1. NEWS AND NOTES
-----------------

1a. GLITCHES AND SNAGS. RootsWeb is still experiencing glitches here and
there due to the recent move to new servers. As a result there might be
times when you will be unable to access portions of the site or find
that some areas are not working normally. These include mailing lists,
its archiver program, various search engines, and problems with the
gateway between message boards and mailing lists. Your patience is
greatly appreciated. For any late, breaking news or problems, see:
   http://216.32.180.250/cgi-bin/linkrd?_lang=EN&lah=e20a2d0d887d03e2790a495d192a9510&lat=1027048669&hm___action=http%3a%2f%2fhelpdesk%2erootsweb%2ecom

1b. SOCIAL SECURITY DEATH INDEX (SSDI). No, it is not been updated
recently because the programmers have been too busy with the move to new
servers. RootsWeb usually receives the monthly SSDI update from Social
Security Administration about five or six weeks after a month ends -- it
does not arrive at RootsWeb on the first day of the following month.

1c. MESSAGE BOARD SOLUTIONS. Have you posted a message on a
RootsWeb/Ancestry Message Board http://216.32.180.250/cgi-bin/linkrd?_lang=EN&lah=93e891f4302f055d74c2162f6942455d&lat=1027048669&hm___action=http%3a%2f%2fboards%2erootsweb%2ecom%2f
some time ago that might be in need of editing or updating? Perhaps you
have learned additional information and no longer need the answer to the
query you posted, or you've found out the information you originally
posted was in error and wish to have it removed? Perhaps your e-mail
address has change, or you have undergone a name change due to marriage
or divorce. Whatever the reason, here's how to update or remove a
message that you posted.

For messages where you have obtained an answer to your original query,
instead of requesting that your message be removed, post a follow-up
response to your original message. While viewing the message, click on
POST REPLY and list the additional information you have obtained.
Be sure to include any new query that may have resulted from your
discovery of new information. Posting an update informs anyone who finds
your original message and response that you no longer need the answer to
the original query, provides them with the data you have learned should
it be of interest to them, and also allows them to add information in
the form of a new response to any new query you may have added.

To correct a message--if you have learned that the information included
in your original message is incorrect or perhaps you discover you listed
the wrong ancestor (easy to get all those Williams confused) and are no
longer interested in researching the line, post a reply to the original
message as indicated above noting the corrections in your reply. Another
option is to click REPORT ABUSE while viewing the message to have the
original message removed. State your reasons for requesting removal and
include the fact that you are the poster/author of the message. Next
post a new message on the appropriate Message Board with the corrected
information you have learned and any new query you may wish to include.

To globally update/correct your e-mail address or name on messages
previously posted, log-in to your existing account and click on MY
PROFILE. Make any needed changes in your Name, E-mail, Post Name, and/or
Post E-mail. If you have multiple accounts you will need to update each
account you have used when posting messages on the Message Boards.

If you do not have an account and you did not login when posting to the
boards you will need to register as a new user using your name and e-
mail address as they are listed on the posts you wish to update. After
registering, login and click on MY PROFILE and update the information.

However, if you have included your e-mail address or name (which has now
changed) in the message body, you cannot update or change these items in
the above manner. You will need to post a reply to the original message
with the updated information. Alternatively, you may post a new,
corrected message and request that the original message be removed.

You cannot request removal or changes for messages that you did not
write (author) unless you discover spam, personal attacks, obscenity,
commercial posts, or other abuse of the Message Board system by someone
else, or if you find a message posted to an inappropriate board. Board
abuse should be reported when viewing the abusive or misplaced message
by clicking REPORT ABUSE so that the board administrator or Message
Board Staff may review your objection to the message.

You may also contact the board administrator, if there is one, by
private e-mail if you have any concerns about a posted message. Click on
the LINKS & ANNOUNCEMENTS link on the main board page for each
administered board to access the contact information. If a board is
unadministered use the REPORT ABUSE link, select the OTHER radio button
and put any remarks in the comments box.

Over the River and Through the Woods
  By Lloyd R. Gambill-Collins   http://lw2fd.hotmail.msn.com/cgi-bin/compose?curmbox=F000000001&a=0e4882548f2b91875c642bc71bb497ad&mailto=1&to=lrcollins1@juno.com&msg=MSG1027041032.76&start=2660697&len=33083&src=&type=x

A couple of years back I finally made contact with my GAMBILL family in
Bedford County, Tennessee through RootsWeb. We had lost track of the
GAMBILLS some years after the death in 1905 of my grandfather, Henry
Cooper GAMBILL -- long before I came on the scene. I always wondered
about them and made half-hearted attempts at finding them, with no
success. But, through RootsWeb, I finally found a second cousin, Julia
LEDYARD, living in Nashville, Tennessee. She had all the information on
the GAMBILLS, and even told me where many of the old -timers were
buried.

