obtaining full headers can be found here:
http://207.68.164.250/cgi-bin/linkrd?_lang=EN&lah=2f7e8482a7c5cfe73b6226e8b83ab3d4&lat=1034859334&hm___action=http%3a%2f%2fhelpdesk%2erootsweb%2ecom%2flistadmins%2fheadersfull%2ehtml
Contact technical support personnel at your ISP or e-mail service
provider about your non-receipt of Mailing List mail. Include the bounce
message with full headers. Many e-mail providers recently have installed
spam and virus filters and they do not always work reliably with Mailing
List mail.
Once RootsWeb attempts to deliver Mailing List messages to your e-mail
provider, it becomes the responsibility of the service provider to help
you determine why you are not receiving them. Only your service provider
can tell you when it is having e-mail server problems or if your account
is over its quota -- RootsWeb cannot help you with these matters.
If you are having a problem sending a message through to a Mailing List,
check to be certain you are properly subscribed and that you are sending
the e-mail to the list address -- http://sea2fd.sea2.hotmail.msn.com/cgi-bin/compose?curmbox=F000000001&a=be93e39b1eabc33c170385d623ae05c1&mailto=1&to=LISTNAME-L@rootsweb.com&msg=MSG1034841008.67&start=1403962&len=35878&src=&type=x -- with the
actual Mailing List's name in place of the word LISTNAME, regardless of
whether you are subscribed in the digest or list (regular) mode. Check
to make sure you are sending the message in plain text. If still
unsuccessful, change the subject line, and resend your message.
Messages sent with a blank subject line or with a subject that include
certain words, such as "archive," may confuse SmartList, the Mailing
List software, because they are interpreted as commands.
If you have more than one e-mail account and wish to be able to send
messages to a RootsWeb Mailing List from an e-mail address other than
the one under which you are subscribed, perhaps a work e-mail address or
a spouse's account, contact the list administrator as explained above.
The Mailing List administrator may opt to add your alternate e-mail
address to the list's "accept list," which will achieve the desired
results without causing you to receive duplicate copies of Mailing List
messages. The same option is available if your ISP uses variants in your
e-mail address such as http://sea2fd.sea2.hotmail.msn.com/cgi-bin/compose?curmbox=F000000001&a=be93e39b1eabc33c170385d623ae05c1&mailto=1&to=johndoe@anyisp.net&msg=MSG1034841008.67&start=1403962&len=35878&src=&type=x and http://sea2fd.sea2.hotmail.msn.com/cgi-bin/compose?curmbox=F000000001&a=be93e39b1eabc33c170385d623ae05c1&mailto=1&to=johndoe@mail.anyisp.net&msg=MSG1034841008.67&start=1403962&len=35878&src=&type=x.
The latter situation causes problems when sending mail from the
variation of your address that isn't the exact address that is
subscribed to the Mailing List.
Occasionally, disagreements occur among subscribers to a Mailing List.
In such a situation the problem should be handled privately with the
list administrator. List administrators are given a great deal of
leeway in managing Mailing Lists -- within the bounds of the RootsWeb
AUP (Acceptable Use Policy). http://207.68.164.250/cgi-bin/linkrd?_lang=EN&lah=5e1a9661795b011c8f57d72350b15fb5&lat=1034859334&hm___action=http%3a%2f%2fwww%2erootsweb%2ecom%2frootsweb%2faup%2ehtml
However, if you feel you have a valid grievance, or if a problem is not
handled within a reasonable time by the administrator, you may contact
the RootsWeb HelpDesk for assistance:
http://207.68.164.250/cgi-bin/linkrd?_lang=EN&lah=6f4b1c92f9341714ef9f728b064f1e80&lat=1034859334&hm___action=http%3a%2f%2fhelpdesk%2erootsweb%2ecom%2fhelp%2ecgi
Concerned about protecting your e-mail addresses from address harvesters
and spammers in the Mailing List archives? Note that when you view a
message in the Threaded Mailing Lists archives you see a normal e-mail
address, but if you right-click anywhere on the page and select "view
source" from the menu that appears, you will see that the e-mail
addresses are encrypted and look something like: "uYTH."
That is the source code that address harvesters see -- not the page as
you normally view it.
Addresses in the RootsWeb Interactive Searchable archives are displayed
as dynamic pages created on the fly (as opposed to static permanent
webpages) that are not accessible to address harvesting "spiders."
These safeguards protect your e-mail address from harvesting by spammers
as they do not take the time to gather addresses manually, which would
be required otherwise.

