WEEKLY PICKS
JORDAN: 13-1
Well, that was a nice week for yours truly...came out of nowhere, too. If it weren't for the Miami Dolphins not being able to shit on offense in that postponed game, I would have done something that few have done in their lifetimes--a perfect week. Nonetheless, I'll take it. Joining me this week and for the rest of the season is my friend, who is unfortunately a Rams fan, Chris. I will list his picks below mine. They will be posted later today when I have a chance.
WEEK 4
Cincinnati @ Pittsburgh
-The Steelers are at home to face a slumping Bengals team brought back down to earth by the class of the division, the Ravens. Well, maybe "class" isn't such a good word, but you get my point. But I just can't bet on a rookie QB...even if the Bengals' QB is only in his second year. Chad Johnson and Rudi Johnson should have enough to beat an underachieving defensive unit, even on the road. If the Steelers had a healthy Tommy Maddux, this would be a no brainer the other way...but because they don't, this game chokes me up.
Pick: Cincinnati
Indiannapolis @ Jacksonville
-The Jags' defense is amazing, but they can't keep getting by with the offense they've been putting up so far. The Colts are in a rythm right now, and Tom Moore's offense always attacks the perimeter, negating John Henderson and Marcus Stroud. Outdoors and against a tough defense...FUCK. I hate these first two games, they're fucking impossible. My head tells me the Colts have too much fire power on offense, and yet I look at where the game is being played and against WHAT kind of defense...the best defense in the NFL arguably...and...it's a tossup, basically. I'm gonna go with Jacksonville here--they can certainly contain the Colts' offense, and the Colts' defense is horrendous, so they should be able to put some points on the board. If they use Fred Taylor, they'll run all over them, and they're at home and their fans will be excited about their first 4-0 start in years.
Pick: Jacksonville
New England @ Buffalo
-The Patriots aren't going to blow their chance at the record. No way. The Bills are still trying to find an identity right now, and it won't be against Bill Bellichick's squad. Drew Bledsoe won't be the man to do it...that offense impresses no one yet, although it has the potential to.
Pick: New England
NY Giants @ Green Bay
-Well, the Giants are so far looking like one of the surprise teams...and the Packers might be disheartened at their 1-2 start. I hate to say it, but with those weapons around him and in Tom Coughlin's offense, Warner is gonna end up with solid numbers. The Packers are no longer unbeatable at Lambeau, and Ahman Green's running hasn't been enough to carry the rest of the team. I'm just feeling this one.
Pick: NY Giants
Oakland @ Houston
-This is Kerry Collins' team now, and they looked somewhat impressive. They're certainly a respectable playoff contender, but they face a Houston team that pulled off the big upset last week in Kansas City. They're home now, and if they letdown here, they will have a big uphill battle ahead to make a playoff run. Still, the Raiders bring a plethora of weapons in to attack a defense that has been improved but still not dominant, and their own defense has the PERSONNEL to be good. Still, I think Houston is going to be fired up about this one, but if they don't have Domanick Davis, their chances of doing much on offense are not good. Even if he plays, he IS listed as questionable...but the key is him playing. Another impossible game to predict, fuck. I'm gonna go 1-13 this week...probably.
Pick: Oakland
Philadelphia @ Chicago
-Oh man, if Lovie Smith wins 6 games with that team he deserves coach of the year. They have been hit harder than anyone with injuries, and while their defense should still be respectable with Lovie and Brain Urlacher...imagine what Terrell Owens will do to them. Oh boy...he might hit 90 career receiving touchdowns (he has 86) in this one.
Pick: Philadelphia
Washington @ Cleveland
-That was vintege (sp?) Mark Brunnell last night...won't happen again. The Browns' defense is too good...but their offense is a different story, hehe. I think we all know who is their quarterback, and the only fire he has is because he's flaming. Clinton Portis is the most overrated player in NFL history...all of those pulls and cut blocks aren't going to work against a stout, passionate Browns defense. At least I hope not...that little pussy just goes in behind blockers and dives forward for easy yardage. I hate him with a passion--highest paid RB in the NFL. What a fucking joke. I hope Quentin Griffin asks for the same thing at the end of the year, assuming he doesn't fumble his job away.
Pick: Washington
Atlanta @ Carolina
-The Falcons are off to a 3-0 start, but they face the defending NFC Champs in their house. John Fox is one of the game's best coaches, and he stays up late a night studdying game film of his opponents and truly gets a feel for their tendencies. He got burned by Vick last year, it won't happen again IN HIS HOUSE.
Pick: Carolina
New Orleans @ Arizona
-The Cardinals just can't get anything going on offense. They're due for that first win, for that breakout game...maybe next week if my 49ers get their heads down after that inevitable loss. If they lose to the Rams on Sunday Night, the Cardinals WILL beat the 49ers the following week...but anyway, I've got to say New Orleans has enough momentum to take down a Cardinals team that just flat-out has no offense. Even the Saints defense won't have to worry about that. The Cardinals have played close, and this is a VERY dangerous game...these games are so hard to pick, unlike last week's.
Pick: New Orleans
Denver @ Tampa Bay
-The Bucs are at home and have to play for pride...yet another dangerous game as the Broncos have looked unimpressive the last couple of weeks. But that defense...that Broncos defense...that should be enough, and the Charlie Garner-less Bucs are going to be one-dimensional for sure at this point. Quentin Griffin couldn't have picked a worse time to start fumbling as they face their second tough defense in 3 games (Jacksonville). Then again, the Bucs' weak front 7 and the Broncos' zone blocking stretch plays versus the Bucs' cover II, let linebackers run clean to the ball scheme will bang helmets...it will be interesting to see who wins out. My hope is Denver.
Pick: Broncos
NY Jets @ Miami
-Well, the Dolphins are officially dead. No offense of which to speak. I don't think Jay Fiedler too much of a difference on this team. They just can't run the ball and they can't give their QBs time to throw it, nor can their QBs throw it. But certainly they're better with Fiedler in there. Pennington is in a groove, and McCarreins looks like a bust signing so far.
Pick: NY Jets
Tennessee @ San Diego
-McNair will drive out from the hospital to play and win. If not, Billy Voleck is more than capable of winning games as a backup. They have Chris Brown, Derrick Mason, Drew Bennett, Ben Troupe, and Jeff Fisher never gets rattled. San Diego has an improved defense and a franchise back...but this is a must win game for Tennessee.
Pick: Tennessee
St. Louis @ San Francisco
-Ken Dorsey can't play any worse than he did last Sunday. St. Louis might be the worst team in the league not named Miami. They can move the ball through the air on offense, but that's about the extent of it. This game will all depend on the 49ers. Do they come out fired up and ready to play the way they're capable of, or do they come out with their heads burried in the sand? If it's the former, they will kick the Rams' asses by a wide margin all over Monster Stadium (that name will look a lot better if they kick the Rams' ass in it in its debut as the name). If it's the latter, they will continue to beat themselves and probably lose by around 10. I'm betting on the former, though. Dennis Erickson doesn't give up...he gets screwed and blows games he should win, but he won't let this get out of hand. Now if Rattay forces himself back and just isn't healthy, that's a whole different story entirely, and the 49ers are screwed.
Pick: San Francisco
Kansas City @ Baltimore
-Welcome to 0-4. It's a combination of a tough schedule and their offense deciding to go on vacation. They have injury problems at receiver and just no confidence this year. Their defense is NOT to blame--they are already better than they were last year, and showed marked improvement last week, granted it was at home against Houston. But the defense isn't the problem right now, it's the side of the ball they were supposed to be the best in the NFL on. They look a little like the Rams from two years ago that went 7-9.