I wanted to pay homage to my great-grandfather's burial site, so with
Julia's direction's, on the return trip from Florida, this spring, I
veered off I-24 to make my way over a narrow, rolling blacktop road, to
Shelbyville, Tennessee. Armed with new directions from a local
fellow, and following a friendly fellow in a pickup truck, I was
soon headed out Tennessee State 64, looking for New Bethel Cemetery.

About five miles out, suddenly a sign loomed large on the road side:
"New Bethel Baptist Church." I hit the brakes and slewed off into the
church driveway. A burying ground behind the little white church was
identified by the ancient tombstones standing firmly entrenched in a
grassy eternity. Sunday morning services were in progress, so I crept
around to park behind the building.

Immediately, I was amongst the tombstones, and GAMBILL, my kinfolk,
greeted me from all around! I began to examine the tombstone
inscriptions and found some familiar names, when I suddenly came to a
double stone, where I made out GAMBILL in large letters. Squinting at
the mildewed, discolored, and weathered stone, I made out SARAH and then
the letter C -- well, howdy! It's great-grandma Sarah Clementine . . .
gotta be! I hurried to my car and grabbed a large wet towel, back to the
tombstone and scrubbed vigorously, feverishly, huffing and puffing, and
then the letters all began to come out. On the left side of the stone
was the inscription B. GAMBILL -- that's great-grandpa Bradley A.
GAMBILL who died 1909. Yep, that's the correct date.

So after all these years we had a meeting of sorts. My mother told us
lots of stories about visiting grandma and grandpa on their farm in
Tennessee when she was growing up, and I had always wanted to meet them,
and here we were at last. It was a meeting of great satisfaction for me
-- like crossing the finish line, after the race is over. But, they
finished their course, and I will finish mine, and when we meet on that
great and wonderful day, I will know them, for we met one day by a
little white church in the grassy hills of Tennessee.

Accidental Discoveries
  By Pat Sheldon  http://lw2fd.hotmail.msn.com/cgi-bin/compose?curmbox=F000000001&a=0e4882548f2b91875c642bc71bb497ad&mailto=1&to=rpshel@frontiernet.net&msg=MSG1027041032.76&start=2660697&len=33083&src=&type=x

My ancestors immigrated to America between 1630 and 1840 and I have had
to search across the United States and made contact with many "cousins"
with whom I have exchanged information. As a result I have found more
than 300 ancestors and their siblings, and only a handful of elusive
ancestors still remain. Thanks to RootsWeb and the Internet I have been
able to track further and faster in the last three years than I ever
would have otherwise.

On one such search I had given up on ever finding my mother's great-
grandfather, Galen WILMARTH, in Pennsylvania but found a message on the
WILMARTH Message Board about a man with the same name living in Michigan
with matching data and he appeared to have a second family. But, I also
had a Christmas card that my 2g-grandmother had received from "Aunt
Julia" with a Michigan postmark.

I proceeded to the Michigan GenWeb and its search engine took me to a
cemetery website in Allegan County.  As I began scanning the names on
the site, instead of Aunt Julia on my mother's side I was surprised to
find listed the second wife of my father's great-grandfather. Sarah had
moved to Iowa and back to Michigan after my 2g-grandfather's death in
the early 1900s. She was buried by her first husband. I had never been
able to find Sarah's last name and my only clue was a small item in the
local news of an Iowa newspaper stating that she had visited her
daughter one summer in Kalamazoo.

The author of the Michigan site had noted that the cemetery records
stated Sarah's last name was SHEELY at her death. Sarah Power SHEELY's
birth year was the same and further investigation with the Kalamazoo
Genealogical Society and the census records brought out the rest of the
story.

This is only one of several accidental discoveries I have experienced,
thanks to search engines and the terrific volunteers at Roots Web and
USGenWeb. I make it a practice to contribute data every year in hopes
it will help someone else.

of Nathaniel Paine BLAKER, M.R.C.S": 1835-1920, a farmer's son in
Sussex, England, who grew up to be a surgeon. Chapters on sport,
schooling, medical training at that time, social life and clothing. His
comparisons of his youth with his present day are rather idiosyncratic.