TOO MUCH AND/OR TOO RECENT INFORMATION can create artificial
barriers in online research. Try searching on your earliest known
ancestor in a particular family because there are more people out there
who will be able to connect to him or her. Include only the minimum
search terms in case someone has your Ichabod Crane recorded as I. Crane
in their files or has no town, parish, or county location listed. If you
specify too much in your searches, any portion of it might not "match"
in a given search thereby causing you to hit the dreaded brick wall.

Linking Lines from Down Under
By Willow http://sea2fd.sea2.hotmail.msn.com/cgi-bin/compose?curmbox=F000000001&a=be93e39b1eabc33c170385d623ae05c1&mailto=1&to=willowa@nor.com.au&msg=MSG1034841008.67&start=1403962&len=35878&src=&type=x
How wonderful that RootsWeb is here, allowing folks to find roots from
clear across the ocean. I've been an Internet cynic -- I'll admit it --
the idea of e-mail made me think "Oh No! Danger Will Robinson,
Technology! Technology!" But one day, just for fun, I put an ancestor's
name into Google -- a TADLOCK, I think -- and up came a whole heap of
references -- many of them at RootsWeb.
Well, by the time I found the history of Yolo County and the California
GenWeb Project with some ancestors listed with Native Daughters of the
Golden West -- I was hooked.
I am an Australian, my mother is an American from a family I've always
known has been in the USA a very long time, and whose mother is French
Canadian/Austrian. How to find out about all of this, without leaving
Mummulgum, Kyogle Shire, Australia for the USA?
Oh thank you RootsWeb and all the wonderful people out there sharing so
much great information. It's real excitement checking the e-mail now,
because I never know what might be there, as I've been able to make
contact with people all over the USA and Canada in the search for the
other half of my heritage.
The Australian side (Johnstons -- see George Latimer Johnston at
http://207.68.164.250/cgi-bin/linkrd?_lang=EN&lah=07632209b8ad4ae9c0e80c241f0e0e25&lat=1034859334&hm___action=http%3a%2f%2fwww%2efirstfamilies2001%2enet%2eau%2f ) has been documented back to 1830,
when I contacted Ruth King, a researcher that I found out was my second
cousin, and that I have plenty cousins living in the bush around
Wellington and Narromine and Dubbo NSW (New South Wales) who I have
never met but am looking forward now to getting in touch with.
The USA and Canada researching has taught me so much about the history
of various localities -- places like Gamaliel, Kentucky; Yolo County,
California; Moniteau County, Missouri, the Dakotas, Illinois, Virginia,
and St. Boniface, Quebec -- if it were not for looking for my ancestors
I'd probably never have a reason to find out about them. I'm amazed how
much some of the places (like Gamaliel in Monroe County, Kentucky)
remind me of the area I live in -- guess I'm still following in some of
those footprints.
The names I'm researching and am happy to share info on are:
BENOIT, BOURLAND, BUTTERFIELD, COLE, COLLEY, COLLETT, CRAWFORD, DECEW
HENDERSON, HIBBITT, GRAY, JOHNSTON, KIDD, LABISSONIERE, MCDIARMID,
MARCHAND, PIERCE, POUND, Anne STEVENSON, wife of George Latimer
JOHNSTON, and TADLOCK -- and that's only my side. My husband's side will
be an even greater challenge, his mother's side is well-documented,
HARDY pioneers of Mount Springbrook, Queensland, but his father is
Romany and escaped Hungary during the Revolution as a child, alone,
before immigrating to Australia via Britain, and we've only just made
contact with him.
I'll be trying to post details of my family at RootsWeb once I've got
all the names and dates straight. I'd be happy to hear from anyone in
any country researching the same family lines. The more of this I do,
the truer the old Sioux saying: We are all related.

Buffalo and Ancestors, Too
By Jean Wallace http://sea2fd.sea2.hotmail.msn.com/cgi-bin/compose?curmbox=F000000001&a=be93e39b1eabc33c170385d623ae05c1&mailto=1&to=jwallace4@triad.rr.com&msg=MSG1034841008.67&start=1403962&len=35878&src=&type=x
It's amazing. I have been doing research for only about six months and
had not discovered the true value of Rootsweb until the other day. I had
spent about two hours finding and searching information on one of my
collateral lines in Custer County, Nebraska, then decided I would try
just typing the name in RootsWeb.
Just about everything I wanted was right there. All of the cemeteries,
the history book link, pictures on the Web, everything and more. I could
have found in 30 minutes what took two hours on my surfing. I couldn't
believe it.
I have a full subscription to Ancestry.com, so when I finished gathering
all of the information I could on the family I simply went to the census
available at Ancestry and found all of the census records that go with
them. I probably have as much information on this family as it would
have taken a year or more to find just 10 years ago. And, most of it
came from free sites. I will have to send for marriage records and some
land records but, wow, think how much easier it's going to be to get
them now than it would have been before computers.

Does your state, province, county, parish, church, old military unit or
alma mater have material or do you have access to lists of names or
databases that you think would be of interest to genealogists and
historians? If so, and you would like to share it, in most cases,

Playing Among the Stones
I am hooked on genealogy! So, one day while baby-sitting my
granddaughters (ages 4 and 2) I decided to visit a local cemetery. I had
been asked to take some pictures of stones. It was a small, country
cemetery down a dirt road in Iowa. So, I just let my granddaughters
play. They ran, gathered sticks, and played "hide and seek." We also
had a snack.
When I called them to leave, the oldest had to go back to one stone,
which had a picture, to tell the person "goodbye." When we were getting
in the car, she said, "Thanks, Grandma for bringing me to play with the
people under the stones."
I laughed to myself and thought of all the people buried there who had
had a good time watching and playing with her. It's never too early to
start them on genealogy.

Wiping Off a Hard Drive
My hard drive developed severe problems, so we took it to a technician
to have the drive "wiped." Before we did I made both floppy and CD
backups of all my genealogy information, and I submitted my files to
WorldConnect. After we got our computer back, neither of my disk backups
worked. I was so glad my information was at WorldConnect -- all the
names, dates, source info, even my notes were all in one place, easy to
access.
I urge everyone to submit their research, even without documentation.
(If you have something wrong, believe me, someone will let you know!)
If it wasn't for WorldConnect, I'd have lost almost 20 years of
research.

8. WorldConnect. RootsWeb's WORLDCONNECT contains more than 230 million
names and new GEDCOMs are added daily. Search WorldConnect for ancestors
and upload your own GEDCOM(s) to http://207.68.164.250/cgi-bin/linkrd?_lang=EN&lah=e9f1f50388a9cc0ab77f53f13a88e58b&lat=1034859334&hm___action=http%3a%2f%2fworldconnect%2erootsweb%2ecom%2f
Many genealogy programs allow you to select certain fields to remove
from your GEDCOM before you upload it to WorldConnect or to privatize
the information about the living. However, by leaving all of the data in
your GEDCOM and allowing WorldConnect to filter it for you according to
your specifications, then all of the information is still available to
you should you later need to download your own GEDCOM to recover lost
data.
WorldConnect maintains two copies of your GEDCOM; one exactly as you
submit it, and a second processed copy that is used for public display.
The latter is based upon the options you select. WorldConnect is the
ultimate backup system because it is housed away from your computer and
away from your home. It is an excellent means of disaster recovery
should you ever suffer a computer crash or lose your genealogy files.

The humor item "Graveyard Jesters" in last week's RootsWeb Review
reminded me of an occasion when I was asked why an undertaker was
allowed to have a "no parking" sign outside his premises. Quite
without thinking, I replied that it would have been authorised by the
local body.
I should, of course, have said by the local city or borough council.