7. FROM ROOTSWEB REVIEW'S BOTTOMLESS MAILBAG
--------------------------------------------
[Editor's Note: "Making Brick Walls," by Delores Rochelle Walls in
RootsWeb Review 3 July opened the floodgates on name-searching
adventures. Think you have problems finding your ancestors? Read on:]

Finding the Best Proof
As I am sure you have received many comments regarding the submission of
the "Making of Brick Walls," I am fairly certain I can top any search
nightmares. My fiancé and I are preparing for our wedding next June and
are working on our respective family trees. We both have tremendous
search engine returns -- my surname is BEST (as in best guess, best
regards, all the best, etc.). His surname is PROOF (as in I have no
proof, looking for proof, fire proof, water proof, etc). Need I say
more?
-- Bunny Best (soon to be Proof)   http://lw2fd.hotmail.msn.com/cgi-bin/compose?curmbox=F000000001&a=0e4882548f2b91875c642bc71bb497ad&mailto=1&to=bunny.best@comcast.net&msg=MSG1027041032.76&start=2660697&len=33083&src=&type=x

Hook, Lines, and Sinker
While I understand the difficulty people named SPIES, MAY, or LOVE have
in searching for their surnames, let us not forget the unfortunate LINES
family. When I ask search engines for that surname, I get every name in
existence, with somewhere in the page a remark about "the family lines"
or "the family split into several lines," not to mention references to
county lines and state lines!
  --Jane Leavell   http://lw2fd.hotmail.msn.com/cgi-bin/compose?curmbox=F000000001&a=0e4882548f2b91875c642bc71bb497ad&mailto=1&to=littlecalamity@hotmail.com&msg=MSG1027041032.76&start=2660697&len=33083&src=&type=x

A Clannish Bunch
Odd surnames can create problems as we read in a previous issue. My
ancestors' surname was CLAN -- try looking that up on the Web. By the
way, are there any CLANs out there? Let me know where your family
came from in the UK.
  --Nic Maennling   http://lw2fd.hotmail.msn.com/cgi-bin/compose?curmbox=F000000001&a=0e4882548f2b91875c642bc71bb497ad&mailto=1&to=maennling@sympatico.ca&msg=MSG1027041032.76&start=2660697&len=33083&src=&type=x

Putting Married Couples in their Place
Like others having problems similar to the "Making Brick Walls" writer,
I'm continually frustrated when researching my mother's ancestors -- her
maiden name was MARR. Virtually every database of information available
on the Internet or on CDs contains statements that "John married Mary,"
or "Fred marr. Elizabeth." Thankfully some people abbreviate such events
as "Charlie m. Millie." So come on everyone, save keystrokes by using
"b.", "m.", and "d." for "born," "married," and "died." Thank you.

Unfortunately, I don't know what to do about my great-great-
grandmother's people -- her family name was PLACE (as in "birthplace,"
"place of death," etc.).
--Allan J. Tompkins  http://lw2fd.hotmail.msn.com/cgi-bin/compose?curmbox=F000000001&a=0e4882548f2b91875c642bc71bb497ad&mailto=1&to=tompkins@ozemail.com.au&msg=MSG1027041032.76&start=2660697&len=33083&src=&type=x

Checking the Menu
My brick wall problem is not due to a surname but a ship name. My gg-
grandparents emigrated from Germany in 1893 aboard the "Essen."
Unfortunately, essen is German for "to eat." All of my search engine
hits have led to delightful sites about food and menus but not the ship.
  --Anita Hoyer   http://lw2fd.hotmail.msn.com/cgi-bin/compose?curmbox=F000000001&a=0e4882548f2b91875c642bc71bb497ad&mailto=1&to=buckeyegal@insight.rr.com&msg=MSG1027041032.76&start=2660697&len=33083&src=&type=x

X-Rated Files
The comments about ancestors who were "Brick Walls" or "Spies" put me in
mind of my "Net Nanny." I was offered a trial version of a content
watcher. I tried it once, then removed it as it was too sensitive: It
flagged my genealogy files as being potentially pornographic. (It found
big and Dick in close proximity). Nice try, Net Nanny!
  --Terri Doyle  http://lw2fd.hotmail.msn.com/cgi-bin/compose?curmbox=F000000001&a=0e4882548f2b91875c642bc71bb497ad&mailto=1&to=metric_squid@hotmail.com&msg=MSG1027041032.76&start=2660697&len=33083&src=&type=x
